His expedition was financed by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. They literally kept him afloat. The Church of God, which is frequently pictured as the Bark or Boat of Saint Peter, also requires financing to keep it afloat. By our generosity in the Sunday collection we help to provide our parish, our local Church, with the financing it needs as it sails forward over the waters of time to the New World of God s Kingdom! WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Next Weekend- 15/16 World Mission Sunday is celebrated everywhere this weekend. This most important observance helps us to know the missionary nature of the Catholic Church. Without the support of parishes such as ours, the Church could not function in some of 1200 mission dioceses in the mission world. Please be as generous as your means allow in next week s special collection. Checks should be made payable to the parish, with a notation for Mission Sunday. We will send the entire amount to the Propagation of the Faith. Your generosity will help make a difference for good among the needy. 3 28 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 9, SPECIAL SERIES ON THE MASS This is the third of a series of articles designed to help us grow in our appreciation of the Mass, and to help us prepare for coming changes in the liturgy. Previous articles may be found on our parish website (sjcnj.org) under bulletins. PART THREE: GOD SPEAKS HIS WORD Sunday, September 18, we began a series of homilies on the Mass. We are preaching these homilies so that we can better pray and understand the Mass, and so that we will be prepared for the new English translation of the prayers of the Mass that parishes across the United States will begin using November 27, the First Sunday of Advent. If you were God, and you wanted to speak to the people of this world, what would you do? - Would you boom your voice through the heavens, so that everyone was sure to hear it? - Would you spell out your message using the stars of heaven to form letters and words? - Would you, perhaps, have everyone in the world dream the same dream, and wake up remembering that special dream that contained your message? If you were God what would you do? I doubt that any one of us would choose to do what God actually does. God has chosen to speak his message through the scriptures. At Mass, when the scripture readings are proclaimed by readers, imperfect human beings just like us, God Himself speaks to his people and Christ, present in his own word, proclaims the Gospel. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal #29) The message of God is proclaimed in a very ordinary way. In a way so ordinary that it can easily be missed. How often during the readings at Sunday Mass do we let our attention drift somewhere else? The next time the First Reading at Mass concludes and the reader says, The word of the Lord, ask yourself, What did I just hear? What was that word of the Lord? If we can t answer that question, we still have another opportunity to hear God s voice. For God speaks again in the Second Reading, and then again in the Gospel. If we are to hear the message of God, we need to be present and we need to listen to those readings as they are proclaimed. We need to listen with the realization that what we are hearing is not old news about people who lived long ago in a society very different from our own. Granted, the Scriptures were written centuries ago, yet they are always new, always news. They are about us, and about what God is doing in our world today. They are good news. As we consider how God has acted in the past, we can see how God is acting in the present. Besides listening to the word of God at Mass, we also are proclaimers of that very word. As we sing the Responsorial Psalm, usually taken from the Psalms of the Old Testament, we sing God s inspired word from the scriptures. God s word finds a place on our lips. Of the three readings at Mass, the Gospel is the most important. For in it, the Risen Lord speaks to His people. We highlight the importance of this reading by singing an acclamation, usually the Alleluia, as the Book of the Gospels is solemnly carried to the pulpit. In the homily that follows the Gospel, the preacher shares his reflection and understanding of the word of God. Through the lens of scripture, the preacher highlights what God is doing in our lives as Christians and in the world. After the homily, we affirm what God has told us in the readings as we say the Creed or Profession of Faith. God has spoken his message to us and each of us says I believe. That will actually be the new wording of the Creed starting November 27.We will begin saying I believe rather than We believe to highlight our personal profession of faith. Then moved by the word of God and conscious of our Christian responsibility to help others, we pray for those in need in the Prayer of the Faithful or Universal Prayer. A reader announces situations and people in need, and we hold them before God in prayer. In offering these petitions we are reminded that we are called to respond to the situations we have lifted up in prayer. For we are often the very instruments God wishes to use to answer those petitions. With the Prayer of the Faithful, the Liturgy of the Word comes to a close. If we were told that Almighty God, the One who spoke to Moses in a burning bush, and who spoke most perfectly in Jesus Christ, were going to speak Sunday at 3 pm at the Oradell and the New Milford Borough Hall, we would certainly be there. Yet God does speak. God speaks each Sunday in a very powerful way in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass. Let us listen attentively to that word at Mass. If we do not, we may miss the message that we need to hear, and that God wants to speak to us! Rev. Thomas B. Iwanowski 3

JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Sacrament Program Reminders New Hope for Children ANNUAL LOVE & CARING BREAKFAST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 Confirmation Parent/Candidate Meeting Monday, 17, at 7:30 pm in the Lower School Gym. Registration forms for the Confirmation Program are due now. New Hope for Children, a non-profit organization serving children in need, is happy to announce that Sunday, 23 is the date for the annual all you can eat breakfast which sends a message of love and caring to the orphans of Ukraine. Many immediate needs of the children are met through your participation in this annual event. This year, for the first time, the Breakfast is being held in the lower school gym. Food will be served from until 1:30 pm when the Tricky Tray winners and winners of the raffle will be announced. TARGET YOUTH GROUP NEWS We had a great time during Game Night last Sunday night, we were able to meet some new people and laugh a lot. Tonight, we will have our first Discussion Night from 7-9pm in the TARGET Room in the Rectory Basement. It will be a night to share your thoughts, opinions, and to learn about how others feel about different aspects of our faith. Invite a friend and come join us. Admission for the full buffet breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and our famous Social Concerns Crumb cakes for dessert, is still only $6 for adults and just $3 for children under 7. Hang Out Night Thursdays 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room in the basement of the Rectory. WE ARE SEEKING JUNIOR ALTAR SERVERS Raffle returns can be left at the rectory vestibule in the box marked for raffle returns. We look forward to this wonderful shared time of great food, fun, and friendship, while reaching out to children who truly need our help. We are looking for boys or girls in grades 5 to 8, who might be willing to assist at Mass as altar servers. This is great way for young people to grow in their relationship with God and to be of service to our parish. If you are a parent with a boy or girl in grade 5 to 8, who might be interested in serving Mass, please contact Father Raúl (FatherRaul@sjcnj.org) or ( ext 14). There will be three required training sessions to prepare new servers for their role at Mass. These sessions will take place on Thursday, 13, 17 and 20 at 3:30 pm in the Lower Church. BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS The St. Joseph Athletic Association is pleased to announce the CYO basketball tryout dates for -12. season. The tryouts are open to ALL boys and girls whose families are registered members of our parish, grades 5-8. The Archdiocese has a program entitled Protecting God s Children to ensure that the children and young people are in a safe environment. All adults, 18 and over, who work with youth in our parish must complete this training workshop and have a background check within one month of their starting date. This includes catechists and office assistants in the Religious Education Program, those involved in scouting, coaches and assistant coaches for basketball, track, and cheering, and anyone who will be assisting at school activities or class trips. There are Protecting God s Children Workshops at different times in parishes throughout the area. COACHES NEEDED We have a need for additional coaches and assistants to work with the Saint Joseph Athletic Association. GOOD NEWS FOR LITTLE ONES Good News for Little Ones, a program for children 6 months through 4 years of age, provides a safe and comfortable environment for children while their parents attend our 9 am or 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Good News is located in the greenhouse classroom in the Saint Joseph Lower School on Elm Street. 4

In advance of 22, we welcome donations of new or gently used pajamas, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, winter jackets and coats, leggings, pants, shoes, socks, boots, and shirts, in all sizes from babies and toddlers to teens. The clothing will be sorted and packaged for distribution to the orphanages of the Ukraine, and to the children of Resurrection School, our sister parish in Jersey City. This baptism program is presented by members of our parish who have participated in a series of training sessions conducted by Sister Donna Ciangio and Sister Sandy DeMasi. This program, developed by Sister Sandy, a nationally recognized expert in the faith formation of children, is being introduced in parishes throughout the area. The program consists of a series of gatherings with parents who are seeking baptism for their children.
