IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CELEBRATED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 9 Though not a holy day of obligation this year because the actual feast day falls on Sunday, December 8, the faithful are still encouraged to honor Mary, the patron saint of the United States under the title Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception by attending Mass on Monday at or. 3 One of the most beautiful and accessible of Advent customs is the Jesse tree, in which a small tree or a representation of one (often in the form of a banner) is decorated with symbols that portray the ancestry and spiritual heritage of Jesus. Important events of salvation history from the Old Testament and the Gospels are represented by symbols that colorfully describe them. Special note is taken of Jesus s descent in the line of King David, whose father is Jesse (1 Samuel 16, 1-13; Mt. 1, ). This is why the prophet Isaiah says that There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. (Is 11, 1). The earliest known use of the Jesse Tree motif is probably an 11th century manuscript that now resides in Prague University. Two of the world s most majestic cathedrals, Chartres in France and Wells in England, have stained glass windows on this theme. (Close up of Chartres window shown opposite.) Although there is no tightly defined roster of Jesse Tree symbols, a representative list would include: an apple, to represent the fall of mankind in the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). A rainbow or an ark, to recall how God spared Noah and his family from the great flood (Genesis, 6, 5-9, 17). a knife and kindling wood, to remember how Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac, if that was what God commanded (Genesis 22, 1-18). Sometimes, alternatively, Abraham is represented by a tent, in memory of his many migrations (Genesis 12 and elsewhere). a ladder, calling to mind Jacob s famous dream vision of God and his angels (Genesis 28, 10-22). a coat of many colors, evoking the account of Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 37; Genesis 38-50). a burning bush, to tell how God appeared to Moses in the desert to give him the mission of freeing the enslaved people of Israel (Exodus 3), or the tablets of the law God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19, 20-21, 1-17, 24, 12-18). (continued above) SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DECEMBER 8, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK a harp, the instrument so closely identified with 3 King David, who is traditionally credited with the composition of a large number of the Psalms (see Nehemiah 12, and the numerous attributions within the Book of Psalms). Sometimes David is represented by the six-sided star of David. a lily, standing for the sinless Mary. carpenter s tools or a donkey, associated with Saint Joseph. a shell, which would have been very useful to John the Baptist for carrying out his baptisms. a fish (Jn 21, 1-14) or the Chi-Rho symbol, to designate Jesus Christ. Creating a Jesse Tree is a fine way to share the riches of the biblical tradition with your family. Msgr. David C. Hubba SHARING CHRISTMAS JOY The Giving Tree has been placed in the main entrance of the Church, with a second tree at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday, December 15. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT AS YOU DECORATE YOUR TREE In the center of Eden was the tree of life (Genesis 2:9). From the root and stump of Jesse, new life blooms (Isaiah 11:1). When God comes to save us, the trees of the forest will sing for joy (Psalm 96:12). Jesus, whose very name means God saves, brought life eternal by dying on the tree (Acts 10:39). And in the middle of the new Jerusalem, straddling the river of life, is the tree of life restored to us with 12 kinds of fruit (Revelation 22:2)....from Welcome, Yule!, Liturgy Training Publications

Luke 18:16 LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN The Liturgy of the Word With Children is celebrated at the Mass every Sunday. Designed especially for our youngest parishioners, the Gospel is presented in a way they can understand. Children who would like to participate move to Mary s Chapel during the Liturgy of the Word (parents may accompany their child if they wish) and then return to the Upper Church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. MEMORIAL DONATIONS ACCEPTED A generous donation has already been made to pay for the electric votive candle stands we plan to install in front of the statue of Our Lady in the Harrison Street vestibule of the church. We are still accepting donations for candle stands in front of the statue of Saint Joseph and in front of the Blessed Mother in Mary s Chapel. Made of wood to match the pews, they are each estimated to cost $6,000. If anyone would like to donate that amount in memory of or in the name of a loved one, a plaque to that effect would be attached. THIRD SATURDAY OF PRAYER DECEMBER 14 All are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the 8:30 am Mass on Saturday, December 14 in Mary s Chapel for the Rosary. NEW WORSHIP AIDS FOR A NEW LITURGICAL YEAR Please note that our new missals/hymnals are designed so that only the back cover is tucked into the plastic cover flap. Mary s Chapel Celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL Monsignor Bill Hatcher, who has been saying Sunday Masses for us since July, is now residing at the Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, a hospice affiliated with Holy Name Medical Center. He has been battling cancer for some time now, and has recently grown weaker. He asks for your prayers and promises his own prayers for you. If you would like more information, contact Laura Villena at It was the start of Cornerstone XVII, Friday night, March 7, I wasn't exactly going in "kicking and screaming," but I was very uneasy about the unknown hours ahead. CIRCLE JANUARY 12 ON YOUR CALENDAR for An Afternoon of Christmas Joy, the annual Christmas concert of our Saint Joseph Music Ministry. However, it turned out to be something I could have never expected or imagined. The love, the spirit, the faith, the food...it was an incredibly special 26 hours. Cornerstone has renewed my faith in people and helped to changed my outlook on the world. POPE FRANCIS IS ASKING FOR YOUR HELP In response to the Holy Father s recent call on the laity to help bishops from around the world prepare for an Extraordinary Synod on the Family in October 2014, the Archdiocese has prepared an online survey asking for your opinions and thoughts on a range of topics dealing with the challenges to the family in the contact of evangelization. I've laughed, cried and learned so much from the community of women of Cornerstone -- while growing in my faith and love for God. Although the Cornerstone weekend is hard to describe, this line in the song "Beggars at the Feast" from Les Miserables comes to mind: "To love another person is to see the face of God." Cornerstone has been so wonderful. I would love for you to experience it for yourself.. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Matthew 3:1-12. Today is the Second Sunday of Advent and we light the second purple candle of the Advent Wreath. The Second Candle is known as the Candle of Preparation. Preparation means to Get Ready. In today s Gospel, we are told that God sent John the Baptist to help his people prepare their hearts and minds for the coming of the Savior, who is also known as the Light. John the Baptist stood out as someone different and special. He would shout from the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord. People came from all over to hear him and learn about the coming of the Lord Jesus. They were baptized in order to free themselves from sin. God wants us to be like those people and ask God to forgive our sins. So get ready! John the Baptist told everyone to prepare the way of the Lord. MISSION OF THE WEEK Some of the ways that we can prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus are to: 1. Ask God for forgiveness for your sins. 2. Go to Sunday Mass and watch as the priest lights the Advent Wreath and attend the Liturgy of the Word with Children. 3. Ask those you may have hurt in some way to forgive you. 4. Forgive those people who have hurt you. 6
