This plan covers every aspect of parish. Forward in Faith 2016 deals with the following: Our Parish Mission Statement As a family of faith, Saint Joseph Parish welcomes everyone to encounter Jesus Christ through Word, Worship, Community, and Service. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are changed for the better and sent forth as disciples of Christ to continue his work in the world. A DAY OF RECOLLECTION JUST FOR WOMEN SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2012 Join us for a day of prayer and reflection at the start of this New Year. We will spend time looking at the year past its struggles and gifts. We will be quiet enough to be aware of ourselves in the present moment. We will pray for the grace to be open to the new life God wants to give us in 2012! There will be time for quiet reflection and solitude. And, we will do what we do best as women share. This New Year s Day is a perfect day to thank the Lord for the gift of 2012 that begins today. designated A National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education in 2011 The gift of a new year gives us the opportunity to begin anew. Just as we discard the 2011 calendar, we can discard the past. We certainly can hold onto the good things that happened, the times of joy, and the memories of people and events that warm our heart. But we can discard the mistakes, the sorrows, the pain, and the sins and move forward. Rather than holding on to them we can discard them like last year s calendar. In fact, when you think about it we as Catholics have a sacrament that is all about discarding the sins and failings of the past. The Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation is all about starting over and moving forward with the grace and help of God. FORWARD IN FAITH 2016 This new year, will see our parish moving forward as we roll out FORWARD IN FAITH 2016, the strategic plan that will guide our parish in the years ahead. Under the guidance of Meitler Consultants, many people have worked on the plan. It includes input from literally many hundreds of parish members since it incorporates the results of the In-Pew Survey taken in March and many meetings held during the months that followed. 4 SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL INVITES YOU TO ITS 7 TH ANNUAL TRICKY TRAY A BLUE RIBBON EVENT Saint Joseph School 7th Annual Tricky Tray will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Rockleigh Country Club. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. This anticipated event offers the opportunity to win hundreds of wonderful prizes! There will be a preview of the prize baskets the day of the event from 12 pm to 2 pm The reservation price of $60 per ticket includes 4 course dinner, beer, wine, soda and a 25 ticket sheet for the prize drawings. In celebration of our prestigious Blue Ribbon status, our theme will be St. Joseph School, Blue Ribbon Excellence. We are seeking donations from various businesses, both corporate and local. 5 JANUARY 1, 2012 SOLEMNITY OF THE FEAST OF MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD Report The 2011 Giving Tree Project St. Joseph Parish Working Together To Share The Spirit of Christmas Thanks to your individual efforts, our annual parish Giving Tree project was a wonderful expression of Christ s love during this Christmas Season. As a parish family, we worked together to bring the joyous spirit of Christmas to the residents of both the Covenant House with a donation of 88 gifts and Bergen Regional Medical Center with a donation of 30 gifts. Through our joint efforts with Catholic Charities and Our Lady of Fatima Parish of North Bergen we were able to touch the lives of 20 individual families in the Hudson County area. That is 74 individual children and their parents who experienced the joy and magic of Christmas through your generosity. Anne Annunziato and Kristin Racine are all smiles at the response of the people of Saint Joseph Parish to those in need. In total, 243 clothing items were given, with an additional 65 gift cards amounting to approximately $1,365. Happiness was brought to many of the children by the 170 toys and books that were delivered to their homes. Yes, gifts on Christmas morning are wonderful, but in reality, these families need help to take care of their basic everyday needs. Your outpouring of concern for others and the Christ-like generosity of this parish was demonstrated by the $1,300 worth of grocery store gift certificates that were donated and distributed between the 5 Catholic Charities Families and helped the efforts of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, who reached out to a total of over 70 families in the Hudson County area. We are living in a time of great hardship. The people of St. Joseph Parish have truly shown what it means to live the teachings of Jesus and have expressed the true meaning of Christmas. Barbara Mezzina and Carol Winkler sort gifts from the Giving Tree. GOOD NEWS FOR LITTLE ONES MOMS, POPS & TOTS The Good News for Little Ones program resumes next Sunday, January 8. The Good News for Little Ones program, for children 6 months through 4 years of age, provides a safe and comfortable environment for children while their parents attend our 9 am or 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Good News for Little Ones is located in the greenhouse classroom located in the Saint Joseph Lower School on Elm Street. Moms, Pops and Tots program resumes this week on Thursday, January 5 at 9:30 am in the Rectory Basement meeting room. New members are always welcome. Moms, Pops and Tots is a support and play group for parents and caregivers of preschool-age children. For further information contact Pat MacRae ( ). 5

6 The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Luke Chapter 2 verses When we learn about something wonderful, we want to find out all about it. Then we go and share the good news with other people. In today s Gospel, St. Luke tells us what the shepherds did when they found out about the birth of the baby named Jesus, the Son of God. When they listened to the angel who told them about Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus, they went to see the newborn baby born in a stable. Then they told everybody the wonderful things they had heard and seen. Like those shepherds, we need to tell other people about Jesus. He was the one who came to us so that we might know of God s love for us! NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9 am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. If you are interested in helping in this committee, you can contact us at (kids@sjcnj.org).
