2 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord. 3 Pastor s Column Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As we continue our Lent, we meditate on the human condition as we find it in ourselves; as we find it in others. The beautiful practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are all oriented toward a greater identification with Christ s suffering and death for us, and His Resurrection through which He overcomes all our weakness and sin. These same practices draw us out of ourselves and toward the needs of others. Perhaps you will appreciate the poem below called Cross of Worries, by a German poet named Markus W. Bruners, which I came across many years ago in the Holy Land: Cross of Worries The parched leaves Of your worries Hung on the wood of the Cross Your helplessness Hard for you to bear Suspended on its wood Your anguish Buried In the Cross of Death Now Your hands are free To carry The others' burden God bless you all! PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD Today s Gospel contains the best known and most often quoted passage in the New Testament. Who has not seen John 3:16 at a televised sporting event? Who has not heard and read the familiar and comforting words? For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Like an old song or a soft blanket, the words comfort us. THE REST OF THE STORY But the rest of the Gospel verses are not so familiar or so comforting: Whoever does not believe has already been condemned (John 3:18). Do my doubts condemn me? Just how strong is my faith? People preferred darkness to light because their works were evil (John 3:19). Can I justify my lifestyle when the world s children are starving? For everyone who does wicked things hates the light (John 3:20). What have I done that I don t want others to know about? Why do I look the other way when people or governments act unethically or immorally? The image of Moses holding up the bronze serpent is a stark reminder of the purpose of the Crucifixion. The Son of Man will be lifted up but first he will suffer a painful death on the cross. We are saved through his suffering love if we will let him love us. Whoever lives the truth comes to the light (John 3:21). To live the truth is to accept ourselves as we are good, bad, and ugly. Love can only enter when our defenses are down. Jesus does not condemn; we condemn ourselves by our non belief in our own essential goodness. It s an internal condemnation removed only by his gift the gift of love. Jesus is love. We are saved by love. We save others through love. Love is the only thing worth living or dying for. Copyright 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. SECOND COLLECTION Today is the Peter s Pence Collection, a worldwide collection that supports the charitable works of Pope Francis. Funds from this collection help victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Take this opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please bring your colored eggs to the kitchen area of the OLMA Cafeteria on March 28th between 4 and 6PM. OLM TRACK OLM has had a long-running and very successful Track & Field program for our Grade 1-8 students. This program has helped to introduce and train student-athletes, not only, in various track and field events, but also, athletic competition, teamwork and sportsmanship. Each season the OLM T&F Team practices weekly and competes against other Bergen County Catholic Schools in a series of track meets. This program requires the active support and involvement of volunteer coaches and administrators. The continued existence of the T&F program is currently in jeopardy due to the limited number of coaches and administrators committed to participating and supporting the 2018 season. The OLM Team needs immediate help. If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact Tom Monahan at (201) or thomasrmonahan@gmail.com. I will be happy to provide more information as to how you can help and ensure the continuation of this special program. Thank You. CONGRATULATION WINNERS! STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son - John 3:16 Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts. That we nurture and develop them and return with increase. IS RCIA FOR YOU? There are many reasons why you may want to become involved in the RCIA. Do any of these fit you? I have never been baptized. I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don t know what the next step may be. I have been baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to become Catholic. I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments. Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encourage and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step! Upcoming sessions: March 18 at 10:30AM in the Parish Center. Call John Rokoszak at or Jlrok@optonline.net for more information.
