2 Ascension Thursday - journey from mourning into joy! This Thursday is the 40 th day after Easter Sunday Ascension Thursday. This is a significant day in the life of the Church. It is a holy day of obligation meaning a sort of Sunday that appears in the life and calendar of the Church. Holy days are all feasts and solemnities worth the joy of celebrating! We remain in the Easter season and we have heard in the scriptures the many stories of conversion and witness in the Acts of the Apostles in these last six Sundays. This week we read the Ascension account of Jesus Christ to heaven. All of us have or will grieve the physical separation of loved ones. Wakes and funerals are part of the human experience. For Catholics, who understand the gift and promise of Easter and of the bodily resurrection, the Ascension is a beacon of hope. Christ has gone where our loved ones and we ourselves will pilgrimage. We see the shock and sadness of Good Friday and Holy Saturday turn one soul and disciple at a time to joyful encounters with the Risen Jesus. Later (40 days later), Jesus gives the instruction about the Ascension since then and only then will He and the Father send the Holy Spirit to teach, console and guide us. In our lives and especially for those who are grieving, Ascension Thursday is a day of grace and comfort, inspiration and consolation! We too, like the disciples hear Jesus say, What are you waiting for? We need to be about proclaiming the Risen Jesus to others. Especially, the lonely, the forgotten and the poor after encountering Jesus in the Mass and Eucharist. The final blessing that says Go and glorify the Lord by your life!, is especially ours this Ascension Thursday. See you at the altar this week, as we celebrate this Feast of God s victory and commissioning! Join me in praying for our First Communion and Confirmation candidates who will be receiving special graces these last days of the Easter season. Fr. 6 Men s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 16 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall! Love One Another In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter, we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to "love one another as I love you" (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday's selection from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter shows us how far God's love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer "shows partiality" to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God's love extends to all people, and so should ours. Out Ahead of Us In the book of Acts, we learn that God is the primary active agent in the world. God is indeed active within the church. But here we learn that the Holy Spirit also is out ahead of us, working in the lives and communities of people who are different from us. God is busy within and among people who don't know God, or who understand God differently, or who struggle to understand God. Like Peter and the early church, many of us somehow learned, often in childhood, whom to trust and who should be avoided. God, however, seems to be fond of crossing boundaries. The Spirit is stirring in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and public spaces. Many of us will need to learn to pay attention to this. The Spirit invites us to find God there and to join in God's work. Our parishes are invited to embrace our local communities. As we listen and learn from our neighbors and share God's love with them, we will deepen our understanding of being the church
