MUSIC MINISTRY CHILDREN'S CHOIR Children grades 3 to 8 can join our children's choir * 2nd graders can sign up to begin singing after receiving first communion TEEN TREBLE CHOIR Teens are invited to sing whenever they are not: sleeping late, cramming for exams, playing sports or involved in a show. (Because these accommodations are well worth the talent and energy our youth bring :) Check out the new music ministry web page at Serving God and His People at Mass - Altar Server Training for Grades 3-8 Serving God isn't just for adults, we are all called to serve God and his people. One of the most important places to do that is during the Saturday evening/sunday liturgy. We are looking for boys and girls in Grade 3 and up to be Altar Servers. We will have a training session on Saturday, April 21 at 10am in the Church. During this training session, Deacon Ron will lead a train session that will walk the young people through all of the duties and responsibilities of being an altar server. Once they are trained, they will be able to serve at any of the Masses that they attend. 4 Catholic School Open House Saint Dominic Academy, Jersey City will host Open House on Wednesday, May 2 from 6-8pm. The event will feature club and athletic demos, academic presentations, tours, and complete details about the application process for Grades 7-12 as well as information about Summer Programs. Additionally, SDA announces Walk Through Wednesdays when parents (and students, if they are available) will be able to visit SDA every Wednesday that school is in session, between the hours of 10:00 11:30 a.m. No appointment is necessary. Save the Date Rosary Society Baby Shower On Monday, June 11 th, St. Mary s Rosary Society will hold their Annual Baby Shower to benefit Good Counsel Homes. We would like to invite all women of the parish to this inspirational evening. Several mothers from the Home, and their babies, will be in attendance. Many of our talented parishioners have generously donated some lovely handmade quilts and blankets to this event in years past. In addition, a bin will be placed in the back of the church in a few weeks for any donations you wish to give. (List of needed items to come!) MARY S FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM This Sunday and Tuesday are the final classes for our Religious Education school year for Grades K-8. For the past eight months, our students have been learning about our Catholic Faith and Traditions from our wonderful staff of volunteer catechists. Here is quick rundown of our program: 443 Students in Grades K Returning Families 75 New Families in Religious Education 88 First Communion Children 58 Confirmation Candidates 40 Volunteer Catechists 15 Youth Aides So what do all these numbers mean? I believe they mean, we have a great opportunity to share our faith with our young people so that they can receive the Good News of Christ in their lives. I believe that these numbers also mean that there is a true hunger for faith, a thirst for understanding, and a desire for living a life of meaning. I also believe that these numbers mean that we are truly blessed at St. Mary's. It is our sincere hope that we can be a welcoming and caring parish community where all people experience Christ's love, joy and peace. 656 Page 4

6 The idea of Jesus being our Advocate with the Father from last week s second reading continues to spark my reflection. Last week I summarized a fairly dense paragraph about the First letter of John with the following two comments: 1. In sacrificing his humanity on the cross, Jesus becomes our Advocate with God the Father. 2. We are called to charitable living as a response to this gift In today s gospel, Jesus uses the allegory of the Good Shepherd to describe himself. The answers to three questions provide the basis for today s article: 1. What are the qualifications of a Good Shepherd? 2. How do I measure up? 3. What can I do? The major qualification of the Good Shepherd is congruous to that of the Advocate. The Good Shepherd lays down His life. I simply don t measure up. If I were a pro golfer, I wouldn t even make the cut. It is important however, to remember that Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd, in contrast of the religious leaders of His time. This notwithstanding, it is freeing to acknowledge that my love can never be as perfect and complete as that of he who is GOOD Shepherd. So what can I do? That is the upcoming week s reflection. I m sure you won t be surprised that a song lies at the center of my initial thoughts. In With All The Saints (#418) Bob Hurd names many who call you and me to advocacy. Among these are the poor and forsaken, the refugees and victims of violence. Verse 6 is what brought this powerful prayer to mind: So may this flock, this church once more gathered, faithfully follow its Shepherds voice to be a living sign of the love of God and neighbor.
