If you recognize this article it is because it was my year-end report for the congregational meeting and explains why you have seen all the posters around the church showing snapshots of us doing the work of Christ and being the Fruits of the Spirit. Robert s Reflections It has been a year of change, to be sure. Staff changes, currently leaving two open positions, is one of the most prominent things. Change, since it rarely comes easily, often stirs up conflict. For those of us who dislike conflict the feeling is anything but peaceful. It brings an almost constant sense of dis-ease. It affects our attendance at meetings, makes it easier to miss times of worship and fills us with thoughts that are often less than positive. Worship our reason for being in church in the first place, is compromised. Telling ourselves that we shouldn t feel this way is not that helpful, for buried feelings usually come out in other destructive ways. While it is important to take a critical look at things, it is more important to guard against becoming critical people. A constant barrage of criticism soon gives way to a sense of ennui a weariness and dissatisfaction that comes from a loss of interest and excitement. The Christian community works best in a setting of mutual respect and uplifting. A sense of equality can reinforce our goals and gladden our journey. When I was young and first chose the Christian path I was filled with excitement and wonder. I wanted to be the best follower of Christ that I could be. I suspect you had a similar goal. We can lose that focus, though, and find ourselves bogged down in a minutia of details that, while important, do not serve the best interest of our faith. So, what do we do? We work at reconnecting and rediscovering our roots. That is important in any organization especially one that has been inexistence for 172 years. It is really not that difficult. In fact the faith is a lot simpler than we usually try to make it. The Fruit of the Spirit is a biblical term that sums up the nine visible attributes of a true Christian life. Paul illustrates with these attributes the kind of love that should mark our life together: Love But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians5:22-23 If we follow these simple and fruitful guidelines I am confident that we will reconnect with our right path, be reenergized and renewed toward productive faithful ministry. 3 P a g e 3 CHURCH HISTORIAN S NOTE: SMALL THINGS DID YOU KNOW? I thought this image was interesting. Do you know where it is in our church? Obviously it is wood. At various times it may resemble a face, or a heart, or just a knot. It can be seen every time you come into the church, but like so many aspects of our worship experience, we may take the image for granted, or ignore it entirely. We have pointed out before in this column the grand dimensions and space in our church the laminated piers, the huge south window, the array of organ pipes, for example. But there is beauty in small things as well in this image for example, or the light through the windows, perhaps a particular sound the organ makes at some point during the prelude or offertory, a turn of a phrase as the scripture is being read, a warm handshake, a meaningful sentence gleaned from the sermon, and dozens of other instances when we can appreciate the small wonders and delights of the world we enter when we come to Barry Church. Not always must we experience a grand event or overwhelming emotion to feel the good things. Church history is more than just facts and dates. It is about legacy, heritage and stewardship of the things we have built, as well as the things we have inherited. Even the small things. What are some of the small things you appreciate at Barry? If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no Volunteers Needed to help water when I am out of town. 5 Page 5 FELLOWSHIP DINNER/BOARD MEETING On Sunday, July 1, we will have a Barry birthday celebration after the 11am service. Sit at the table with your birthday month. We will have a potluck, so please bring a dish to pass. After dinner, the birthday cake will be served. Nick and Betty Rega will be the leaders for this event. They will need some help in setting up the food line and cleaning up after the meal is over. Please let them know if you can assist. Thank you in advance. The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace. Mother Teresa Pomegranate Because the pomegranate has an abundance of seeds, the fruit is used to represent hope and future life. It also symbolizes the many believers who are individual members of the universal Christian church. The year without a summer Don't complain if the sun shines during summer, which begins this month. According to Edward L. Friedman, of the National Reference Library, the summer of 1816 was so cloudy that crops could not ripen and fruit trees could not bear fruit. There was a complete failure of crops and fruit trees was known as the year without a summer.
