1 Barry Good News Barry Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1840 Church Office: Sunday Worship 8:30 - First Worship Service 9:30 am - Sundays School classes for children and adults 10:30 - Second Worship Service Staff May Gail Roller, Editor Honor God, Serve Others, Seek Christ; Together Senior Minister: Rev. Dr. Dennis Patience dennispatience@gmail.com Director of Music: Vigthor Zophoniasson - vigthor@gmail.com Family Life Director: Jim Frentrop - Jim.frentrop@gmail.com Administrative Secretary: Gail Roller - groller@barrychristianchurch.com Ponderings of Patience Memorializing this Memorial Day By the time you read this article, Memorial Day will be close at hand, rendering the question, What will we be doing this Memorial Day? A recent report from the Travel Club, AAA Travel Services indicates that this year 37.2 Million Americans will be traveling this Memorial Day Weekend. 33 Million will make their journey by car. This is the highest rate of travel since 2005, due to lower fuel prices. (source: Bucks County Courier Times, Levittown, PA May 18, 2015) Although Memorial Day is now a federal holiday in which many Americans engage in numerous recreational activities, it originally began after the Civil War to c o m m e m o r a t e U n i o n a n d Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 1900 s as it became known as Decoration Day, it was a day set aside to decorate the graves of American service members who have died while in military service in war or peacetime. And today, many commemorative events are held throughout the country to maintain this honored tradition. But whatever events may absorb the majority of our time this Memorial Day weekend, may all of us take a portion of the day to memorialize. Whether it be a public our private occasion, may we take a few moments to commemorate, recall and show respect for the many men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to protect and serve our country. Our freedoms of thought, speech, religious practice, assembly, travel and commerce are upheld and maintained by the one percent of our citizenship serving in the Armed Services that protect the rights and privileges we enjoy every day. And as we take a period of time to remember those who have lost their lives in service to our country this Memorial Day, may we also remember that the practice of memorializing is an ancient one. For on numerous occasions in the Bible, when there was a need to commemorate and remember an important occasion or an important commitment that the people of God upheld in their relationship to God, standing stones were set up as a monument of remembrance. An important example is described in the book of Joshua. When the Israelite people crossed over the Jordan River, they took twelve large, smoothed and rounded stones from the middle of the Jordan River and stacked them on top of one another at their camp on the other side of the river. In addition, Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan River. Both sets of stones were in place for generations, to remind the Israelites, of the greatness of God s power and so that generations to come would honor God forever (Joshua 4:24). Whether we memorialize the greatness of God through worship, praise and the reading of his word, or whether we remember people who gave of themselves for the betterment of our daily living, may we always remember that we are indebted to God and the people of generations before us, for the great blessings and benefits we enjoy each day. Memorializing is indeed a good task for us to practice on Memorial Day and any other day we can. Best wishes and continued prayers to everyone as we await the privilege to worship God this Sunday and to remember the sacrifice of others this Memorial Day. Pastor Dennis
