Tom Blakley -tdblakley@hotmail.com T hirty-seven years is quite a long time in anyone s life, and to think that the George s have been here at Barry Christian Church for nearly four decades is sometimes hard to fathom, but it s true. Also knowing that my ministry with you followed another lengthy ministry with Brother Mac makes it all the more difficult to consider the procedures for moving through this process in an effective way so that the transition from one ministerial style to another is as seamless as possible. Already I have heard some speak of a desire to move through this process quickly. While I know we would like that to happen, I think it is extremely important to move with caution. Inherent with long ministries is a particular style of ministry with which you are familiar. You know what to expect of me I know what to expect of you. When a change comes we sort of have to relearn personalities and quirks and establish new trust levels. I am confident that you will Barry Staff Honor God, Serve Others, Seek Christ; Together Robert s Reflections do this with ease and hospitality and will welcome your new minister with the same grace that I have grown to know and love. While long ministries can be beneficial in many ways a downside of a long ministry is that we have not had the experience of the relocation process. You may be nervous about it all, but be assured that you have elected a strong group of people who are committed to lead you through. Ruth Ann, our board chairperson has been in contact with the regional office of our church and is obtaining the help necessary to work through the steps of this process. When the proper time comes our regional church will be working with us to find the right person to be our new interim minister. That person will help assess the strengths of our congregation and be a bridge to lead us from one ministerial style to the next. In the next few months I intend to visit this subject more fully. While you have not had to go through this for many years, I assure you I have never retired before either. 3 P a g e 3 CHURCH HISTORIAN S NOTE: BARRY CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN Although we can celebrate a long and continuous history at Barry Christian, we are actually not the oldest church established in this community. That honor goes to Barry Cumberland Presbyterian Church, founded in 1826, and active for about 100 years. On an old map in our possession is plotted the location of that church, as well as several owners of land around its property. Today there is almost nothing to remind us of that church, but there are some intriguing links. The Barry Cumberland Presbyterian Church was located just north of present Barry Road, along the street that angles to the northwest, and now known as Old Stagecoach Road. Pieces of the foundation of this old church can still be seen, as well as several surviving cedar trees. When the church was razed about 1925, a house was built on the partial foundations and remained in use for some years afterwards. A copy of the map referred to can be seen in our library. We can not be sure of the date, but survey references are all in antique designations, such as poles and links, so we know it is old. Cumberland Presbyterian churches branched off of the older church as a result of the same religious revival that brought about the Disciples Churches. The Cumberland branch church was founded in Tennessee in 1810 and took its name from the river in that area. It was a very active denomination for many years. A few are still to be found around here. Of particular interest to me is the fact that one of its early pastors, Reverend Oliver Dillard Allen, was my wife Louise s great-grandfather, who lies buried in the Barry Cemetery across the road. I spent several years researching this man and trying to find out more about him, and when we joined Barry Christian it made an interesting connection to our family. Reverend Allen was also a farmer and an 1877 Platte County map shows his property next to that of an early member of Barry Christian, a man named Lampton, who incidentally was an ancestor of John A. Dillingham, local stockman and businessman. Rev. Allen is buried next to another well-known family of Barry Christian, Bronaugh. So we can see there are several interconnections between that church and ours. At least one preacher served both churches. 5 High School Meet Our Graduates: Kristin Dyer will graduate from Oak Park High School on May 15, she plans to attend Missouri Western State University and major in Criminal Justice. Kristin s proud parents are Steve & Kelly Dyer and proud grandparents are Dave & Rita Dyer. Ashley Henry is graduating from North Kansas City High School on May 17 th with these honors: International Baccalaureate Honors Diploma, Gold Medallion Honors Diploma, National Honor Society, A+ Tutoring Program, Valedictorian. She will be attending Truman State University, Double major in Biology and Chemistry with a Minor in Spanish. Her Career Path: Biochemical Medical Researcher Her proud parents are Kelly & Jim Frentrop and David Henry. Proud grandparents are Hilde Henry and Jim & Phyllis Frentrop. Taylor Mills is graduating from Oak Park High School May 15 and will be going to Missouri State. Proud parents are Julie & Brian Mills and proud grandparents are Doris & Carroll O Neal. Alex Sawyer graduates May 17 from North Kansas City High School. He received 3 Journalism awards for NTV videos (NTV is the schools televised broadcasting network). Last year Alex enlisted in the United States Navy as an Electronic Technician. This year he was selected from a five state region to be in the United States Navy Cardinal Company. Alex will be sworn in the United States Navy on August 15 at Busch Stadium at the St. Louis Cardinals ball game. Melody Lair is Alex s proud mother and proud grandparents are Joseph (Joe) Gibbs and Luella & Don Scott. Brett Stone is graduating from Park Hill High School on May 19, He plans to attend William Jewell College and work for the College Newspaper. Proud parents are Jeff & Barbara Stone, proud grandparents are Don & Diana Stone Codie Wiswell, will graduate from Oak Park High School May 15, proud parents are Tim & Marcie Wiswell, proud grandparents are John & Mary Jane Adams. Codie plans to attend Maple Woods in the fall. College Graduates Robert Bratney, son of Lynn Bratney, is graduating from Pratt Institute in New York City in May with a Master of Science degree in Communications Design. He will be getting married to a Kansas City girl in August and they will live in Richmond, Virginia where she is working on her PhD in psychology. Jennifer Fleming graduated in December summa cum laude from the University of Missouri.

6 Food drive for the Pantry Pack Program during the month of May. We are requesting Complete Meals (boxed meals that come with meat) and/or peanut butter to help during the summer months when the kids will not be receiving their food packs. (The Pantry Pack program is separate from our Food Pantry) Koinonia Dinner Out - Monday, May 20, at Mi Ranchito, 5708 N Oak Trafficway We will meet there at 6:30 p.m. You are invited to join the Koinonia Class as they meet at a restaurant once a month for a meal and Fellowship. Everyone pays for their own meal. It is a fun way to meet people from the church. Reservations are not required, you just show up at the restaurant at the appointed time. All Church Picnic at the Barry Platte Park will be on Sunday, June 9 at 4:00 pm The Membership Committee will provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, and drinks. Please bring a side dish to share and a lawn chair. We will need volunteers to help bring items from the church to the park (and back), help with setting up and cleaning up. This is a great event every year. Mark your calendar and invite your friends/neighbors to join us. Annual Reports are due the week of May 20th them to groller@barrychristianchurch.com Monday, June 10 Chicken Tetrazzini will be served beginning at 6:00 Congregational Meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. What is a Congregational Meeting? This is a meeting in which the events of the past year are noted and leaders are chosen for the coming year. In addition, a vote is taken to approve the annual budget. This meeting is for all members of the church and is important that we have a large number in attendance since many important decisions are to be made. On July 14, at both at both services, we will be celebrating our bi-annual Infant Dedication. Children who were born since January 2013, or who haven t been able to participate in the past, are dedicated to God in a beautiful service that includes the whole congregation.
