George - rgeorge@barrychristianchurch.com Robert s Reflections T hings are cookin around Barry Christian Church this week! Everywhere you look there are chef s hats and aprons as the children are learning the right recipe for faithfulness. With the heat index soaring to over 100 degrees we are keeping our cool inside working with these recipe s that do not generate the same kind of heat one might find over a stove. The recipe we are using has a number of secret ingredients: One: Be ready! Two: Give Happily! Three: Believe with all of your heart! Four: Remember God loves you! Five: Celebrate forever! Sunday you will be able to get a small taste of the week by seeing the huge pile of food that is growing every day. It all goes into our food pantry to give away to people who need it. Offering Counters - Tellers, as we call them, and Teller helpers, are needed. If anyone is interested please call me at or meglitt@aol.com. You don't need to have a banking background we will train you and it only takes a couple hours Sunday after church. Thanks Megan Colombo The kids are rightfully proud of what they are accomplishing. I hope you will offer your own encouraging words to those who have shared in this good work. Don t forget the director, teachers and staff as you offer your hopeful and grateful words. Like all we do here, it could not happen without loving and dedicated volunteers! Love, Bob We will meet at noon (bring a lunch) or come at 1:00 p.m. if you just want to work.

3 P a g e 3 On July 24, at both services, we will be celebrating our bi-annual Infant Dedication. Children who were born since January 2011, or who haven t been able to participate in the past, are dedicated to God in a beautiful service that includes the whole congregation. Please call the c h u r c h o f f i c e : o r e m a i l rgeorge@barrychristianchurch.com if you wish to participate. Have you ever seen a baby porcupine? Fable of the porcupine It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the warmth that came from the others. This way they were able to survive. Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities. Executive Board Monday, August 1-7:00 p.m. The Executive Board acts as the decision making body of the church on alternate months when the General Board isn t meeting allowing the General Board (all the Elders, Deacons, Jr. Deacons, Committee Chairs, and At Large Members as well as church members) to meet only 6 times a year. Good night! Good night! Far flies the light; But still God s love Shall flame above, Making all bright. Good night! Good night! Victor Hugo SERVICE PROJECTS FOR ALL- Please continue to save UPC labels from Best Choice products and Campbell labels. Eye glasses are greatly needed. Gently used reading glasses purchased from drug stores or discount stores as well as those obtained from an eye doctor can be used. Please bring complete pairs only. Reading glasses are in great demand for those who sew or do other close work. The gift of a pair of glasses may provide someone with a means of earning a living. The glasses are taken to the Festival of Sharing in October.
4 Debra & Jim Ellsworth joined Barry on July 3, 2011 by Spiritual insomnia Studies show that most Americans don t get adequate sleep. Whether an overcrowded schedule or insomnia is to blame, the shortand long-term effects are alarming. It s tough to maintain a healthy mind and body when you re sleep-deprived. Likewise, we require sufficient, regular quiet time with God to stay spiritually healthy. Even Jesus needed time alone with God. Luke 5:16 says Jesus withdrew to deserted places to pray. Think how much more we need to listen for God s voice and learn from his Word! Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths. Etty Hillesum During the Month of July and into those first 2 weeks of August, The Outreach Committee once again will sponsor our; BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE Item favorites with the children include: School Supplies Undergarments (size 6) for the girls and boys, Boxers style (size 8) for the older boys Socks PJ s & NEW BACKPACKS (watch those Garage Sales, you may find some items that will pass new for our Neighborhood children!) The Outreach Committee thanks you for your commitment in helping the Children of the Northland!

What do we do? We Fellowship! We work together on projects such as collecting and assembling Church World Service Health Kits, Totes for Teens, School and similar kits for use in Missouri. We work at Clay County Clothes Closet on alternate months. We support the annual Turkey Dinner Bazaar and deliver baskets to the homebound. We have a sub-group that meets together monthly to do needlework (knitting, crocheting, etc) for charitable causes such as Cancer Action, Clothes Closet, local nursing homes and Prayer Shawls go be given within our congregation. This is a very informal group that does lots of visiting while we work. Many of us also attend meetings of the Clay/Platte Disciples Women, Regional DWF meetings and the Northland United Church Women on a regular basis. Our circles meet on the third Thursday of most months. These meetings consist of a brief business meeting, reports from our various committee chairs and a Bible based study and a brief worship time. Hanomi Circle meets at 10:00 a.m. and the Esther Circle meets at 7:00 p.m. Some of us bring a sack lunch and eat together before starting our needlework at 1:00 p.m. This is the beginning of a new year for Disciple Women (CWF.) What a great time to become active in one of our groups. If you questions call our President, Sue Effie ( ) Dorothy Taylor ( ) leader of the Hanomi Circle (Day Group) or Arleta White ( ) leader of the Esther Circle (Night Group) or any active CWF member. If meetings aren t your thing, you can still participate. Just show up at our Third Thursday needle Workers or watch for announcements about our service projects or special activities.
