1 Barry Good News Barry Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1840 Summer Worship Schedule May 25 - August 31 9:00 am - Sunday School 10:00 am - Worship August 19, 2014 Gail Roller, Editor Honor God, Serve Others, Seek Christ; Together What I like best about Barry Christian Church. Thanks to all the members and friends who took the time and effort to fill out the Congregational Survey. I was pleased and impressed that more than 100 people filled them out and wrote helpful comments. It shows me that you love our church family and care about our future. It was very helpful to the Search Committee and me as Transformation Pastor many want Three important skills in a new pastor. 1. Preparing sermons and worship 2. Calling on ill, homebound and members in crisis 3. Communication skills with biblical knowledge Three important characteristics in new Sr. Minister 1. Warm and loving, caring person 2. Concern for youth and families 3. Person who has humor Now, here is my input on things I like at Barry Christian Church: First, you have an excellent staff of leaders, starting with Gail Roller, Administrative Secretary. She is an Office Manager and does so many tasks for our church family and has served Barry for 12 years. Choir Director, Vigthor Zophoniasson and Hon Ki Cheung as Organist make a great team. I look forward to the choir in the fall and many specials with Ashley Wheat. They bring fresh music each week. Nick and Dena Roller do an outstanding job of keeping our church building neat and clean at all times. I am amazed at how clean it always is. Second, Barry Christian Church has an excellent location with room to grow and expand. We are having new people visit us each week. Welcome to Kathie Connell who joined us last Sunday and four new members since June. Third, our church family has a dedicated core of members who love, work and support Barry Christian Church with time, talent and money to help the church serve others now and in the future. This core of members have a vision and many goals which will help Barry Christian church reach into the next years. Please pray for our church family, the Search Team and for your church staff. I am blessed to be a part of such a wonderful team. Love in Christ, Pastor Bob

6 P a g e 6 Barry Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) NW Barry Rd, Kansas City MO Phone: August 12, 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Here we are at the end of the summer and it is time to re-evaluate and decide the direction we should go to continue the growth of our congregation. The one service has shown to be very rewarding. We are so blessed to have Pastor Bob, Hon Ki and Vigthor that contribute so much to the Spirit of Worship. The pews are beginning to fill. Together we are beginning to hear and fell the spirit of truth spoken and sung. You can feel and see things being done not as a duty assigned, but as a privilege to serve. There is still a ways to go and the enthusiasm that comes from worshiping together is heartwarming. We do not want to lose that Spirit by dividing our services too soon. A few thoughts were presented at the Executive Board meeting that should be shared concerning one service. Presently there are not enough Elders and Deacons to cover two services. Everyone would be able to enjoy the choir and it would promote more choir members. Getting to know other members is a plus and with our new name tags, we can put a face to a name. It is of utmost importance knowing the congregation s opinion on one or two services. We will have a congregational written ballot vote at the service on August 24, Please pray with an open heart that our Lord will instill in each of us the desire to serve and honor Him. Respectively yours, Edna Williams Chair of Worship Committee Next Newsletter Deadline - September 2
7 Please check out the youth bulletin board in the foyer outside the Sanctuary for the full handwritten thank you s and pictures. The following are excepts from those P a g e 7 I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the congregation for helping the youth raise the funds to go on their Yellowstone/Jackson Hole Adventure. I know the youth worked hard at fundraising for the trip but it was the congregation that truly supported them. This trip was set up as an Unplug an Unwind Trip before school started. I can honestly say they stayed true to the concept; there was minimal reception in the mountains! I didn t hear anyone complain. There were many moments that I would like to tell you about but that would take a couple of hours so I decided to shorten it to this: I was so proud of the youth especially their excitement when they would spot an animal(s) I think everyone s favorite was the bison we actually pulled off for about an hour so the kids could get out and watch the bison play, run, swim and roll in the dirt. The other thing would be each one of the kids enjoyed doing things without electronics like playing miniature golf, swimming, playing backgammon, playing bag o, playing board games, going on the float trip, walking trails, seeing wild animals, learning how to put up a tent, learn how to cook by the fire, or seeing amazing waterfalls. I hope you get a chance to see the bulletin board to the foyer next to the sanctuary. You might notice we had a couple up young ones with us, we had 4 youth cancel at the last minute and we had already prepaid for some things and we didn t what the money to be wasted. Looking forward to the future! In His Service, Anna Eacret Dear Barry Christian Church, I wanna thank everyone of you for helping us raise the money to go this trip. I had a great time. I loved everything from the great amazing view for miles to watching the animals run, play, eat and so much more. I will always remember this trip and I thank everyone of you.. It was nice to know God got to go and watched over us and made sure everyone was safe. Tiffany Eacret Dear Barry Christian Church, I just wanted to thank the members and supporter of the church and the youth group. I had such a wonderful time. I made and got closer friends, got to try and do new things and I got to see Yellowstone. I wouldn't of been able to do all that without the help of the church. So once again - thank you for such an amazing week. Love Charis Clark. Dear Barry Christian Church, I had an amazing time going on this trip! I saw a buffalo for the first time, I also had fun sightseeing the beautiful mountains and waterfalls. We made smores and hot dogs. I learned how to set up a tent and learned about the animals of Yellowstone. I am thankful for you guys helping us on this trip because this was a great experience. Sincerely: Mercedes Peck Thank you Barry Christian church for paying for this trip. I had some good times and bad times. The bad times are the rain and the good times are seeing the wild life, going through the mountain, riding to and from and getting on the river. Noah Thank you so much for helping us go on this trip. This was the best week of my life. We saw gorgeous waterfalls, stinky geysers, beautiful mountains and amazing wildlife encounters. A fox at night scared my mom and she was worried about bears. Ha! Ha! Best trip ever! Michelle Eacret Thank you for helping paying for the trip and we saw a whole bunch of animals. Wyatt Thank you for helping us raise the money to go on this trip. I enjoyed everything even the rainy days. My favorite part was seeing all the wildlife. It was nice since that was my first trip - so again, thank you. Ethan
