2 PASTOR S DESK The Doctrine of the Trinity has found new life in recent years and the effort to better understand this ancient understanding of God has born much fruit. As hard as it is to grasp that one God is composed of three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that at the same time they are unified as one God, this reality reveals some interesting conclusions. The first is that the God we meet in the Bible and the one we worship is by nature relational. Our God loves and thrives on relationships. There is a special relationship between Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one that is governed by agape love which is defined as other focused, self-giving. The very nature of God is relational love which extends to all of God s creation and to human beings who are created in God s likeness and image. Human beings who are created in God s image consequently inherit this same relational nature and are designed to relate to God and others. Think about it, when Jesus was asked to identify the greatest commandment he replied in a relational way, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul and with all your strength. The second is, love your neighbor as yourself. We were created in God s image to be in relationship with other people. Secondly, there is no hierarchy in God. In other words, no one is in charge. Father, Son and Holy Spirit live in a relationship of equality. What does this mean for us? We live in a world where people are judged by their status, position, level of education, amount of money earned, possessions they have acquired, etc. Just as Father, Son and Holy Spirit work together with humble love so we are to treat other people with love and respect for who they are, not what they possess, kind of work they do, or achievements they have attained. Finally, knowing that God is a loving community of three persons we can approach God without fear. Jesus told a parable about the Prodigal Son. In this story Jesus describes a young man who wants his inheritance from his father immediately so he can be free to live his own life. What he discovers is that he is not a good person to manage his own life and he quickly loses everything he owns. In his poverty, he remembers his father and thinks it might be possible to return home and serve his father as a slave or hired hand. On his way home he rehearses his apology (repentance) so his father will accept his proposal for servitude. But while he gets closer to home his father spots him from the house and runs out to meet his son. He throws his arms around him and welcomes him without ever hearing his son s apology. His father is full of joy that his son has returned. This story suggests to us that, with God, forgiveness precedes repentance. Said another way, the son s father loves him so much that when he sees him returning home he receives him without any spoken apology (which does come later). The father that Jesus describes in the story is not one we should approach with fear but with trust. That s the nature of the God revealed as Trinity, community of other directed self-giving who invites us to join the community of love! Peace, Pastor Jim

Procedure for Altar Flowers We would like to give you the opportunity to do altar flowers for a family member, graduation, anniversary, a special celebration or just saying Thanks Be to God! Notice an ALTAR FLOWERS sign up sheet in Narthex. HOW IT WORKS: 1. SIGN YOUR NAME ON YOUR CHOSEN DATE LINE 2. ADVISE THE WHO THE FLOWERS ARE FOR AND IF IT IS MEMORY OR HONOR 3. 7 FAITH FORMATION NEWS VBS is quickly approaching and we are recruiting Leaders for the program. This year our theme is Hero Central! It will be very exciting and a lot of fun! The dates are June 26 th through the 30 th from 6-9pm. We are hoping to have a dinner from 6-6:30pm each evening and invite the children and families to join us for fellowship. I will also be hosting a meeting after church on Sunday, May 7 th to discuss the theme, needs and opportunities to help. Leader Guides will be provided. Please let me know which Leader opportunity you are most interested in. Please prayerfully consider the options below for Leaders as they are still needed: Assembly/Music - leads the nightly assembly and teaches the songs and motions. Bible - teaches the nightly bible lesson to the groups Science - teaches a science lesson that coordinates with the day s theme. theme Craft - teaches and helps the children create different crafts that emphasize the day s Recreation - teaches and plays games with the crews that emphasize the day's theme. This will be a majority outside and active position. Reflection Time - leads a time of discussion, journaling and reflection that helps kids to consider the day s theme. Dinner Coordinator - this leader will be in charge of coordinating the nightly meal for the participants, kids and their families. Decoration/Scenery - this leader will work in collaboration with the VBS director to design and create the scenery for the program. Crew - these leaders will be in charge of a crew of children each night (likely 5-8 children in each crew of varying ages K-5th grade). Other - Sound, Media, Set up, Take Down, Dinner Helpers, Sign in/out each day and Assistants in rooms. There are a lot of fun opportunities this year and I will assign roles on a first come basis so let me know quickly where your interests are! Thank you! Shelly Rose

Cub Scout Troop 234 We are happy to provide a home for scouts weekly. HALOS is a group that assists Healing After a Loved One s Suicide which meets 2nd & 4th Monday s of the month. COMMUNITY OUTREACH BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS MOW s We provide a home for the Monday thru Friday Seminole County Meals on Wheels as a meeting place to receive meals and also for workers to pick up the meals to deliver to shut ins. FOOD PANTRY The pantry appreciates everyone s support in providing food or a financial donations assisting in our mission to help our neighbors in need. MATTHEW 25: Ministries, Inc. Collects empty pill bottles. Please remove any personal information and bring your bottles to the church and place in the depository. Also to help defray the cost in shipping please consider leaving a donation in one of the bottles. THANKS! Local American Cancer Society Group This group provides action in fundraising to support the American Cancer Society and research. Watch for events forthcoming. You are certainly welcomed to support! Writer s Group An independent group of individuals to meet the last Monday of the month to review their writing and publications. Supporting one another in their endeavors.
