3 Minute for Mission: Earth Day Sunday Earth Care Congregation Certification is one of the many ways that the Presbyterian Hunger Program seeks to be faithful to our responsibility to care for creation. The goal of the ECC program is to inspire churches to care for God s earth in a holistic way, through integrating earth care into all of church life. New Life Presbyterian Church in Roseville, Minnesota, is just one of the 207 ECC churches that were certified in Nine years ago, after their initial certification as an Earth Care Congregation, New Life decided that they wanted to change their fellowship time and meals to be as green as possible. This was done in a variety of ways, including the usage of fair trade coffee and locally sourced foods. They also decided to try to follow a 2008 General Assembly resolution that dealt with not using disposable food service products or plastics. Carole Rust from New Life s Earth Care Team shared that in order to accomplish that task, they knew they d need lots of willing hands. We developed a dishwashing team which is called the Bubble Brigade. We give people the chance to join the brigade when the church kicks off activities in the fall and then when we celebrate Earth Day Sunday in the spring. Some dishwashers are regulars and help almost every Sunday while others do special events like potlucks or funerals. Still others are on call for part-time, special-requested duty. Brigade members are a fun bunch that usually work in groups of two and cover the spectrum from an expectant mom-to-be, young couples, a family with youth, singles and people in their 70s! Last Earth Day Sunday, New Life recognized all of the members of the Bubble Brigade and even gave bottles of bubble-blowing solution to the two most faithful members. The Bubble Brigade is a simple way to help with creation care and it gives people a chance to provide a meaningful gift of service to support their church community. 4 We welcome Patti Dahl and Dee Eggert today as they share their country gospel music and message with us. From songs like Cowboy Boots and Jesus to Stand Up Church Patti Dahl and Heartsong have been performing for two decades. Patti is a licensed evangelist and is an elder for the state of Connecticut for the Gospel Ministerial Alliance. Dee is a retired police officer who lives on a farm with her husband. They both enjoy Harleys, Mustangs and drag racing. She is a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. They have recorded 10 CDs and performed around the world. Start your seedlings, search your yard for plants you can donate or consider making a donation so we can buy flats of flowers. Dust off your recipes and find some goodies to help our bake sale. 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS NURSERY CARE DURING WORSHIP is provided for infants and children through the second grade. Parents are asked to take their child (ren) to the nursery during the hymn just before the sermon. The nursery is found through the door to the left of the pulpit, down the hall on the left. Children who are in the third grade and older should remain with their families during the worship service. THE ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY continues to meet a growing need in the Ichabod Crane School district. They are grateful for all donations of non-perishable foods (that have a future expiration date) and are asking particularly at this time for pickles, and cooking oil. If you have any questions about the Food Pantry or how you might get involved, speak with Dorothy Johnson or Carol Matthews, our representatives on the Food Pantry Committee. Consider giving flowers for a Sunday worship service. A sign-up sheet is in the back for you to give the information necessary for the bulletin and a form to fill out and put in the Secretary s box. You may bring any flowers you want from the garden or store arranged. We all appreciate the beauty of creation! It s not too late to make a contribution to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. We will be collecting through next Sunday. A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. Please give generously. The Annual Plant and Bake Sale will be on Saturday May 19 from 9:00am. to 1:00pm. In addition to our need for plants, baked goods and cafe, we are looking to sell used books also. As you do your Spring cleaning hey! we can hope, can t we? clean out those book shelves and donate them. They always sell well! We will collect things from Sunday May 13 after church through Friday evening. So start those seedlings, look around the yard for plants that will need to be thinned out, dig out those favorite recipes for all those goodies and search for all those books taking up room. We need your support! The May-June edition of Our Daily Bread and The Upper Room is available on the table. Consider picking up a copy of this helpful devotional and making it a part of your daily time of prayer and Bible reading.
