You can this summer during our Vacation Bible School, June Here are some of the things to be experienced this year: Market Place Shops and Roman School those attending will experience hands on crafts as well as being a part of a Roman school setting where Latin and Roman numerals are learned. Underground Cave early Christians sometimes met in secret locations like caves to avoid being imprisoned by Roman soldiers. Beware of Roman soldiers walking about trying to find the secret location of worshiping believers. Paul Under House Arrest learn how Paul used two years of house arrest to witness and lead one of his guards to Jesus. As we have done for several years, Supper will be served at 5:00 PM in our Family Life Center with our 12 Tribes of Israel meeting in the sanctuary at 5:30 PM. Adults, Youth, Children, Preschoolers, come be a part of experiencing Paul and the Underground Church. Thank you Rebecca Goff for the time and energy put into enlisting volunteers and making plans for this year s VBS. It s going to be great! God Is Closer Than is our Wednesday night adult summer group study. We will begin on June 7 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Cost is $10 for a book. See me if you would like a book. If a nursery is needed, we will provide one, so let me know. Pray for our Weekend Revival, August 4-6. Pray for Joel Nelson and all who will be participating. Our theme is Shine Jesus Shine. 2 Farewell to Dr. Fred Anderson, long-time Executive Director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society by Cindy Miller Fred Anderson, Executive Director, Virginia Baptist Historical Society 1979 to 2017 F red Anderson faithfully served as Executive Director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society (VBHS) for 38 years. He retired the end of May. In 1979, Fred became the first full-time executive director of the Historical Society. In 2000, he helped establish the Center for Baptist Heritage and Studies to minister alongside the society with a focus on education. In 1981, he designed the University Archives for the University of Richmond and began assembling a large collection of collegiana related to the University. He served as University Archivist. In 1982, he was elected clerk of the Baptist General Association of Virginia. In 1983, he began writing a regular heritage column for the Religious Herald. He wrote over 1,100 of the heritage columns. He has authored 13 books about Baptists. Fred Anderson frequently spoke at church anniversaries and homecomings, appearing in costume as a character from Baptist history. In 2006, he presented himself at Shiloh s 150 th anniversary celebration as Dr. William E. Hatcher, a noted 19th-century minister. He appeared as Dr. Hatcher on over 400 occasions throughout Virginia. He also has presented as Elder John Leland, the prominent 18th-century Baptist spokesman for religious liberty, on over 60 occasions including an appearance on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. Nathan L. Taylor, new Executive Director, VBHS Fred Anderson, whether in costume or as himself, is a storyteller. Thousands of visitors to the Heritage Gallery have heard him tell the stories of Virginia Baptists and their contributions to the securing of religious liberty and their advances in the area of missions. The VBHS Executive Committee met April 6 and elected Nathan L. Taylor to take Fred s place. Nathan comes to VBHS from Central Baptist Church in Richmond. If you d like to welcome Nathan or show your appreciation to Fred for all he has done for Shiloh and our heritage, please send letters or cards to Virginia Baptist Historical Society, PO Box 34, University of Richmond, VA About Virginia Baptist Historical Society Founded in 1876 by those interested in preserving Baptist history and by the Baptist General Association of Virginia, the Virginia Baptist Historical Society soon became a premier institution within the field of historical organizations in religious history. It early became a repository of Baptist congregational records and other tangible documents and artifacts of the Baptist story. Its collection became widely used by scholars, local church historians, denominational workers, pastors, and students of Baptist history. (Some of the content from Taylor photo from

Please pray for our teens this summer as they will be involved in various activities learning how to minister to not only our congregation but also to others in our state, country, and around the world. In addition to our group of 8 teens going to the Danville, VA for summer missions with Impact! Virginia, we have 2 teens going out on individual missions projects in June. Shane Hagewood will be involved in missions work in Miami, FL and Mahala Becker will be leaving in June for missions work in Honduras. Enjoy your summer! Our regular Wednesday and Sunday night activities will resume in September. June 3 June 4 June :00 pm July :00 am July July Area 51 Impact! Music Camp (sign up on the choir bulletin board to be a helper) Middle Camp Piankatank High Impact! Virginia in Danville Children s Ministry By Rebecca Goff Vacation Bible School! What a wonderful time when the whole church is busy with activity. VBS is June from 5:00-8:00 pm. We have classes for ages 0 to 105. We are serving dinner to everyone that comes to VBS. Dinner kicks off our VBS every night at 5:00 pm. This will be followed by the opening and then on to music. The children will be divided into tribes and we ll have games, visits from missionaries, crafts in the Roman marketplace, and the best part is each child will get to experience the Apostle Paul and the Underground Church where kids will learn God's love is a gift, it changes us, is always with us, saves us, and is worth sharing. We are also going to have a youth class and an adult class. Then we will close everything out by 8:00 pm. You don t want to miss this wonderful time of food, fun, fellowship, and seeing what God has done so invite your friends, neighbors and family! VBS is the biggest outreach for our church so that means it takes our church to run VBS. We will need many volunteers. If you would like to volunteer and I have not yet talked to you, please let me know where you would be interested in volunteering! See you at VBS! Missions By Brenda Hastings During the month of June and the first half of July, Shiloh will be collecting snacks for The Haven in Warsaw, VA, a shelter for women & children of domestic violence. These snacks will go to the children living at the center. These need to be individually wrapped snacks, please do not bring large containers of an item (such as a gallon of goldfish!). Place your donated items on the table next to the Missions Bulletin Board. Sunday School By Gail Davis "It's summertime and the living is easy" goes the words of the song. There's fishing, picnics, ball games, swimming, and lots of other fun family and friends things to do. But does that mean your fellow church members can do without you and your fellowship, your biblical insight, your support and concern? It's vacation time for sure, yet it's still church family time too. Staying "in the Word" and studying with friends don't take away from the fun, these activities will lift your spirit so you can enjoy all the other blessings of this wonderful season. Spend time in study and worship each Sunday morning. Sunday School starts at 9:45! Hope to see you here.
4 Women of Shiloh By Brenda Hastings We are off to a great first year of our bi-monthly meetings with the Women of Shiloh! Thanks to all who came out to make soup for our homebound, as well as to those who helped deliver and visit. At the past meeting, we also talked about our leadership team. Positions still needed are: Leader (or 2 Co-leaders) responsible for the overall bi-monthly meetings. Mission Action Leader responsible for mission projects. If you are interested in these positions, please contact Brenda Hastings, Lee Lynn Crowell, or Angela Clatterbuck. Our next meeting will be a cookout in July. Note that the time will be at 11:30 instead of 9:30. This will be a laid back meeting, especially designed for fellowship with one another. All women, ages 18 and up are invited to attend! Hot dogs, hamburgers & drinks will be provided by the church. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. If you forget to bring something come anyway!! The purpose is to get to know one another the food is just a side note! It has been a wonderful year with great success on Wednesday night. We had lots of children and adults participating in music. Don't worry, we won't slow down too much for the summer. We still have Vacation Bible School and you cannot forget Music Camp. If you haven't already, be sure to sign up on the bulletin board outside of the choir room. Children who have completed 2nd grade thru 7th grade can participate in music camp and it is loads of fun! I am also looking for volunteers to help out so let me know if you are available. Thanks!
