1 CABOT UMC NEWS A community of faith striving to be Spirit-filled while experiencing Christ s limitless transformation through relationships, worship and service. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! from Bro. Stephen As I reflect back on 2018 and look forward to 2019, I just want to let you know how much Leila and I love being part of your church family. It is an honor and privilege to serve you and we are excited about what the future holds (How can we not be? We serve a Mighty God). Thank you for the wonderful cards, candies and Christmas gifts you gave to my family and me. Over the last year, you have blessed us in so many ways and continue to do so. I look forward to what God has in store for us this coming year. In anticipation of the New Year, I ve been praying for God s guidance and wisdom as to how I need to spend my time. In what way is God calling me to invest in you as your pastor? A verse out of the book of Hebrews kept coming to mind: let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity Heb. 6:1. In a word, the impression I got was GROW. Not only are we calling the first series of the year GROW but this theme will permeate everything we do in As followers of Christ we have a responsibility to grow up in the faith. As we mature spiritually we are able to distinguish good from evil (Hebrews 5:14). When we can identify evil it s much easier to avoid it and when we avoid it, by default, we are living a more holy life and that s the goal of Christian maturity. 1 Peter 2:1-3 says, Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. I am often reminded of how much I don t know about the things of God. My worldview and the lens through which I see God s Kingdom is so small and I want it to be big. I want the same vision Christ has for His people and in order to get closer to that, I have to continue to study, pray, serve, worship and interact with other Christians. I have to be deliberate about how I spend my time and where I invest my energy. Therefore, in 2019 I m going to focus on getting closer to Christ so that I may GROW. I m inviting you to join me on this journey and we, as a church staff, will provide you with opportunities to experience Christ anew as we GROW together. 2019, Here We Come!! Blessings & Peace, Bro. Stephen
2 Sermon Series starting Sunday, Jan. 6th I m asked on a regular basis for spiritual advice. It is a great joy to guide people toward Christ. One of the most common questions I am asked is, "how do I grow as a Christian?", from people who feel they are stuck spiritually, or growing at a painfully slow pace. I m actually excited when people ask me this because it lets me know they want more out of their relationship with Christ. Too many self-proclaimed Christians aren t interested in growing. They feel comfortable with their past salvation in that they received Christ, and their future salvation in that they will go to heaven one day. But they are not very interested in how to walk out their salvation in the present. Following Jesus is a lifelong process, not a one-and-done moment. We are commanded in Scripture to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). We Wesleyans believe that behind the biblical and theological themes of the meaning of creation, the fall of humanity, the understanding of law and grace, the meaning of justification, and the new birth, the ministry and work of the Holy Spirit is the call to holiness. Someone who is growing spiritually will become more and more like Christ. The spiritually mature will be able to "distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:14). This series, GROW, is going to help all of us understand the importance of growing and give us a pathway, or process, by which to do it. 1/6/2018 Why Grow? 1/13/2018 Why Worship? 1/20/2018 Why Study God s Word? 1/27/2018 Why Serve? 2/3/2018 Why Together? 5 As you do your weekly grocery shopping, please consider helping our CUMC Food Pantry with a donation. The Food Pantry currently needs donations of shelf-stable milk, cereal and corn muffin mix. We appreciate your donations and continued support of this ministry throughout the year! The Sager Brown adult mission trip to Baldwin, LA will take place April The total fee is $255, with half being due by January 15 th for those who plan to attend. This is a wonderful, inspirational trip. For more information, please contact Jean Davenport at The Christmas Feast was a HUGE success! If you brought food, toys or boxes, if you cooked a turkey or dressing or baked a pie, if you helped financially, if you prayed, if you came on Christmas morning and volunteered, thank you! Those words seem so inadequate, but it is truly heartfelt. There is always a sense of panic leading up to the day but much like the story of the loaves and fishes, there is always enough, and more. The numbers are not available right now, but we will get those to you. Again, thank you. You have been an example of Christ s love to our community. ATTENTION!! Due to several openings in Kids Rock, we will postpone meeting on our regular Wednesday night schedule until more leaders are in place. Leaders and/or circle leaders are still needed in the following areas: Pre-School Games Leader 1 st & 2 nd Grade Games Leader 3 rd & 4 th Grade Games Leader Circle Leader with 4-year-olds
