CABOT UMC NEWS A community of faith striving to be Spirit-filled while experiencing Christ s limitless transformation through relationships, worship and service. On August 5 th, we started taking a look at the Biblical understanding of how to be a good neighbor and why it matters. The New Testament is clear that our call and our purpose is to live in community in such a way that God is glorified. How we relate to God and one another is the basis of society according to God it s the kingdom on earth. That s why, when Jesus was asked a trick question by a Pharisee as to what was the most important command in the law for the Israelites, Jesus said, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments. (Matt. 22:37-40) This is HUGE, so come check out How To Neighbor! 8/5 - #6 You must not murder. 8/12 - #7 You must not commit adultery. 8/19 - #8 You must not steal. 8/26 - #9 You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. 9/2 - #10 You must not covet. On Sunday, Aug. 26 th, Brother Stephen will offer a Starting Point Class at 10:00 a.m. in Room E117 in the Wesley Center. If you are new to our church or have been visiting for awhile, we encourage you to attend this class. This is a good opportunity to get information about Cabot UMC, about the Christian faith, and about the Methodist Church. FALL 2018 ADULT BIBLE STUDY CLASSES It s that time again! School is getting ready to start, and our Kids Rock, Club 56 and youth programs are going to be meeting again on Wednesday nights. We have several adult Bible Study classes starting in the next month to help you dive deeper into God s Word and develop a closer relationship with Him. Sign-up sheets for the following classes have been set out in the narthex, outside of the FLC and in the Wesley Center foyer. We encourage you to take a look at all that is being offered and sign up for a class.

Discover Your Spiritual Gifts Beginning Sunday Morning, Aug. 10:00 a.m. (This class will also be offered on Wednesday nights starting on Oct. 17 th. More details to come soon!) Cost: $15 Leader: Sarah Hagge Room: E108 In this class you will take a journey of self-discovery as you learn more about how the Body of Christ is intended to function, and what that means to each person. This study leads adults through assessing their spiritual gifts, talents and abilities, resources, individual style, dreams and experiences all adding up to an enhanced capacity to serve God and neighbor. Basic Christian Beliefs Beginning Wednesday Night, Sept. 6:00 p.m. Cost: $12 Length: 24 weeks Leader: Tony Pini A guide to the whats, whys, and hows of the Christian faith for new believers. Thirty-six short, easy to follow chapters deepen your understanding of biblical doctrines, while helping you apply them to everyday life. Learn what God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have done for the world and for you. Gain a better understanding of the spiritual world, salvation, and the Bible. Disciple I Fast Track Beginning Wednesday Night, Sept. 6:00 p.m. Cost: 2 books, $20 each Length: 24 weeks Leader: Nick Schimmer A unique opportunity to enjoy a comprehensive Bible study with a small group of people. Each week includes manageable daily Bible readings and a 75-minute group session that combines discussion and video presentation. Join in this 24-week life-changing experience and engage the whole story of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation.

Disciple II Fast Track Beginning Wednesday Night, Sept. 6:00 p.m. Cost: 2 books, $20 each Length: 24 weeks Leader: Ray Vining Into the World identifies some needs in the world for which ministry is needed, and suggests possible responses. It then invites participants to summarize the scripture message that will shape their ministry and to decide what response and commitment to make to that message. Each week you will be guided in experiencing the gift of Sabbath rest and renewal. Classes meet for a total of 24 weeks, studying Genesis through Exodus, and then Luke through Acts, for 12 sessions each. Daily preparation is manageable, with 3 5 chapters of the Bible to read each day. Disciple IV Beginning Wednesday Night, Sept. 6:00 p.m. Cost: $45 Length: 32 weeks Leader: Andy Cameron This is the final study in the four-phase Disciple program. The study concentrates on Old Testament Writings, the Gospel of John, the Epistles of John, James, Jude, and finally, Revelation. Emphasis on the Psalms as Israel s hymnbook and prayer book leads naturally to an emphasis on worship in the study. Present through the entire study is the sense of living toward completion toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in Revelation. Jesus Among Secular Gods Beginning Wednesday Night, Sept. 6:00 p.m. Cost: $15 Leader: Steve Chamness This insightful study faces today s most urgent tests to Christian faith. It will help seekers to explore the claims of Christ and will provide Christians with the knowledge to articulate why they believe that Jesus stands above all other gods. The authors point to the truth of Christianity and demonstrate that its major doctrines resonate with both reason and experience.

Love To Stay Beginning Sunday Afternoon, Sept. 9 from 3:30 5:30 p.m. Cost: $15 Leaders: Pat & Sarah Hagge In this book, Adam Hamilton explores how, with God s help, we can make love last. Drawing upon a survey of thousands of couples and singles, interviews with relationship and marriage therapists, the latest research in the field, and wisdom from the Bible, Hamilton looks at what it takes to create and sustain healthy, meaningful romantic relationships across the course of a lifetime. God Owns It All Beginning Sunday Afternoon, Sept. 9 from 3:30 5:30 p.m. Cost: $13 Leaders: Butch & Carol Randolph God Owns It All tackles the money question we all ask: How much is enough? The answer to this question is found in God s Word. With over four decades of experience in the financial-services industry, Ron Blue presents financial principles that are affirmed by the authority of Scripture and tested by the marketplace. He knows that will equip us to approach money management and financial planning with freedom, generosity, contentment, and confidence. When we apply the biblical truths offered in this study, our finances will be in order, our decisions will be simplified, and our experience will invite contentment in all areas of our lives. Unafraid Beginning Tuesday Morning, Sept. 10:00 a.m. Cost: TBD Leader: Harriet Meadows Room: E104 People have always experienced fear, and always will, says the Rev. Adam Hamilton. It s part of who we are and how we are wired. In many ways, fear is even a good thing that warns us of potential dangers. In his new book, Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times, Hamilton draws upon research, stories and Scripture to examine the nature of fear and anxiety today and how people can learn to face them.

The Armor of God Beginning Wednesday Morning, Sept. 10:00 a.m. Cost: $18 Leader: Vicki Msall Room: E104 A devoted, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you: your heart, your mind, your marriage, your children, your relationships, your resilience, your dreams, your destiny. But his battle plan depends on catching you unaware and unarmed. The enemy always fails miserably when he meets a woman dressed for the occasion. The Armor of God, more than merely a biblical description of the believer s inventory, is an action plan for putting it on and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory. 9 Some of you who attended church as children may remember having only one or two Sunday School teachers all year long. We recognize that not many people are willing to make that kind of commitment these days, so in 2003 we made a huge change in our church school program, changing the format to Workshop Rotation. It is based on the idea that children have different learning styles, so presenting one story in several different learning environments creates a better understanding of the stories. The format also allowed us to create teaching teams to take the load off of just one or two teachers per grade. At the time, our parents and teachers were very excited about the idea of only being asked to teach for one or two rotations a year instead of dreading that Ms. Darlene would ask them to make that year-long commitment. As time has passed, it seems we have all gotten into our comfort zone and it seems harder and harder for people to commit to teaching even one or two rotations. Passing on our faith from one generation to the next is an important responsibility, and one that our church takes seriously. Faith is a part of life s journey, and is formed largely by interaction with other people of faith. The congregation and the church must be partners in the faith formation of our children. We need several more workshop leaders to join our team in order to pass down the lessons of our faith to these precious children of God. We cannot be selfish about where we spend our Sundays. There are 52 Sundays in a year. If you attend church regularly, you probably spend anywhere from 35 to 45 or more of those Sundays in church. We have 10 5-week workshops in The Riverwalk this year. Our goal is to have five leaders on each workshop teaching team, which means that each team member would only spend 10 Sundays out of 52 sharing their faith with our children. What a privilege!! Next Sunday (August 19) at 10:00a.m., we will have a workshop leader orientation/information meeting for everyone who is being called (or even wonders if they MIGHT be called!) to fill these gaps in our teaching teams. Please come and invite others to come with you. We will have some of our experienced leaders there to help answer any questions you might have. It s time to get out of your comfort zone. You rarely have the opportunity to share your faith from there! ACOLYTE TRAINING Sunday, August 26, at 3:00 p.m. (right before the Back to School Bash). All 3 rd 6 th Graders are invited to serve as acolytes in The River; & all 3 rd Graders - Youth are invited to serve in both sanctuary services!
