One of the things that became very clear very quickly is that Bethany is committed to being an active part of her James Island community. This church has always striven to be an integral part in the local community, and the events taking place here at the church this month are a wonderful example of that drive! As you ll notice when flipping through the pages of this newsletter, October is a very busy month for us here at Bethany, and there are loads of opportunities for folks in our community to join us for special events. Our Pumpkin Patch is our most visible community event, and it ll be starting very soon! We can always use volunteers both to help unload the pumpkins on the 8 th or throughout the rest of the month to help man the booth be sure to let us know if you can sign up. The 8 th will also hold our Men s BBQ, which is always a good time be sure to plan to attend. At the end of the month is our super-fun Trunk-or-Treat. Last year we had around 200 kids and their families come, and we hope to have just as many, if not more, this year! It s a great time to decorate a trunk and pass out candy with all of your church friends and family we hope you ll be able to come! This month also holds several special worship services for you to attend. Our sermons this month (after our final Abraham story on the 6 th ) will have us thinking about what sort of church we should be what are some of the marks of a vibrant church? As a part of that series, we ll have our Stewardship/Pledge Sunday on the 23 rd along with a Celebration Breakfast inbetween the services. We hope you ll consider making a pledge to help us in setting our church budget for the coming year. We ll also be having a short Blessing of the Animals service, complete with individual animal blessings, on the afternoon of the 16 th, outside all well-mannered creatures invited! And last, but not least, don t forget to mark your calendars for our 5 th Sunday Combined Service on October 30 th we ll have ONE worship service at 10:00. Be sure to come and worship with your entire Bethany family! Meeting together in Christian community is one of the things that makes being a part of a local church so important, both in worship and in times of fellowship. I hope you ll plan to attend some (or all) of our special events this month, and take the opportunity to invite others in our community to join in the fun! 1853 Maybank Highway * Charleston, SC * Phone: * Fax: * Rev. Kayla Harward

4 Page 4 Th e Bethany Buzz October 2016 PACK A GIFT & PRAY. A shoebox filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies tangibly demonstrates God s love to a child in need. Guides for how to pack a shoebox and other pertinent information will be available in an upcoming bulletin. Remember to pray that God will touch the heart of every child who receives a shoebox gift, and that many children and families will come to faith in Jesus Christ. A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child. Bring filled boxes (with $7 for shipping) to church office by Friday, November 18th to make sure they get to the children by Christmas. Extra empty shoeboxes are available in the Church Office. Charge Conference will be On Nov. 6th at 3:30 pm. Please remember to check your mail boxes and Bulletin board for updates and mail!!! Our combined service will be Oct 30, Service will start at 10:00 am. Please check with your Sunday School classes as to when you will meet. It has come to our attention that the Memorials and Honorarium have been missed in the past newsletters. 5 Page 5 Th e Bethany Buzz October 2016 Common Threads Prayer Quilt Ministry: In just a few short years 42 quilts has gone out, several recently. Prayer Quilts are given to those who have suffered major illness and need the prayer and support from the congregation. Request forms are on the bulletin board and also in the office. If you request a Prayer Quilt it is your responsibility to first ask the recipient if he/she is willing to accept the quilt and how the congregation should direct their prayers on his/her behalf. The requester is also responsible for delivering the quilt. Along with the quilt each recipient receives a card signed by you, the congregation, letting the recipient know they have our prayers and support. The Prayer Quilt Ministry is grateful for the volunteers who give of their time and talent and for you who donate to this important ministry. Children's Mission Offering in November will go to this mission ministry. We encourage you to be part of this ministry of our church. If you want information about joining us in stitching these quilts call or Life Line Screening, a leading provider of communitybased preventive health screenings, will offer their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at Bethany United Methodist Church on 12/7/2016. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call or visit community-partners. Please See Heather in the office or the bulletin board to reserve your appointment!!! This is open to the general public as well and if you know anyone who would like to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity please have them get in touch with the office. Members of Bethany, There are no words adequate enough to express our gratitude to the members of Bethany Methodist Church for all the love and support you gave to Lional through the years. You all had a special place in his heart. Lionel thoroughly enjoyed Sunday School, Church, the music program and social events. Anything with music and or food was his favorite! The love and support that flowed from the Bethany family the night of visitation at McAlister s was amazing! As different members came up and introduced themselves and began to talk about Lionel, we felt the love and respect you all had for him and we learned a few new things about Lionel that we did not know!the comfort and reassurance you gaveto us as Lionel s adopted family was very touching and very much appreciated. 6 Page 6 Th e Bethany Buzz October 2016 Questions of Faith: How do I pray? Last month we looked at that most mysterious of things, prayer. This month we ll take a more practical look at different ways that we can pray, a how-to guide, if you will. The first thing to note about prayer is that there is no wrong way to go about it and getting started is mostly about simply taking the initiative to just do it! That being said, many people feel intimidated by the act of prayer (and perhaps rightly so it is how we talk one-on-one to the almighty God!) and so it s helpful to have a variety of options to try when learning to be comfortable in prayer. Probably the most familiar form of prayer is to follow a standard formula. I was taught the ACTS prayer when I was younger: Adoration praising God for all of God s goodness, Confession asking for forgiveness for things we ve done or failed to do, Thanksgiving for God s gifts, blessings, the people in our lives, Supplication asking for things we and others need. Written prayers often follow this sort of formula and are often helpful to pray as well. Prayers like the Lord s Prayer or prayers written in devotional guides such as the Upper Room or in books or websites of prayers are useful to pray when you have trouble forming your own words. Similarly, praying passages of scripture is a powerful way to find words to express what you might be needing to speak to God. Find a verse or a passage of scripture that has meaning to you and pray it according to your situation. The words of the psalms are a good place to start - there s a psalm for to every situation. If you re looking for more creative ways to try praying, you can find communication with God outside of spoken formal prayer. One of the oldest forms of prayer is called a breath prayer, Repeat a spiritual word or phrase, such as Come, Lord Jesus again and again as you breathe in and out, creating a rhythm and a source of prayerful meditation. Some people find it helpful to pray while looking at images or icons: by finding a picture of a person or a story from scripture, you can imagine yourself within the scene and allow yourself to feel how those present must have felt and how they might have chosen to pray to God in that moment. Music is also another wonderful prayer tool. The lyrics of a hymn or a song can give words to your prayer as they are sung, read aloud, or simply listened to. You can also pray with movement, giving meaning to even routine tasks. I once had a pastor tell me that she would pray when washing the dishes, asking Jesus to cleanse her as she was cleaning each dish. Or you might pray while walking around your neighborhood, asking the Holy Spirit to be present in each home you pass. However you choose to pray, alone or with others, the important thing is that you make the time to do it. Even five minutes a day can have an effect on how you understand God and God s desire for you. Schedule time in this month to try out one or more of the prayer strategies listed above! Gumbel, Nicky.
