God is still speaking FOSTER MEMORIAL CHURCH, UCC THE CHRONICLE December 2018 Dear friends, Time is flying and we re almost in Advent. This season is about waiting and preparing for Jesus to be born, once again, into our hearts and into the world. These are certainly troubled times, in our nation and in the world. May these words by Madeline L Engle serve as a source of comfort, strength and joy for us during this holy season: God did not wait till the world was ready, till nations were at peace. God came when the heavens were unsteady and prisoners cried out for release. God did not wait for the perfect time. God came when the need was deep and great. God dined with sinners in all their grime, turned water into wine. God did not wait till hearts were pure. In joy, God came to a tarnished world of sin and doubt. To a world like ours, of anguished shame, God came and God s light would not go out. God came to a world which did not mesh; to heal its tangle, shield its scorn. In the mystery of the Word made Flesh, the makers of the stars was born. We cannot wait till the world is sane to raise our songs with joyful voice, or to share our grief, to touch our pain. God came with love. Rejoice! Rejoice! The deadline for submitting articles or announcements for The October issue of The Chronicle is December 14 In Christ, Barbara

Special thanks to all who served as hosts. If you missed this opportunity, please speak to Pastor Barbara to have a photo taken or to submit a photo. SALE OF PURITAN ROAD HOUSE With a great deal of patience and goodwill on the part of the Montoya family, the sale of the Puritan Road house was finally completed with the Church retaining a right of first refusal on a future sale of the property. After payment of closing costs as provided in the Purchase and Sale Agreement, the net recovery for the Church was just under $127, The plan for use of the proceeds of the sale is to invest them and then transfer the earnings on that investment into the Church s general funds to help support the budget as necessary. The Finance Committee and Endowment Committee will meet to decide where the money should be invested, and which group will be responsible for overseeing that investment going forward. The church currently has funds invested in several Vanguard mutual funds and also in United Church Funds, an investment program managed by the UCC. Both of those programs as well as other investment vehicles will likely be considered. A special thank you is given to Alice Kempf who did an enormous amount of work to get the sale completed and to Jim Cummings and the Board of Trustees for their work as well. CAROLING Everyone is invited to join us for caroling on Sunday, December 9 after coffee hour. We ll carpool to the Wellington at 11:45 a.m and return around 1 PM. Please join us! Page 6 Page 7
