1 St Joseph s Catholic Primary School Wandal STUDENT EDITION #1 8 AUGUST 2018 Top stories in this newsletter Students take over Board Meeting Catholic Education Week Book Week Last week, I visited the Year Ones and was telling them about my busy week this week. I explained that I have three days of meetings and training this week, plus many prep interviews to conduct. The students were willing to help me out and together, we decided that the Year One students could help out by writing my section of the newsletter. I am sure you will all agree that the Year One s have done a marvellous job. We hope to make one newsletter each term a designated student written edition; writing for a purpose and a real audience is such a beneficial process for our developing writers! Have a wonderful week everyone, Kellie Student Take Over Scan the QR code with a QR reader to find out how Year 1s reacted to finding out they were in charge of the newsletter this week. Dear Mrs Jenkinson, We are happy because you let us do things that other Principals wouldn t do. We loved pretending to be you in the Newsletter. (Reporters Evie and Ben) Board Meeting There s a Board Meeting on the 16 August. All board members can come at 6 o clock PM. (Reporters Max, Kristen and Indigo) Catholic Education Week Thank you everyone for coming to the Catholic Education Week Mass at the Cathedral. Congratulations to Mrs Hutchinson for your special award. If you didn t go, you should congratulate her in person. Also, thank you to Mrs Starr for organising fun activities for the kids during Catholic Education Week. By Harriet, Sarah and Hunter Pick up Zone The pick up zone is not where it used to be. You have to now pick up past the lollypop area. Teachers are showing parents where to go. You need to park either side of the silver poles to keep the zebra crossing area safe. It is a bit disappointing that some adults are not being patient and making good choices. Let s make sure we are safe and sensible! By Blaine and Amelia

3 Religious Education News Jn 6:24-35 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst. When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered: I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal. Then they said to him, What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants? Jesus gave them this answer, This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent. So they said, What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus answered: I tell you most solemnly,it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Sir, they said give us that bread always. Jesus answered: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst. Mary MacKillop Feast Day What is a Feast Day you ask? A Feast Day is an important day that is recognised on the same date each year and is celebrated by Catholics, especially kids at Catholic Schools. Mary MacKillop was a great person who helped children. She cared for all and spent her life giving to the poor. Today the whole school enjoyed cake in memory of Australia s first Saint - Saint Mary of the MacKillop. Enjoy the beautiful student artwork - the Face of Mary MacKillop.
4 Religious Education News Feast of the Assumption The Assumption of Mary celebrates the special day when God allowed Mary to go to heaven to be with her Son Jesus. We celebrate this on the 15 August. We wonder why God chose to take Mary body and soul into heaven? Maybe because she said Yes to God when she was asked to become Jesus' Mother. Maybe because she wanted to be in Heaven with her Son and be the Mother of us all in Heaven. Catholic Education Mass Thank you to all who came to Mass last Saturday and represented our school at the Catholic Education Mass. Supper was enjoyed afterwards and the sausage rolls were extremely popular. Jubilee Mass This Friday Mrs Jenkinson, Mrs Starr and some Year 6 students will carefully jump into a taxi, buckle up safely and drive to St Joseph s Cathedral for a special mass. At this Mass Bishop Michael will be recognised by other priests because he has dedicated 40 years of his life to being a priest. Amazing! Prayer Assembly Please come along and enjoy as Year 1E and Mrs Egan lead prayer on Friday 10 August at 8.35am in the Hall. Year 1M and Mrs Moon will lead prayer the following week on the 17 August at 8.35am in the Hall. Reported by Year 2 S & Year 2 G Curriculum News
5 Curriculum News Under 8 s Day was fun and interactive for children eight years of age and under. Year Five were very excited to assist setting up as well. There were a variety of jobs, for example bubble blowing, photographers, assisting groups, etc. We had a great time learning how to lead younger children and try and maintain their focus, even though the activities were all fun. As future leaders, this helped us learn and understand how important it is to always use easy to understand instructions and model the correct way to behave and communicate with others. The morning was entertaining! Dakota and Rori (Year 5)
