1 Newsletter No June 2018 Humility Yesterday my six year old nephew slaughtered me at Connect 4, a type of draughts game. It was fun for the family watching, the nephew certainly enjoyed himself, especially when he beat me in the smallest number of moves and I didn t see it coming. I promised him I would beat him by Wednesday and the little smirk on his face said, that wasn t happening. Just a nice Sunday afternoon with the family? Actually it was an exercise in humility. Too often we think of humility as putting oneself down. Is it really? Jesus said: Come to me for I am meek and humble of heart and while he took insults from people, he knew his true value and he did not demean himself. If we look at the words that come from the same background as humility, we can see how this virtue can have a positive influence in our lives. Humus, the top layer of soil, and humour come from the same roots. The first aspect of being humble is to be down to earth, capable of entering into the simple ordinary events of life and finding richness there. And not only richness, humour as well. Humour means we don t take ourselves, or life for that matter, too seriously. Good humour gives us the ability to see situations from different points of view. So Sunday afternoon playing games with a child was a down to earth activity. It gave all of us joy and let us relax into each other s company. What more could God desire in our lives at that point in time. I will beat my nephew in at least one game on Wednesday. I have my strategy. I make awesome Rocky Road, a weakness of his. It will sit alongside the board and when he loses, he wins. Loving Father, give me the humility to enjoy being with my child/ren in the simple events of life and the light-heartedness to enjoy the humour that comes along. I ask this in Jesus name confident that you will hear me.

2 From the Principal NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC week generally falls over the June/July school holidays. St Joseph s Wandal will begin NAIDOC week celebrations on Friday, 29 June when we welcome Darumbal elder Wade Mann. Wade will spend the day visiting each class to share his knowledge and experience of Darumbal history, indigenous storytelling and dance. Thank you - to the many families who joined us to celebrate our second Youth Mass of the year at St Joseph s Cathedral on Sunday morning. It was a lovely Eucharistic Celebration and our children did a superb job participating in the Mass. Congratulations- to all students who participated in our Athletics Carnival at Emmaus College today. We were very proud of the sportsmanship and perseverance that we witnessed. My thanks to all of the parents and staff who volunteered their time in one way or another to ensure the carnival was a success. Vacation Care Our Outside School Hours Care staff have been busily preparing some wonderful experiences for our students for the next lot of Vacation Care. If you are wishing to book your child in Vacation Care please do so as soon as possible so that numbers can be finalised. Please see the roster attached with today s newsletter for further details. Year Five Visit to TCC - Our Year Five Students will be travelling to TCC next Thursday to see first-hand what High School is all about. Students will take part in Hospitality/Catering, Information Technology, Manual Arts, Drama, Art and Science lessons. Students are reminded to bring their school hat, a water bottle and lunch. Outstanding School Fee Accounts It would be appreciated if any outstanding accounts could be finalised before the end of the term. If your payment commitment cannot be met, please make an appointment to see me. Kellie APRE News Mark 4:26-34 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark The mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds, grows into the biggest shrub of all. Jesus said to the crowds, This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time; he starts to reap because the harvest has come. He also said, What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade. Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone. 4 APC News Writing: The term might be coming to a close, but everyone at St Joseph s Wandal is still working really hard! Our Prep to Three children have been lucky enough to be part of a writing project with other Rockhampton schools. Our Years Four to Six students of course are also working hard on writing. Here are a few samples. The little girl skipped along, knowing she was safe. Suddenly a great, greyish-blue, clumsy, three-eyed, purple-horned beast stumbled out from the shadow of a tree. It roared until its throat was sore. Fortunately the little girl got away from her nightmare! Elsie, Year 2 Under my bed is a whole other world. There are broken toys and rubbish everywhere. Sometimes my lego gets lost in all the dust. My bed is just as disorganised. At the moment it s getting taken over by all my stuffed animals and sometimes I have to push them off my bed just to have some room. Even though my room is very messy, I have a small corner just for my most prized possession in the world - my toy koala. She s grey and very soft and I always treat her as if she were real. Acacia, Year Five When you enter my room, you first notice the bed which you are about to hit. Then, when you bang your toe on the vacuum cleaner under my bed, (and hop in circles while holding your toe), you notice a cardboard box, my brother s bed, and the racks we use as a cupboard. When you walk around the bed, you might fall over the high number of blue and orange Nerf darts which litter the floor. When you lean against the wall (as you are getting dizzy from all the hopping in circles), you will notice the rough texture of it. I feel at home when I m in my room, because A) It s where I can rest and B)I ve had some good Nerf wars against my parents, while hiding in my room.
