1 Newsletter Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School Issue 8 Welcome back! 2nd November 2018 We hope that you and your child had an enjoyable half term and are looking forward to the half-term ahead. There are many school events happening between now and December which we look forward to welcoming you into school for, including our Parent s consultation meetings (week beginning 19th November) and the range of Christmas events that we have planned. Please remember that all of our events can be found on the school calendar page on olol.co.uk or via the calendar picture below. Computing at St. Thomas More We are pleased to inform you about an exciting new venture that Our Lady Of Lourdes are working on with St. Thomas More. From this half term onwards, all children in KS2 will have the opportunity to have their computing lessons in the specialist computing suites at St. Thomas More on a fortnightly basis. This allows our children at OLOL to have regular access to excellent resources and we are very excited about working so closely with another school in the Assisi Catholic Trust. Mr Jackson and Mrs Harding (Computing Subject Leaders) Poppies and Remembrance We will be selling poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion. Children can bring in a donation if they wish to get a poppy. Although Armistice Day falls on Sunday this year, we will be having assemblies and remembrance activities across all of next week at school which will fit into our Love One Another Month (of which there are more details about in this newsletter). Tel: office@ourladyoflourdes.southend.sch.uk School Website Twitter Facebook:

3 Our School Mission Statement Our Mission Statement should reflect the purpose and aim of our school. It should be a simple sentence or string of sentences that we should all know and be able to remember. Because our school is dedicated to Our Lady, our mission should reflect that we have chosen her as an important role model for us. We should aim to be like Mary in how we behave and how we follow Jesus. With this in mind, I have composed a Mission Statement. Can you talk about it and decide whether it describes what we should do? Can you improve it? Loving like Mary Serving like Mary Learning like Mary Believing like Mary LOVING - Mary was loving when the hosts ran out of wine at the wedding - His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. LEARNING - Mary learnt about her son when he was found talking to the teachers in the temple - Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. SERVING - Mary agreed to serve when she agreed to carry Jesus in her womb - I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her. BELIEVING - Mary s belief in God is proclaimed by her cousin Elizabeth when Mary comes to visit - Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her! If you have any comments or suggestions we would love to hear from you. Please send these in to office@ourladyoflourdes.southend.sch.uk
4 November is Love one another month. During the month of November as a school we want to focus on our message of loving one another. Our message is you do not have to like everyone, but Christ told us we have to love everyone and loving means not wanting to cause anyone any harm. This first week back we have started to emphasise this message. The programme of assemblies are below so that you are informed about all the areas we will cover: Equality not the same but fair Bullying: Why not? Who to talk to if you re not feeling safe. Friendship What makes a good friend? Remembrance Cyber Bullying In order to help us, it would be good if you could re-iterate our message at home. We have clearly defined for the children that bullying is an on purpose plan to cause hurt or upset, that it is usually repeated and that there is an imbalance of power. We all have the potential to be horrible, and children may be horrible to each other; this is not right but is not bullying. In either case pupils should say Stop it I don t like it! and walk away, then tell an adult. In our classrooms there are worry boxes for any children who have concerns. Ambassadors will be made easily recognisable in the playground if children want to talk to a friendly Year 6 who will then pass the message onto an adult. We are asking the children in KS2 to complete a survey about name calling and behaviour in school. I hope this will help us work together to teach children to stop being unkind. Being horrible to one another is something that does happen. We are particularly keen to stop name calling or insults because of the way we look or because we are using terms that are offensive to some people in our community. We ask parents of older children to continue to be vigilant for any messages children may receive or send on their phones or computers. I hope that together we can make our school an even happier place. Mr Bragard

During assembly, each class council representative picked an item lucky dip style (please see the list below). Thank you for helping us to teach our children the importance of helping others in our community. Please do not send in alcohol or any food items that contain alcohol. Please bring in your items by the 5th December at the latest. Thank you in advance for your continued support! Mrs Watts RM Christmas Crackers Superstars!
