1 NEWSLETTER 16th March 2018 INFANTS: STAR OF THE WEEK Reception Xavier Coley Xavier has lovely manners and is now using his sound knowledge in his reading. He is also progressing well with his writing. Infant 1 Jayden Ainscough Jayden is trying really hard to improve his handwriting. He is also making a great effort to learn all his lines for the upcoming Easter production. Infant 2 Lewis Walker Lewis has been working hard to improve his spelling. He scored full marks in his recent spelling tests! Keep practising Lewis. JUNIORS: Prep 1 James Fox James has been a super star at bus stop method division reaching some really difficult extension activities with remainders. Keep it up James! Prep 2 Well done to all of Prep 2 for what was a a fantastic assembly. A lot of practice and hard work paid off. I hope you all had fun and enjoy Saint Patrick s Day on Saturday!

2 MORE STARS OF THE WEEK Prep 3 A Louis Hartigan For working very hard to improve the quality of his answers in Comprehension Well done Louis! Prep 3 Alpha William Insley William listened really well during our Islam lessons and recorded super information about Muslims and their beliefs. Prep 4 A Luke Kelly Luke stepped in at the last moment to take over another boy s part in the performance of This is the Place on Monday. Well done, Luke! Prep 4 Alpha Oliver Hines For his confident contribution in the Drama group s performance of the poem This is the Place. Very well done. Oliver!

3 PREP 4 CAKE SALE On Monday 19th March the boys in Prep 4 will hold a cake sale to raise money to support our Lenten appeal. Boys in Prep 4 will bring in home made cakes to sell during the day and all other boys are invited to bring a maximum on 1 to spend at the cake stall. DAY OF DIVINE MERCY This special celebration will be held on Sunday 8th April 2018 at Holy Angels Church, Hale Barns. The Church will be open from 1.30pm and Confessions will be from 2.00pm onwards. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 2.30pm until 3.20pm and the Novena Chaplet, and Promises will be read at 3.00pm. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated at 3.30pm and there will be refreshments after Mass. In addition, you may wish to recite the 9-day Novena prayers/ chaplet commencing on Good Friday. Novena prayers leaflets are available at the back of church. Edmund Rice Prayer Booklet An Edmund Rice Prayer Pack will be assigned to your son as the class explores the life of Blessed Edmund Rice. Edmund Rice is the founder of the Christian Brothers Schools, this booklet is designed to allow your son to find out about the Story of Blessed Edmund Rice and the ethos of an Edmund Rice education. Your son will enjoy reading about his inspirational story, he will see the symbolism behind the icons and he should reflect on how we should live like Blessed Edmund Rice. This is pack is meant to be a fun, creative way to learn about his life. The Prayer Book Activities that you may wish to complete include: 1. Reading the booklet to your child and talking about the meaning of the icons 2. You can write a prayer about one of these icons or your son could draw their own picture of an icon 3. Your son could complete the jigsaw 4. You could discuss the importance of showing generosity and kindness to others and you could write a prayer 5. You and your son could light the candle and have some quiet reflection time This task is an open ended task and it is at your own discretion how much you want to complete in the prayer book. It is designed to encourage family time and a time to reflect on the life of Edmund Rice. We hope that it is an enjoyable experience and your son benefits from this activity. 4 Pre-Prep boys enjoyed finding the caterpillar in their Science experiment this week. Reception boys had fun blowing bubbles.

5 Nicholas brought in fresh free-range eggs from his hens and Infant 2 had fun finding out which eggs were fertilised using torches!

6 Prep 1 were set a science week challenge, they had to make a boat out of paper. The boat which could hold the most weight was the winner. All the boys worked really well as a team and used scientific language to explain the reasons for their boat design. Here are the results: Team Weight held by boat (grams Team Burger 35 Team Jeff 240 Team Titanic 335 Team Tank 271 Team Asteroid 156 The Bandits 213 Ironically Team Titanic won! Well done Sem and Daniel!

7 Prep 3 s Paper Rope Challenge was a really tricky task this year, but great fun and team work was had by all!

8 Using only sheets of scrap A4 paper and sellotape, Prep 4 had great fun constructing the tallest freestanding structure that would support a golf ball. Well done boys!

9 The boys had a fantastic Saint Patrick s Day Assembly! They continued their Irish celebrations by playing Gaelic football and Hurling in the afternoon. They also really enjoyed Ceilidh dancing and listening to traditional Irish music. The boys learned a lot about Irish culture and traditions, they performed wonderfully in assembly displaying a wide collection of talents and they did the Irish proud! A big thank you to all the parents for supporting your son learning in their lines. Thank you for the Irish flag cake and to the Mums who served the teas and coffees. Go raibh maith agat! Wishing you all a Happy Saint Patrick s Day this Saturday!

10 Last Friday the boys had a Multifaith Assembly. They discussed all they had learned about their new religion of study. They outlined some similarities and differences between Catholicism and their religion of study. The boys understand that our British values teach us to always have respect and tolerance. We also understand that our differences should be celebrated and the world is a more interesting place when we embrace our differences. They really enjoyed Multifaith Week and now have a better understanding of different religions.

11 SAPA News Thank you so much to everyone who came to our meeting on Monday. And thank you to everyone who came to the Fashion Show last Friday. So many of you came to show your support, and we raised over 700 for the College and Preparatory School. We hope you had a really enjoyable evening, and love the clothes you took home. Maybe you could show them off at the Summer Party we are holding in June! Summer Party Friday 15 June 7.30pm Please make sure this date is in your diary. We are having a party at Bowdon Rugby Union Football Club. There will be a hog roast and BBQ (with veggie options), licensed bar and dancing until the early hours. Tickets are only 20 and will be going on sale after the Easter holidays. Places will be limited so you ll need to buy your tickets early.
