3 Celebrate Father Joe! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Living History Since this is the 70 th Anniversary of Saint Bernard s Parish, I ve been invited to give this month s presentation at the Levittown Historical Society on June 18 th. The challenge is that I ve only been here for the past five years of the parish s life. So, I m looking for a few long-time parishioners to join me in preparing for and presenting at the Historical Society meeting. If you ve got some good reminiscences that you d be willing to share about the earlier days of the parish, please give me a call at ext 130 or me at shepherd@stbernardchurch.org so we can get together for a brief conversation. Making History We re continuing to develop our parish and this time we re planning on renewing the parish campus including taking the leaking tower down, erecting a steeple, building a larger lobby and renovating the parking lot. See page 11 for a way our local high school students are getting involved. Legend has it that Father Joe s favorite food are chocolate covered doughnuts. But truth be told, as we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus (Corpus Christi) and his silver anniversary as a priest, we know that Father Joe s favorite food really is Jesus. Ever since he was a little boy, he has received the Eucharist and 25 years ago, Bishop John McGann ordained him a priest so that he could provide the Body and Blood of Jesus for the rest of us! For two and a half decades Father Joe has been serving God s people in parishes on Long Island including Saint Raphael s in East Meadow, Maria Regina in Seaford, Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park, and for the past five years here at Saint Bernard s. Wherever I go I usually bump into people who ask, How s Father Joe? as they fondly remember him from when he celebrated their wedding or consoled them (and cheered them a bit) at a loved one s funeral. Some things haven t changed over the years...he still gives out quarters when someone answers a question correctly. And he regularly proclaims, You re gonna be a priest, right? to a young person who seems particularly astute. And why wouldn t he want to promote this amazing vocation to the next generation? Over these years Father Joe has been privileged to be a part of people s most intimate moments, from baptizing their children, to anointing the sick and dying, to listening to their struggles and forgiving their sins. I certainly feel privileged to serve side by side with this caring and joyful priest who again this day feeds us with Jesus presence, not only in the Eucharist, but in his love for God s people. Happy Anniversary Father Joe! May God bless you throughout many years to come! 3

7 Alpha is coming! Coming Fall 2018 ALPHA It s in Catholic Churches all over the world! Why Alpha? Alpha is a chance for people to grow in their relationship with God. It s a place to learn, to ask questions and share viewpoints about life and faith. About 100 of us will gather for 8 weeks for a free meal, followed by a video to spark discussion, followed by round-table talk. It s for anyone old, young, in-between; churchgoer or not; just beginning the faith journey or further along on the road. It s about taking the next step and making a difference in your life. Where does it come from? It was started in London by Father Nicky Gumbel, an Anglican priest who has an amazing story of how he journeyed from atheist to priest! From there it has spread like wildfire throughout the world to all kinds of churches, including the Roman Catholic Church. It has been promoted by many Catholic bishops and cardinals, including the Pope s own preacher. See below for their testimonies (including one from a guy you might know), and you can see more video testimonies on the Alpha Catholic website: endorsements. Alpha can spark a deeper level of faith and a richer personal relationship with Jesus Christ and what it means to be His disciple. Our faith can grow dormant and our church practice routine. There are moments when we sense a need for more and Alpha might meet that need. But Alpha is also meant to reach the un-churched. Those who have found Alpha a rich opportunity to deepen faith can be the means of touching the hearts of family members and friends and invite them to share in the Alpha experience. If you are on the fence about Alpha, come the first night, take the leap of faith. You won t crash land. You ll come to a beautiful place of faith. Father Jerry Ringenback, Good Shepherd, Holbrook Many parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit have found Alpha a great tool for helping men and women hear the initial proclamation of the Gospel. I am pleased that our use of Alpha with the Archdiocesan staff has invited a recommitment to the basic truths of the Gospel. Archbishop Allen Vigneron "Many of our Catholic parishioners have benefited from Alpha by way of its building on their initial interest in the Church,... or for others, a renewal of their desire to more deeply understand and live their Catholic faith." Cardinal Sean O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston Archiocese of Detroit Alpha is in Catholic Churches worldwide. Soon, it s here! Starts 9/21/18 7

8 Father Jerry Ringenback is retiring! As of June 27, our former pastor Father Jerry will officially be a retired priest! 9 The Beautiful Hands of a Priest We need them in life's early morning, we need them again at its close; We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, we seek it while tasting life's woes. When we come to this world we are sinful, the greatest as well as the least. And the hands that make us pure as angels are the beautiful hands of a priest. At the altar each day we behold them, And the hands of a king on his throne Are not equal to them in their greatness their dignity stands all alone. For there in the stillness of morning the sun has emerged from the east, There God rests between the pure fingers of the beautiful hands of a priest. When we are tempted and wander to pathways of shame and sin 'Tis the hand of a priest that absolve us. Not once but again and again. And when we are taking life's partner other hands may prepare us a feast But the hands that will bless and unite us, are the beautiful hands of a priest. God bless them and keep them all holy, for the Host which their fingers caress, What can a poor sinner do better than to ask Him who chose them to bless When the hour of death comes upon us may our courage and strength be increased. By seeing raised over us in anointing the beautiful hands of a priest! 9

10 Liturgy corner Readings for June 3, 2018 June 10, 2018 SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (Corpus Christi) his Eucharistic day, observed with such solemnity T throughout the world, began in a quiet Belgian convent in the thirteenth century, with the vision of a holy nun, St. Juliana. In her vision, she saw the moon, full and bright. It was glorious, except that one part of its disk was in shadow. The meaning of the vision was then revealed to her: the moon represented the liturgical year; the shadow, a missing feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Juliana spoke to her confessor about what she had seen. Amazingly, within thirty-five years, Pope Urban IV had established the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, in the Church s universal calendar. Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday, June 8. One of the most beloved aspects of our Catholic tradition is our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In honoring the Sacred Heart, we are honoring the compassion and love of Christ: his human heart, moved with pity for his flock, his divine heart, pierced for the sins of his people. From the heart of Christ, pierced by the soldier s lance, blood and water poured out, the well-spring of the Church s Sacraments. Sourcebook 2018 Sunday, June 3. 11 Total Raised to Date $893,147 Percentage of Minimum Goal 51% Giving Up to Give We ve been asking parishioners to suggest things they could give up in order to give to our Let s Build Campaign. At first it might seem that people don t have enough to make a significant gift to our project of renovating the parish campus, when people save a little here and there in order to make a multi-year pledge, a significant gift is really possible. Here are some ideas we received this week -- Forego sipping the 2nd glass of wine/cocktail at dinner $12 (x once a week) = $625 a year x 5 years = $3, Manicure every 2 weeks = $40 = $960 a year x 5 years = $ Number of Pledges 239 Average Gift $3,700 The Lobby Competition MacArthur High School and Division Ave High School recently faced off in the varsity baseball playoffs. Congratulations to both teams for a great season. But the cross town competition continues in the area of architecture as students in the architecture class in each school have been developing ideas for the new lobby of Saint Bernard s Church. Come see their work in the gym after all the Masses next weekend. Team MacArthur "Skipping the guac" at Chipotle (it's a joke that it's a luxury of sorts to be able to afford guacamole with your burrito bowl) = $1.80 (x once a week) = $95 x 5 years = $ Netflix = $10.99 a month = $130 a year x 5 years =$ 650 TOTAL PLEDGE: $9,050 Getting us to our goal - Priceless! Got some ideas of your own? Please send them in. And please send in your pledge form this week. Team Division 11

Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion In 1954 an eleven-year-old boy boards a ship in Ceylon bound for England. At mealtimes he is seated at the "cat's table" - as far from the Captain's Table as can be - with a ragtag group of "insignificant" adults and two other boys. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, into the Mediterranean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another. A spellbinding story about the magical, often forbidden, discoveries of childhood and a lifelong journey that begins unexpectedly with a spectacular sea voyage. Join your fellow parishioners on Wednesday June 6 th at 10am in the St. Bernard Parish Center for an informal discussion of Michael Ondaatje s The Cat s Table.
