3 Here Comes Everyone! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Saint Joseph Celebration This coming Monday, March 19 th, is the Feast of Saint Joseph. Of course we ll be celebrating this at the 8am Mass and we ll be offering extra prayers in honor of the Sisters of Saint Joseph who live in our convent. Right after Mass we ll go to the Parish Center where we ll dedicate the meeting room which until now was called the Brown Room to Saint Joseph. It will now be called The Saint Joseph Room. Come join us if you can. Palm Sunday The missal calls for the Palm Sunday Masses to start with an outdoor procession. We can t do this in a timely manner at all the Masses but we ll follow our past year s tradition of starting the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass with the blessing and procession with palms outdoors and the Family Mass will start at 8:45 am with the outdoor blessing and procession. Come early, dress warmly. Get ready to start this great celebration of Holy week. Can you remember the last time you hosted a big party at your home? Maybe it was Christmas or Thanksgiving. Maybe it was a wedding or baby shower. Perhaps a Christening party. Or a St. Patrick s Day party this weekend! In any case you probably had to borrow some extra chairs and rearrange the furniture so everyone could fit. And I ll bet you didn t get angry at all the people who showed up. In fact, you rejoiced then, and probably bragged the next day to your friends and co-workers about how many people you hosted. That s the kind of happiness I feel on Palm Sunday and Easter when lots and lots of people come to worship God together. Of course I m glad to see you, as usual, but I m really thrilled to see who else shows up. We have a big parish family and we re more complete when we unite ourselves on these holy days. Sometimes I suspect there are some among us who don t share this joy. They grumble to me that they can t sit where they usually do. I want to say (but politeness prevents me), Really? You ve fallen for the devil s favorite trick: make people dislike each other because they can t sit where they d like to? Jesus not proud of us. All year long some people grumble about why people don t come to church each week and when they finally get their wish, they re horrified that they have to sit in a new seat because another person who wants to worship God got there too. Well if you ve been so infected by the devil, don t worry. Today s gospel (John 12:20-33) might inspire you. Jesus says, Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. In other words, we need to let go of our own possessiveness in order to grow. Maybe there are two more things to give up this Lent -- our seats and our attitudes about giving up our seats. (The attitude feels more like giving in than freely giving up. ) I wonder about one more thing. While I can t yet preside at Mass because of my knee, I could sit in a pew this weekend. If I came to your seat, would you move in and let me sit at the end or would you get up to let me sit in the middle? And would you do anything different if it wasn t me who appeared at your row? 3

4 Parish News Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion In the award-winning The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer. Join your fellow parishioners on Wednesday March 21 at 10 AM in the St. Bernard Parish Center for an informal discussion of this best-selling novel which recently became a major motion picture. 10 Liturgy Corner Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 First Reading: After calling the people back to the Lord, Jeremiah shifts his tone and offers a message of hope. In contrast to the rooting up and tearing down of the first chapter, he now speaks of building. God is not only offering a renewed covenant but a new covenant written on the hearts. The passage is stylistically lie Hose, using many of the same words. Responsorial Psalm 51: This great hymn of repentance reminds us that a return to God is possible. Crying out for forgiveness, and affirming the great compassion of God, the psalmist asks God to create within him a clean heart, a true transformation of his entire person. God is both faithful and gracious, willing to restore to wholeness those who ask for help. Second Reading: To obey is one thing; to obey to the point of death is obedience of an almost unfathomable magnitude. In this chapter, the writer compares Christ to the high priest Melchizedek. The passage contrasts the total humanity of Christ with his divinity, through which eternal salvation is achieved for all humankind. Gospel: Jesus has entered Jerusalem in jubilant glory, welcomed as a king. Now he must convey to his companions the destiny he walks. Now the time has come, and it is to death that he must travel. The path to true eternal life is going to involve giving up earthly life. The agricultural metaphor of the seed that dies in order to produce fruit; harvest cannot be achieved without it. Notice that the conversion of the Greeks is mentioned at the outset. This message comes not only to the Jews, but to all people. A powerful voice underscores the truth of what Jesus is saying, but not all can hear it correctly. SAINT OF THE WEEK Monday, March 19. Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Joseph (first century) was an honorable and just man who took the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as his wife. While engaged to Mary, Joseph found out that she was pregnant, but he knew he was not the father. After an angel appeared to him in a dream, in which he was told that the child was from the Holy Spirit, he courageously moved forward, and still planned to marry his beloved Mary and protect the soon-to-be Messiah. St. Joseph, a carpenter by trade, appears at various points in the four Gospel accounts, including Luke s genealogy, the infancy narratives, and the flight into Egypt. Although he disappears from the Gospel after Jesus early years, he continues to be a source of inspiration and veneration for many. The Ride Home This feature is for families to share their thoughts as they travel to and from Church. Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 Gospel: John 12:20-33 Adults: In what ways have I sacrificed my own desires to be of help to others? Children: How have I given something up to help my family, a classmate, or a friend? 10

Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics For Freedom of Religion- CFFR Canada's Catholic bishops say the government's new Canada Summer Jobs grant policy "conflicts directly with the right to freedom of religion and conscience..." This new policy requires that employers sign a form supporting abortion and transgender "rights" in order to receive student summer job grants, thus restricting the voices of faith communities in Canada and limiting their participation in the public square. Non-profit groups, small businesses, and private sector employers can apply for funding for wage subsidies for students ages However, some in government did not want pro-life groups receiving any grants, so this year they added the new requirement that pro-life individuals and businesses cannot, in good conscience, sign. "Christians must beware of a polite persecution that is cloaked in a disguise of culture, modernity, and progress." Pope Francis Daily readings can be found online at: Sunday, April 15.
