3 Do Over E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Giving Up For Lent By now you ve probably heard that I m giving up my left knee for Lent -- that is, I m getting it replaced. (You might have received an if the parish has an updated for you. If not, go to our website and update your info.) I m posting my progress each day at the parish website and I thank everyone for their prayers. Obviously I won t be around for the next few weeks so I hope everyone will behave, that you ll come to church each weekend and that you ll refrain from dying while I m gone. I m grateful to the priests who are covering for me at Mass and the other sacraments. Thanks especially to Bishop Murphy who ll be visiting on most Sundays in Lent to celebrate Mass with us. Know that I ll be offering up any pain and discomfort for my fellow Bernardians who are also going through struggles in their lives in these days ahead. Generations after a great flood, the Israelites were still struggling with the question of why bad things happened in the world. Those who were editing the ancient stories into the bible we know today had a simple theory: when you do what God wants, you get blessings. When you break God s covenant, you get punishment. So the story of the great flood is told in those terms. Everyone on earth, except Noah and his family, did evil in God s eyes and so only Noah and his family are saved. (Although it strikes me as less than rewarding to live on a large boat with all those animals.) Still, the story editors somehow knew that this simple view wasn t quite right. We know today that it s absolutely not true that God hurls natural disasters toward us because of divine displeasure. (Witness divine forgiveness at the crucifixion of Jesus.) So although our old testament ancestors still had a basic belief that God s relationship with the world was based on our behavior and attitudes, deep down they realized that this wasn t a complete view. This Sunday we hear the end of the flood story (Genesis 9:8-15) where God puts a rainbow in the sky as a sign that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings. So if somehow you were brought up with the image of a God who s going to get you someday, this Lent is a time to give that up. God certainly is displeased with our unloving actions and speech. But God is not hurling floods (or cancer or aids or the flu or any other kind of malady) against us. Rather God calls us to change the not-so-loving parts of our lives. We can use the Noah and the Flood story to imagine God washing away our sins and failings and letting us start again. But this is not a punishing act. Rather it s a cleansing act filled with hope. Jesus is led into the desert by the Holy Spirit to pray and he spends 40 days figuring out his Father s will for him as he is about to begin his ministry among the people. Let s take the 40 days of Lent that are offered to us to be purified of images of God that are actually preventing us from a real and deep relationship with the One who loved us into being. In quiet moments of prayer and at Mass and at different Lenten devotions, be as open as Jesus was to an amazing life God wills for us. 3

8 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 18, 2018 First Reading: The drama of the building of the ark, its loading, and the rising of the waters can overshadow what should be the most powerful moment in the story of Noah: The establishment of God s covenant with Noah and his descendants. This promise everlasting is the powerful covenant made with Abraham later in Genesis. The covenant is generated by God, who takes responsibility for its fulfillment, offering a sign of affirmation to humankind (the rainbow). Note the parallels between this account of God s promise and the process of creation in Genesis I. Responsorial Psalm 25: The psalmist calls out to God for help and direction, affirming that they will be provided. Psalm 25 extols God s goodness and ability to lead his people in the way of truth. In many ways, these verses speak to the covenant, calling upon God to both remember his mercy and his promises. Second Reading: The destructive power of water is now contrasted with the life-giving power of water in Peter s letter. In Christ Jesus, suffering is not meaningless but ennobled. The passage includes a creedal element, outlining the Paschal Mystery and its promise. The gift of Baptism is one of liberation for all, not salvation for a few as in the story of Noah. Gospel: In Mark, the beginning of Jesus journey is his experience of forty days in the wilderness. His account is terser than that of Matthew and Luke, which also makes its message quite direct. Jesus has been tested, like the Israelites were tested by the forty years of wandering in the wilderness to the Promised Land and Noah was tested with forty days afloat in the flood waters. Under the protection of God s angels, Jesus has triumphed, proving his readiness for his earthly mission. The number of forty appears in dozens of places in the Bible, usually signifying a test that has been administered and passed. As we enter the forty days of Lent, we can challenge ourselves to embrace the spiritual tests we are facing, transforming them and our selves - as we journey to Easter. Liturgy Corner Feast and Saints of the Week Wednesday, February 21. St. Peter Damian ( ), born to a large Italian family, entered a Camaldolese Benedictine monastery comprising hermit monks who followed an austere life of fasting and prayer. Dedicating himself to the study of Scripture and the Fathers of the Church, he gained a reputation among the hermits as being both a gifted scholar and spiritual guru. St. Peter was a powerful voice of reform in the Church. He was so influential in the Church that Pope Leo XII declared him a Doctor of the Church. Thursday, February 22. Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle. The chair of a bishop, called the cathedra, is the symbol of his foundational ministry to be a teacher of faith to his Church community. What then can we learn from Peter, the rock of our Church? His extraordinary confession of faith in this passage teaches us courage to confess truth, even if it may sound far-fetched by everyday standards. Peter listened to the Spirit of God in his heart and proclaimed Jesus as Christ, Son of the living God. Since the actual date of Peter s death was unknown, it came to be remembered on February 22, eventually becoming a celebration of his taking over the pastoral responsibility of the Church of Rome. Friday, February 23. St. Polycarp, an esteemed Christian leader, lived during the first half of the second century and was a friend to many who personally knew Jesus. He converted to the Christian faith under the influence of St. John the Evangelist. He fought many of the Gnostic heresies that were beginning to overtake the early Church. The Romans tried to burn Polycarp at the stake (when he was in his late 80 s) but, when he survived that, they finally stabbed him to death with a dagger. Sourcebook
