3 Epistle Reading St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12. Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a sister as wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? 11 Father Chris's Departure & Arrival of the New Proistamenos Father Chris s last day is TODAY, Sunday, August 20, We are having a reception in the Community Center after Divine Liturgy. (See previous page) As to the selection and arrival of the new Proistamenos, Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver has assured that he will do his best to identify a new priest for the parish who will be most faithful and dedicated to the parish and its parishioners. The new Proistamenos has not yet been identified or selected. Chris Canellos and I will serve as liaisons to assist with the communication to and from the Metropolis throughout the process. We will provide additional updates as information is obtained and confirmed with the Metropolis. In the meantime, please contact Chris Canellos or me should you have any questions or concerns and we will share them with the Metropolis. Please do not contact the Metropolis directly. 16 A Short History of Our Stewardship Program by Tom Fox Stewardship: what in the world is stewardship? Being one of a few that have been a member of all three of our churches in Dallas, I have seen Holy Trinity grow. The first church, in South Dallas, was a frame building with no air conditioning and ceiling fans. The parsonage next door was where Father Poulakidis and his family lived. Behind his home was the Greek / Catechetical school building. Next to the parsonage was a big yard where we played touch football. Fun times! We were a very small parish with just a few families, so when expenses got overwhelming, the Parish Council would go around and ask for donations from our various restauranteurs to pay our priest! The Archdiocese charged each church member dekatholarion ($10) to pay our bishops, etc. As our membership outgrew this facility, a big fundraiser was held to buy the property at Swiss and Apple. I remember our family, as well as others, going by to check on the construction. In order to sustain our church with continued donations, the Envelope System was put in place. The Catechetical school children would put in their nickels and dimes and the adults were expected to put quarters or more. Our big beautiful church was nice but more expensive to maintain, therefore, donations had to increase. We were growing! The Envelope System lasted many years. The community was asked to increase their 25 cents to a minimum of 50 cents! We grew again! The Catechetical school area was much too small and the church was always too crowded. A good problem to have! The good Lord directed us to our current location. Remarkably, the Dallas Theological Seminary wanted our property and Restland wanted the St. Barbara Church location on Abrams so we were able to purchase our current property at Hillcrest and Alpha. With generous donations from our community, this magnificent structure is now being completed with iconography, little by little. We are all so proud of our church facility. Many people who visit us during the Festival make many positive comments about our cathedral. It is amazing to look back at where we started, a small frame church without air conditioning and only one priest, to where we are now! We should be proud of ourselves! We MUST continue our financial support as our needs continue to grow and as our Parish grows. We can meet our goal to be financially sustained mainly through our stewardship as well as candles, and diskos donations! God Bless Our Parish, Tom L. Fox
