3 Epistle Reading Acts of the Apostles 19:1-8. In those days, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve of them in all. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God. 7 SCHOOL KITS FOR THE CHILDREN OF GREECE Many school children in Greece are unable to fully participate in their studies in school due to the need for basic school supplies. To fill this need, IOCC has asked our youth to provide the necessary supplies for the children. The Youth of the Catechetical School, Greek School and Holy Trinity Academy have set a goal to prepare 250 school kits. The project begins TODAY, Sunday, January 7 th, and goes through Sunday, February 4 th. The youth will receive Ziploc bags with an insert describing the project as well as the list of supplies. 10 It s that time of year again! The flu is flyin. Many of us are just now taking the time to consider an annual flu shot for protection against whatever particular strain of flu bug is going around. Did you get your shot? We don t have time to be sick, right? We want to increase our immunities, protect ourselves from physical illness, and keep on keeping on about our daily routines. Sometimes I think our faith is like that too. Wouldn t it be great if someone could culture a faith vaccine that would increase our faith, protect us from evil, suffering, and despair, AND transform us into super Christians, a bold new strain of effective and efficient disciples who can leap tall crosses in a single bound while avoiding all commitment and controversy in the process? Yeah, right. Our parish is blessed with many wonderful people. We want to increase our faith. We want to support our Holy Trinity Parish, see worship attendance and offerings grow, have a bunch of programs available to nurture and serve all demographic segments of the parish. Yes, we want to be good stewards, but we d really like to have all of this on our terms with our desired level of commitment, investment, and absence of conflict. I wish it were that simple. We like to be a part of the winning team, but again we like to have some control over the rules of the game. The first century followers of Jesus were Flu Shots Anyone? not all that different. They were a mixed bag of sacrifice and expectation, of bumbling and goodness, and of faith and folly. Yet, somehow they kept on following Christ. Is our parish much different? How did we do in 2017? Well Ask yourself, Did I complete my 2017 Pledge before the year ended? Did I contribute on a regular basis throughout the year, or wait for a letter or call, pleading for me to complete my pledge? Did I contribute my time, talent and treasure to my fullest, or did I just let the others carry the load? Your answers will tell you how your church did this year. For 2018, the new Stewardship Pledge cards are going out and you should receive one shortly. Please take a minute to fill out a new card for A little like that flu shot, the process may poke you as you consider your pledge, but it is so necessary for the health of your Church. You see, your church doesn t have time to be sick either! Please prayerfully consider your 2018 pledge. Recall our goal to fund our parish completely through stewardship. Please do your part by increasing your 2018 pledge. We would like to have all of the 2018 pledge cards completed and returned to the church office before the end of January. 12 This is a scholarship opportunity that recognizes Greek American college students (undergraduate level). Each year, The Hellenic Foundation awards up to 20 scholarships of $10,000 each to deserving students based on academic achievement and financial need. Two of these scholarships are awarded in honor of Georgia Mitchell, a longtime church musician from the Metropolis of Chicago. In addition, another 20 scholarships of $2500 each are awarded based solely on academic achievement. Go to the website for some information about the criteria and application process.
