3 Epistle Reading St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 4:22-27 Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married." 3

4 Gospel Reading Luke 5:1-11 At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. 8 Holy Trinity Adult Bible Study The Gospel According the St. John We all long for a life that is pleasing to God. But how do we fill the darkness of our souls with the Light of Christ? How can we quench our thirst with the living waters from a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life? In our study of The Gospel According to St. John, you will experience an opportunity to establish or renew your faith in the One who offers true meaning, true belonging and true life. Among the four living creatures of the Apocalypse, the Gospel according to John has most often been identified with the eagle. St. Augustine likens John to an eagle hovering among Christ s sayings of the more sublime order and in no way descending to earth but on rare occasions. The eagle symbolizes a Gospel so sublime that, as John Chrysostom says, if people actually had the capacity to receive and retain these words, they could no longer exist as mere mortals or remain on the earth. 10 Euphrosyne of Alexandria Celebrated on September 25 St Euphrosyne of Alexandria was born at the beginning of the fifth century in the city of Alexandria. She was the only child in her family of famous and rich parents. Since her mother died early, she was raised by her father, Paphnoutios, a deeply believing and pious Christian. He frequented a monastery, the Abbott of which was his spiritual guide. When Euphrosyne turned eighteen, her father wanted her to marry. He went to the monastery to his spiritual guide to receive his blessing for the planned wedding of his daughter. The Abbott conversed with the daughter and gave her his blessing, but she yearned for monastic life. She secretly accepted tonsure from a wandering monk, left her father s house, and decided to enter a monastery in order to lead her life in solitude and prayer. She feared, however, that in a women s monastery her father would find her. Calling herself the eunuch Smaragdos, she went to the very same men s monastery, which she had visited with her father since childhood. The monks did not recognize St Euphrosyne dressed in men s garb, and so they accepted her into the monastery. Here in a solitary cell, she spent 38 years in works, fasting and prayer, and attained a high level of spiritual accomplishment. Her father grieved over the loss of his beloved daughter and more than once, on the advice of the Abbott, he conversed with the monk Smaragdos, revealing his grief and receiving spiritual comfort. Before her death, the nun Euphrosyne revealed her secret to her grieving father and asked that no one but he should prepare her body for burial. Having buried his daughter, Paphnutios distributed all his wealth to both the poor and to the monastery, and then he accepted monasticism. For ten years right up to his own death, he laboured in the cell of his daughter. 10

13 Introducing Laura Groome as HTOGC s newest Administrative Assistant! She began working as a member of our team on September 6 th, Laura has many years of administrative experience working in positions such as an Executive Assistant, Cash Accounts Specialist, Administrative Technician and a Human Resources director at a non-profit organization. Her personal philosophy has always been to be constantly learning and open to new ideas, to give her very best effort to the company she works for and to treat others with kindness and respect. Laura arrived in Texas in 1999 when she came with her family from Simon s Town, South Africa. She loves to work outside the home but considers her best job position as Mother to 3 grown kids.stephanie recently graduated from university and is married to a Navy sailor, Daniel who is married to a hometown Texas girl and is training to be a U.S. Marine Corps pilot and Kirby who is finishing her degree at Tarleton State and works in Fort Worth. In addition, a first grandbaby is making it s debut in March of 2019! They are all her proudest achievements! Laura lives in Fort Worth with her daughter, Kirby. When you get some time please stop by the office and say HI and welcome Laura to the Holy Trinity family. She is a wonderful addition to our office staff. 13

17 Philotimo Scholarship Competition Washington, DC, Tuesday, September 4, 2018: The Washington Oxi Day Foundation is offering the following scholarships to five Greek-American students (Grades 6-12) who best describe philotimo. First Place: $2,000 scholarship and an invitation to the Foundation s October 25 black tie gala in Washington, DC, where the winner will be recognized Second Place: $1,000 scholarship (two) Third Place: $500 scholarship (two) To apply: 1.
