We were blessed with a beautiful day for our community day! The committee (God bless them) had worked for many months. Many of you were very generous with your time and a loan of useful items such as tents, fridges, trucks, and cookers. Everything was in place for a most successful day! The many helpers ensured set up and pack up went smoothly although we would have preferred to have a bit more help with some of the stalls during the day! It was most unexpected to have the power shut down! The poor lady who caused it was almost in shock! God bless our saviours in the form of the SES who provided us with generators to start the rides and enable more cooking! Thank you to all who supported St Joseph s School and Sacred Heart Parish. Dads Only Night Wednesday All dads are invited to explore and learn ways to be a better parent. Any relationships can be difficult. Consider your relationships with your parents! Perfect? Learn how to develop a strong relationship with your children that will last a lifetime! Come along on Wednesday night to a men only time! Easter This week, the whole Church will celebrate Easter, the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the heart of Christian faith and the key to Christian understanding of everything. What light do the death and resurrection of Jesus shine on the aims and efforts of 21st century? The gospels of Holy Week reflect on the last days of Jesus ministry. In short they reveal the excellence of his integrity, of his moral vision, his faithfulness to God, his love of others, his simplicity, his sense of service and his refusal of hatred and vengeance as the means of resolving conflict. Moreover, in the death of Jesus and through his resurrection God asserts forever solidarity with those who suffer, who are powerless and afflicted. His death and resurrection represent the victory of all that is good, just, true, gentle and compassionate over every cruel, merciless power. Over the Easter break take some time to reflect on and experience the important things! And also enjoy time with friends and family. God bless us all, John

This week the children will be participating in three para-liturgies that commemorate the important events leading up to Easter. Palm Sunday, being led by the Foundation and Junior classes, focuses on the procession of Jesus to Jerusalem when he is hailed as a king. The people welcomed him by singing Hosanna, waving palm branches and laying down their clothes on the path where Jesus rode. The Middles will conduct a re-enactment of the events of Holy Thursday which include the washing of feet, the Last Supper and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Even in his final hours, Jesus still taught his disciples and explained his stories and actions. The final para-liturgy will involve the senior students acting out the events of Good Friday where the people condemned Jesus. He was trialled, put to death on a cross and buried in a tomb. On Wednesday of the first week in second term we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at Easter with a whole school Mass. So why are these events, which fulfilled prophesies of the Old Testament, so significant? They remind us that Jesus was the Saviour that God had promised for so many centuries. Through his teachings and life, we are given a model to follow that will lead to happiness and final fulfilment in Heaven with God. 4 St. Patrick s Mass for Schools St. Patrick s Cathedral, Melbourne Thursday 14 th March 2013 On Thursday the 14 th March, eight senior students travelled to Melbourne for a Mass at St. Patricks Cathedral. Many Catholic schools arrived at the Cathedral, over people were there. There were many school banners at the Cathedral. Perry and Adina were chosen to represent our school by holding St. Joseph s school banner. Later, schools walked in with their banners. Soon the Bishop came into the Cathedral and began the Mass. It was quite different to our school Mass, because of what the Bishop said was mostly sung. We went to the Cathedral to celebrate St. Patrick s Day. St. Patrick was an Irish person whose parents told him about God and Jesus. When he grew up he became a slave for 6 years, and everyday he prayed to God about his problems. And one day he remembered all the things that his parents had told him and sailed back home. After the Mass had finished, our school banner was complimented by a helper and the Bishop himself. Later our school left the church and walked to Treasury Gardens Park, and had our lunch. All of the schools gathered at the park to eat. After we all ate the Police sang some songs on stage for us to enjoy and dance too. We also saw our past Principal, Mr Vanstan, we were glad to see him there. When we left the park, we caught the train back to Lilydale. When we got to Lilydale train station we got a lift back too our school from Mr. Colley and Mrs. Spencer. We enjoyed the day a lot. 5 St. Patrick s Mass for Schools St. Patrick s Cathedral, Melbourne Thursday 14th March 2013 This is when the seniors arrived at the Cathedral. These students are inside the Cathedral, while Perry and Adina were outside holding the banner. This is Adina and Perry holding the school s banner. These are the Bishops helpers coming into the Cathedral. These are the eight senior students eating their lunch. These are the school students dancing to the music.

6 JEFFREY SMART EXHIBITION TARRA WARRA MUSEUM OF ART COMMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS FROM SENIOR STUDENTS. It was fun learning about Jeffrey Smart s paintings and why he painted them. I really liked the peacefulness of the rooms. (Lotte.) I really liked seeing the originals. I liked the way he makes colours contrast. (Stella) As soon as I walked into the gallery I felt excited. It was so beautiful to see the paintings so close up and in real life. I loved the train painting and how long it was. (about 10 m- wow!!) I have never been to a gallery and loved it. (Kendra) I enjoyed the excursion and liked the design of the building. My favourite painting was the train. (Angus) It was amazing to seeing the paintings in real life. We got to get so close to them! They were a lot bigger in real life. The quality and the contrast was amazing. My favourite picture was the train. After going to Tarra Warra Museum it made me want to go to see more museums. My favourite painting was the big train. I loved just about all the paintings in the gallery. (Bailey) (When) we (arrived) we were greeted by a tour guide. We went into a room full of art all by Jeffrey Smart. We were shown lots of paintings. There was one that was 10 metres long and another with the Mona Lisa in it. I realised that most of the paintings had dark skies. There was also another section full of other artist s works. I think that this was a great experience. (Rory) I did not realise that his last painting was in 2011 (he was born in 1921). It was really good, especially since the outside wall (of the gallery) looked like the wall in one of his paintings called Labyrinth. All of his paintings were really good and I hope I go again. (Riley) When I walked in I felt tiny, but when I saw the paintings I was blown away, they were so beautiful. My favourite was the spiral staircase that ended at a random spot. I had so much fun. (Camryn) I love how he chooses two colours and puts them together and it always works so well. I like the type of greens and blues he uses even though he would use it so little, but it really makes a difference. (Ella R.)

8 Two weeks ago St Joes participated in the World Education Games. Over half our students played online during the competition period providing a total of correct answers across the three areas: Literacy, Science and Maths. WOW!! Congratulations to all students who had a go. You will receive a participation certificate this week. Special congratulations to Josh Read (Sen BV). He gained a Distinction Award in both the Literacy and Mathematics for finishing the full 50 rounds in each of these during the competition period! Great work Josh! 9 Hi everyone, Weren t we lucky to have such a lovely day for the Autumn Fair, we hope all enjoyed themselves with plenty to eat, browse and rides to go on. Great effort by the school and parish community. Please make sure you diarise the upcoming events and let us know if you are able to assist by contacting our chairperson Cathy Linder on or leave your details at the office. Upcoming events: Crank Up We really need to add more helpers to our list to run the BBQ at the Crank Up event being held at the Upper Yarra Museum in Yarra Junction, th th weekend of 6 and 7 of April, This will be a great fund raiser for the school and won t take much time if we can get enough helpers. If you missed out on helping with the fair, maybe this one is for you. It is in the middle of the school holidays after Easter. We would be looking at setting up a roster with 2 hour shifts (4 people per shift) from 9am to 4pm both days. Maybe your family would have the numbers or you could team up with another family and make it a bit of fun. If you can t help on the day chopping onions would be another way to assist. Please leave details (including phone no.) on the roster board, at the office and/or contact Cathy Footy Tipping (first round 22nd March) Results at partway through Round one DREW CUMMINGS IS NOT ON TOP OF THE LADDER WELL DONE NICK. Because we are only part way through the first round you can still join in and have a chance. Join in for a bit of fun competition within the school community. All picks done online. See flyer sent home for more information. Easter Raffle th The Easter Raffle is to be drawn on Thursday 28 March. Thank you for your generous donations for the hampers and good luck to all!! Many th hands make light work and if anyone can help put the hampers together tomorrow morning, Tuesday 26 March, please meet in the staff room at 9:00am. Parents & Friends Goals for 2013: Update our school Library by replacing old stock and purchasing much needed new books. Tables to go with the new furniture in the South Building. A Path leading from the school to the SPA centre. A Pie Warmer for more hot lunch days. The Parents & Friends committee are happy to welcome more members, many hands make light work. We are meeting 2 times per term during 2013, but you don t have to attend meetings if you can t or prefer not to. We have lots of events and activities proposed for this year; for example, The Autumn Fair, Bushdance, Shopping Tour, Trivia Night and we are always open for suggestions. th The next parents and friends meeting is tonight, Monday 25 March in the staff room at 7pm. Donna s contact number is: WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN STICKERS WILL BE STARTING AGAIN DURING THE TERM 1 HOLIDAYS On 8 April the 2013 earn and learn rewards are due to start. If you, or your family, shop at Woolworths please save the stickers and we will have sticker cards to give out at the beginning of Term 2. Last year we were fortunate to be able to add thousands of dollars worth of equipment to our school resources.
