2 From the Pastor Called to Serve The last weeks have been full of rain, rain and more rain. Good for the environment, but we do tend to get crabby about the limitations on our activities after a while, right? I can t get out on my bicycle and that definitely makes me crabby! But the weather doesn t change the call on our lives that God s love makes. We are called to serve. To serve our neighbor. So many of you are involved in mission and outreach projects and activities. Whether it is the Gathering Inn, St. Vincent de Paul, the St. James food locker, the Haiti Partnership, Stop Hunger Now, Living Water International, Acres of Hope the list goes on with the many things we are doing as a church and individually. Being called to serve our neighbor has many faces. Some feel they cannot participate in things like those I listed above. Maybe because of health issues or the demands of a job and family life. Let s consider, though, the many tiny things we can do each day to serve our neighbor. Prayers. A supportive phone call, text, or note to someone who is struggling. A smile and kind word for a parent struggling with kids in the store. Thoughtful driving on the roads. There are so many tiny ways that we can be agents for God s love with our families, our friends, and with strangers. We are all called to serve our neighbor. Don t beat yourself up for the ways you think you aren t serving others. Instead look for the tiny ways you can. Remember. Love wins! Sunday School begins at 9:50 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions. The FISH Youth Group meets 6 to 7:45 p.m. for dinner, lessons and worship most Sundays. Social Issues Book Group Goal $400,000 Committed $435,165 Collected $223,978 Capital Campaign July 1, 2015 ~ June 30, 2018 The St. Augustine Social Issues Book Group will meet at the church on Thursday, February 9 th, at 1 p.m. Our book will be Amazing Grace by Jonathan Kozol. This is a great opportunity to come and serve your local community. Sign up to prepare food and the rooms for our guests, or help serve food and clean up. It is a lot of fun and a fine way to help those in need. Families are very welcome to come and work together serving our community. Sign-up sheets are at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. For more information, please contact Jim Quinney at: jim@caliwaii.com Grocery Cart Ministry Please continue to fill the February grocery cart with cereal, canned or dry beans, rice, tuna and canned chicken. These foods are a tremendous help to those in need. Salad dressings are always welcome, too. Throw a few extra cans in your cart while you are shopping, bring them Sunday and place them in the grocery cart at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. Our donations go to support the St. James Food Pantry in Lincoln. Thank you for your contributions! The Gathering Inn Please! Look in your closets for coats, jackets, jeans and other warm clothing that you have not worn for a couple of years. Why don t you take these items and other forgotten clothing to St. Augustine for The Gathering Inn? Small-size toiletry items are also needed. Please place all clothing and food items in the grocery cart at the entrance to the Church. Singing Rooster Coffee This special coffee, farm direct from Haiti, is available in Canterbury Hall every Sunday. Each purchase helps Haiti and our Outreach programs. 4

9 Getting to Know Tom Gartin... You don t have to check your brain at the door, says Tom Gartin, when asked why he chose to become an Episcopalian. Tom is the very tall young man with the very long vestments who has been with us for some time in various volunteer positions. Now he is officially on our Church staff as the newly appointed Coordinator of Adult Formation and Communications, a part-time paid position. Ever since the beginning of the Church, one of its vital practices has been spiritual formation, Tom says. He thinks of each parish as a spiritual co-op; we gather together to worship God s gifts with each other. Tom s function is to work along with Pastor Liz and Pastor Maryellen to help parishioners cultivate a richer sense of connection to God and to engage with something that will help us grow our minds and hearts together. His role is to keep us focused on this goal. He also will serve as a point of contact as he helps create opportunities where formation can happen. Tom is a whiz at social media with such platforms as Facebook, Instagram, Google business listings and Yelp. He keeps St. Augustine s name in the forefront with his entries, which is especially important since this is the way young people get their information. Tom is the son of fellow parishioners Bob and Lana Gartin. He grew up in Rocklin and attended Sierra College. He then moved on to Bethany University in Santa Cruz where he earned a B.A. in Church Leadership. Tom was raised in the Assemblies of God tradition, but joined the Episcopal Church in 2011, after sensing the Spirit s guidance. Tom and his wife, Miranda-Lynn Gartin, have much in common, as they share the same goal of becoming priests. She is on the staff at Faith Episcopal Church in Cameron Park. Tom is currently working at Roseville s Woodcreek High School, assisting students with special needs. In 2011, Tom and his wife moved to Atlanta where they attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and both received Masters of Divinity in Anglican Studies. Tom served as a seminarian at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta and, later, as youth director at St. Paul s in Newman. Tom and Miranda-Lynn moved back to Rocklin in 2016, and are now involved in the ordination process with the Diocese of Northern California. The process takes time, and there are many requirements. Presently Tom is an aspirant, a person who has indicated to the Bishop that he hopes to be ordained. Our Church Vestry has approved his application to become a postulant, a person who has been accepted by the Bishop as a candidate for ordination and is currently being trained. The postulancy application procedure is lengthy, and it finally ends with the Bishop s approval. We are very lucky to have Tom with us, especially working with our young people. He is a co-leader, along with Jim Quinney and Gaby Sisk, of our FISH group, which has grown into two sections, 6 th though 8 th and 9 th through 12 th grades. Tom helps with our services, and his welcoming personality is a great asset. By Barbara Woolman 9

Please RSVP to Jim Quinney, Tom Gartin or Gaby Sisk. FISH Sunday Sunday, February 5 th, FISH members will lead our 10 a.m. service. Members of our youth group will serve as ushers, oblation bearers, acolytes, Eucharistic ministers, lectors and will even share reflections during the sermon portion of our service. NO FISH The Youth Group will not meet February 5 th or February 19 th. If you come to FISH on those nights, you will be all alone and ultimately very sad. Please mark these dates in your preferred calendar app. Talking Spiritually about Love and Sex! On February 26 th, we are going to talk about love, sex and dating. This conversation is only for the senior high members of FISH and will be guided by Tom Gartin and Gaby Sisk. Sunday School Classes are going very well in Sunday School. We would love to have a couple more teachers in the rotation. Our curriculum is easy to follow and literally takes five minutes to prep! I have teachers who have stepped in on a Sunday morning when someone has called in sick. If your heart is calling you towards this ministry, please contact Melissa Lovin at missylovin@gmail.com to be added to the sign-up genius for Sunday School. You pick which days work for you and which class you would prefer to teach. You are always welcome to sit in on a Sunday and see what we do before being added to the list. Nursery Ministry Our nursery is doing well. Please know that you are welcome to bring your child back into the nursery after communion, if you choose. Please let Shelby know you plan to do this, so she is prepared. Our attendants take turns to receive communion, but there is always someone in the nursery. We now have four assistants who rotate each week. They are: Madison Lovin, Christopher Buck, Lily Beckman, and Zach Beckman. 13
14 What would happen if you were in a car accident or you fell in the grocery store? Would anyone be able to get you the help you need? If you were taken to a hospital, would the staff know about your medical condition and prescriptions? Do you have your emergency information available in an easily accessible place? The Mom Conference Saturday, March 18, 2017 Mark Your Calendars! Registration is open for this event. Tickets can be purchased through the website: The Communication Team has provided a File of Life card which gives a place to write in all your important medical data. The card fits conveniently in places like your refrigerator, your wallet or the glove compartment of your car(s). It also comes with a plastic cover which is red and easily spotted. If you are taken to a hospital, all of your information would be easily available so the staff would know about your medical situations. Your insurance and emergency contact numbers also would be listed. The cards are found on the little table against the wall outside Pastor Liz s office. Take as many as you need for your family and friends. The Communication Team offers these as a service to the community. 14
15 Prayer Shawl Ministry Are you perhaps looking for a new way to make a difference in someone s life, a pay it forward act of kindness if you will? Or perhaps you would like to learn a new skill and enjoy the company and fellowship of a group of women? Have you considered joining those of us who knit and crochet prayer shawls? These shawls are given to people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life s challenges. We meet each month in Canterbury Hall on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. We have several shawls in inventory. If you would like to give one to someone who is not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer Nave. They are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. For shawls given outside the congregation, a donation by the giver to replenish our yarn supply is appreciated, but not required. DOK The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King meets on the second Sunday of each month following the 10 a.m. service. The next meeting will be held Sunday, February 12 th. Members will have a discussion and activity about What is Love? If you are interested in becoming a Daughter or would like more information, please contact Joanne McCormack, Chapter President, at: joannenola@icloud.com The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast are served. All men and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Rob Shonk is the Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob or Secretary John Redmond. The Brotherhood looks to the year 2017 for planning many service events. The group will sponsor another fund-raising BBQ sometime in May or June. The Brothers will also team-up to participate in the STOP HUNGER NOW program in March. They will also organize projects for National Service Day in April. The Brothers will conclude their book discussion on Living Reconciliation by Phil Groves and Angharad Parry Jones at the February and March meetings. The next meeting will be Saturday, February 11 th at 9 a.m. John Redmond will offer up his famous Mountain Man breakfast. Always a favorite with the Brothers!! 15

( Suffering sounds rather dramatic, but in Buddhism it refers to any source of profound dissatisfaction be it physical or psychoemotional or spiritual.) Understanding, after all, is what everybody needs but even if we grasp this on a theoretical level, we habitually get caught in the smallness of our fixations. He illustrates this mismatch of scales with an apt metaphor: If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We cannot accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things do not make us suffer any more. We have a lot of understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform. Wise words on love from a world-revered spiritual leader! Love and blessings dear friends, Carole Peterson Lord, grant that I may not so much seek to be loved as to love. St. Francis of Assisi 18
