1 The Canterbury Tales September 2012 From the Pastor Dear St. Augustine Family and Friends, The Mission Committee met last month for a wonderful one-day retreat. Over the course of the day we talked about who we are as a congregation, where we are going, and the role of Mission Committee leadership. We celebrated the many wonderful ministries, activities and events of the last year. We also brainstormed about important areas to focus on over the next year, as we begin our transition into a permanent building and a new, highly visible presence in the community. The three focus areas identified are: Newcomer Ministry Christian Education for all ages Communication to the congregation about all aspects of our transition period both the building process and preparing our congregational ministries to welcome new people. The Mission Committee also identified core values: A sense of being family Being a place that values children Taking the Christian faith seriously Active local and global outreach To be a safe place for all seeking God To be resilient To offer hospitality and fellowship to all. I hope each of you continues to pray daily for St. Augustine. And I hope each of you will take part in our upcoming study of the parables in one of the six different small groups. God is calling us to be servants to our community and being spiritually strong is part of our calling! God s Peace, Pastor Liz 1

5 New Choir Year Begins September 30 The St. Augustine Choir will begin rehearsals Sunday, September 30, at 9 AM in Canterbury Hall. Dennis Krause, our new Music Director, invites anyone who enjoys singing to become a part of this musical family. New members are welcome and needed. There is no audition necessary, but Dennis would like to hear from you so that a folder and music can be prepared. Please contact Dennis (see Church Directory) for further information. Musical preparations for Advent and Christmas will begin soon. Congratulations! Welcome to baby Arianna, born to Jim & Kim Grauel, August 17. Mother and baby are doing well. Arianna will be baptized Sunday, September 30 at St. Augustine. Dear Friends, A Special Thank You On behalf of the Howe and Donaldson families from Stow, OH, Tucson, AZ and Carlsbad, Los Gatos, Lincoln, and Rocklin, CA, I want to express our gratutide for the love, support, prayers, and just being there for Ginny and me over not just the last three months, but for the five years of pain and suffering Ginny endured before her release on August 4. Your visits, cards, flowers, phone calls and words of encouragement when we attended church were the source of our strength to go on. We could not believe there was such an abundance of love for us. You made Ginny so very happy and surprised in every good way. I believe yours was the most generous and perfect gift that she could have been given. For myself, I can find no way to express my feelings other than to say thank you, God bless you all, and know that our entire family will never forget your generosity and love. The September 9 FISH Youth Group meeting will be a Family Day outing to Alta Sierra Biblical Gardens near Auburn. We have a team of people who are prepared to help lead, plan lessons and outreach opportunities and participate with our FISH members. FISH membership is made up of middle school and high school teens. We welcome new members! Mention the group to family and friends. You do not have to go to church here to attend our Youth Group. Come join us for fun, fellowship, prayer and learning. If you have a child or grandchild you think would be interested in joining FISH, don t hesitate to contact Jim Quinney or Reese Allen (see Church Directory). You are invited to join in this wonderful Ministry of our Diocese. Cursillo #107 will be held October 4 7, 2012 at Camp Noel Porter. More information is available on the entry table or you may contact Dan Boeger, Cursillo #107 Rector, at Women s Gathering Day Celebrate the Capable Woman All women are invited to the Diocesan Women s Gathering Day, Celebrate the Capable Woman, Saturday, September 22, 2012, 9 AM to noon at St. Luke s, Woodland. Our congregations depend on many gracious women who are doing the work of the church and reaching out in their communities. The Diocesan Commission of Women s Ministries work supports and serves these women through education, encouragement, and grant funds for this outreach. The first three recipients of the Spring Women s Ministries Grants will share their outreach work at this Gathering. Come to this event to learn new ideas and share experiences. For more information, please contact Greer Nave (see Church Directory) or Gaye McWade at or gmcwade@bamagazine.com. Who can find a capable woman? She is more precious than jewels. 8 Church School News DOK Any woman who feels called to a life of prayer, service and evangelism is invited to come to our Daughters of the King meetings after the 10 AM service on the second Sunday of the month in the school conference room. This month the meeting will be Sunday, September 9. Rhonda Wampler will lead us in a special spiritual program. The prayer shawl ministry continues to meet on the first Thursday of every month at Greer Nave s home from 10 AM noon. Please contact Greer if you are interested in this ministry. This month the Daughters presented prayer shawls to three of our church members who are recovering from surgery and illness. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew will hold its regular monthly meeting September 8 at 9 AM in Canterbury Hall. All men are welcome to attend meetings and participate in our outreach activities. Coffee and refreshments will be served. Please join us! For more information, contact Ralph Nave or Dave Thomas (see Church Directory). Get Ready! Get Set! Go! September will be a busy month for our Sunday School children. We will begin our new curriculum, Living the Good News, September 9. The children will learn about the Gospel story at the same time as the parents hear it during the lessons and sermon. Each Sunday we will also learn about a saint or a special person from the Bible. We will have a music session and lots of exciting activities too. On September 30, the children will participate in the special Baptism service, as greeters and ushers, and we will sing a special song. We will have more Bible stories, exciting games, new songs and fun crafts. Join us for the beginning of Sunday School, Sunday, September 9. Canterbury Hall at 10 AM sharp. Calling all Parents, Grandparents & St. Augustine Friends! Please consider answering the call to teach and to instill Christian concepts, traditions and values in our young minds. Revisit those creative and artistic talents that made our Vacation Bible School such a success. Allow those hidden talents to flourish! If you would like to occasionally help out in our Sunday School classroom (tell a Bible story, help with puppet shows, help with a song or craft), please contact Susan Lampton (see Church Directory). 8
9 Companion s Corner Silent Gifts of Grace September Birthdays September 8 Jack Dillon September 9 Tim Southwick September 11 Charley Berger September 20 Helen Costa Karon Nelmes September 21 Kalie Geiger September 25 Kathy Jordan September 29 Susan Landolt September Anniversaries September 4 September 5 Bill & Cathy Erickson Bob & Chris Deering Joe & Joan Cavanagh This past month of August saw events within our parish family of the workings of God s grace to us in very different ways. The big Sawyer family reunion brought many joys and tears, as Jim and Barbara brought their family to Church. I have had the privilege of hearing Jim both sing and say the words to the song I Won t Complain, as he walks with a very serious illness with both grace and courage. As we watch him and Barbara, they minister to all of us in a very special way. On the same weekend that the Sawyers gathered, one of our most beloved members entered into her new life. Ginny Howe was a mentor and mother to us all, regardless of age. Her journey and Bill s walk with her was a ministry to us in grace as we prayed and asked for both solace and a peaceful parting. It was Ginny who told us via the video Hurry Up! Hurry Up, in reference to our First Church. As we build, we whisper thank you, Ginny we are hurrying, we are hurrying! August also brought a new birth within our parish. As God so often does, we see the juxtaposition of life and death and we give thanks for this new baby girl, Arianna, welcomed by Jim and Kim Grauel, August 17. Proverbial Wisdom Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Proverbs 3:5 This is a very special church family. We feel each other s pain and joy intensely and September seemed an appropriate time to say thank you to these special lives and to several others in the parish family who continue to walk in grace in spite of illness. You teach us much. God s blessing, dear friends. Carole Peterson 9
10 The Big BBQ Event Special thanks to our Event Committee: Stepanie Tilton, Jeanne Rochelle, Melissa and Rick Lovin, Catherine and Aaron Beckman, and Amy Quinney for their hard work and time putting together the BBQ Event. Also, special thanks go to Jack Dillon, Rick and Janice Stenzel and Carlton and Theresa Allen for the food preparation and service, as well as Rob Shonk and the incredible band he put together. And many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the event so awesome. It was loads of fun and we had a good number of visitors. And last but not least, thanks to Jim Quinney for heading up the event. Chefs Crew Kids Musicians 10
