The Canterbury Tales August 2012 CALLED TO BUILD IT S A NEW DAY Dear St. Augustine Family & Friends, August is upon us and with it lots of opportunities for learning and growing. School is starting for most in just a few weeks and families will take on new schedules and new activities. Sunday School will be starting up again on August 26 and our kids and adults will be learning about God s love and God s plan for each of our lives. We are full steam ahead with First Church planning. The Diocese has approved the loans and grants we need to move forward and we will be working with them to get the timing and paperwork in place. The City of Rocklin will be responding to our Use Permit application the first week of August and then the Building the Church Committee will be working to finalize that permit and to begin the actual Building Permit process. Lots of wonderful things being done by so many gifted and generous people here at St. Augustine! Change is in the air good change, wonderful, dreamed for change. But change always brings with it the need to grow and be open to the twists and turns of life. And that doesn t always feel comfortable. Join me in praying each day (multiple times each day!) for the work we are in the midst of and the changes all around us. God is with us and God s peace is ours for the praying With much gratitude Pastor Liz 1
St. Augustine of Canterbury The Vision The Result Total = $518, Commitments = $513,784 Additional Gifts = $4,295 Gratitude for the Results Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. (Luke 6:38) Prayer Guide I commit to pray for St. Augustine Episcopal Church For those we do not know who are not yet our members. For the leadership and community of our congregation. For greater impact on the surrounding community. For discernment of our mission to Rocklin and the strength and courage to be faithful to this calling. For openness of heart to prayerfully discern what gift I will make. Grace and Peace The Prayer Team 2
In this issue From the Pastor.. 1 Capital Campaign...2 Special Thanks & Book Club News..3 Service Times, Special Events, Outreach. 4 Announcements..4 & 5 Companion s Corner/Birthdays/Anniversaries 6 Church BBQ..8 Church Contact Information..9 Special Thanks The Building the Church (BTC) Committee has been chaired by Steve Mershon for the last several years. Steve has led the charge and helped this congregation see the possibilities for building the First Church with energy and passion. As the chair position transitions to Jim Tilton in this next phase, many special thanks to Steve! St. Augustine is becoming a parish in November! Thank you to John and Kathleen Quigley for gathering the information and putting together the outstanding application packet. We are putting together a bus trip to the Diocesan Convention on November 10 for this special event. We have $1.5 million in loans and $205,000 in grants approved by the Diocese! All members of the Resources Development Committee (RDC) and BTC have served this congregation with skill and grace over the last months as the loan and grant presentations were developed and put together resulting in this wonderful outcome. Small Group Studies Materials have been chosen for small group studies to being again this fall! The topic will be the parables of Jesus. The materials are divided into thirteen weeks of study. The plan is to begin studies in mid- October for six weeks. The classes will conclude the week before Palm Sunday on March 24. The groups will remain the same for both sessions unless personal schedules necessitate changing groups. This plan responds to the surveys answered by a majority of people after our first gatherings, asking for short term classes. It also gives us an opportunity to gather in fellowship regularly during the season of Lent. Books will be sold from late August until groups begin and will cost $10. Scholarship funds are available. Now, here is a question for you: How many parables did Jesus present? Within the Catholic church, the number 57 is given. In Protestant churches the numbers are 42 and 46 and Wiki answers the questions with the word a lot! 3
Service Times & Events Outreach 8:30 AM Sunday Service The 8:30 AM service on Sundays is a simple service without music using Rite II. This quiet service with communion will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship. 10:00 AM Sunday Service The 10:00 AM service on Sundays is a full service with the support of the Chancel Choir. Sunday School begins at 10:00 AM every Sunday excepting some holy days and special occasions. St. Vincent de Paul Food Locker You Pick It August is You Pick It Month. That s right, no color. If it is in a can or box with a long shelf life and you would eat it, then they can use it. You are in control this month, so let s see what you think is good to eat! Fall Cursillo Plans You are invited to join in this wonderful Ministry of our Diocese. Cursillo #107 will be held October 4 7, 2012 at Camp Noel Porter. More information is available on the entry table or you may contact Dan Boeger, Cursillo 107 Rector, at Summer Pledge Payments Please remember to keep your pledge payments to the Operating Fund current during the summer months. Thank you from your church treasurer and pledge clerk. The Gathering Inn Special thanks for a very successful Sock Sunday. We collected over 100 pairs of sock and some other additional clothing items. Thank you for your continued support. Many of you have heard The Gathering Inn has had to suspend many of the services they provide to their clients due to some funding shortfalls. This is expected to last for one to two months. We are actively trying to determine what we can do to help. Please keep them in your prayers and we will notify you via as we develop a game plan. 4
Announcements St. Augustine Youth Group Coming Up October Festival Mark Your Calendars! Sunday, October 14 4:00 PM The St. Augustine Youth Group, FISH (Friends in Serving Him) will begin meeting again on Sundays in August from 4:30 6:00 PM in Canterbury Hall. Sarah Quinney, one of our leaders, will be attending Church Divinity of the Pacific in Berkeley this fall as she pursues ordination. We have begun preparations to transition new leaders into the group. If you would like to volunteer in any fashion, please let Pastor Liz know. We have a team of people who are prepared to help lead, plan lessons, plan outreach opportunities and just show up. FISH membership is made up of middle school and high school aged teens. We welcome new members! We need your help. Keep thinking about items for the silent auction. We would really like to have 30 nice items on which to bid. Call Jim Quinney if you need any support or want us to contact someone directly. The event is going to be great. We have wine and beer tasting, silent auction, live band, catered dinner all under one roof at the Bue Goose in Loomis. Tickets will be going on sale closer to the end of August. Save the date and time Sunday, October 14 at 4:00 PM. This is going to be a very special Sunday afternoon and another great opportunity to show off your Christian Family to friends and neighbors. Mention the group to family and friends. You do not have to go to church here to attend our youth group. Come join us for fun, fellowship, prayer and learning. If you have a child or grandchild you think would be interested in joining FISH, don t hesitate to contact Sarah Quinney, Jim Quinney or Reese Allen. 5

DOK Any woman who feels called to a life of prayer, service and evangelism is invited to come to our Daughters of the King meetings after the 10:00 AM service on the second Sunday of the month in the school conference room. This month the meeting will be on August 12. Barbara Sawyer will lead us in a special spiritual program. The prayer shawl ministry continues to meet on the first Thursday of every month at Greer Nave s home from 10:00 AM noon. Please contact Greer if you are interested in this ministry. This month the Daughters presented prayer shawls to three of our church members who are recovering from surgery and illness. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew will hold their regular monthly meeting August 11 at 9:00 AM in Canterbury Hall. All men are welcome to attend our meetings and participate in our outreach activities. Brother Jack (Dillon) will provide one of his super breakfasts Saturday. Even if you are not a member, come and sample the results of Jack s superior culonary skills. Please join us! For more information, contact Ralph Nave or Dave Thomas. Church School News Calling All Kids!!! Ready! Get set! Go! Get ready for fun! We will have more Bible stories, exciting games, new songs and lot of fun crafts. Sunday School begins August 26. Join us in Canterbury Hall at 10:00 AM sharp. Calling all Parents, Grandparents, & St. Augustine Friends! Please consider answering that call to teach and to instill Christian concepts, traditions and values in our young minds. Revisit those creative and artistic talents that made our Vacation Bible School such a success. Allow those hidden talents to flourish! Would you like to occasionally help in our classroom? Could you tell a Bible story to our youngsters? Could puppets be your creative outlet? Can you lead the children in a song or a craft activity? We need teachers, helpers, storytellers, musicians and craft leaders. Our curriculum provides a new Bible story each week with plenty of guidance and ideas. We will have tons of materials for exciting craft projects. And there will be lots of games and songs to add to the fun. Please contact Susan Lampton if you are interested in getting involved. We are making up the fall Schedule now. 7
Companion s Corner Forever Changed August Birthdays August 1 Mary Morehead August 2 Bob Deering August 3 Sierra Nelmes August 4 Lydia Nelmes August 8 Barbara Sawyer August 9 Carole Peterson August 13 Scott Drageset August 20 Rick Rae August 25 Jim Sawyer August 27 Sandy Derby August 31 Rhonda Wampler August Anniversaries August 8 Bill & Marcia Rush August 11 Rob & Deidre Shonk August 24 Jim & Stephanie Tilton August 26 Robert & Dorothy Branch A significant day in church life occurs Monday, August 6. The transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor is one of the major events of His life. The disciples who accompanied Jesus were awestruck by what they saw. They knew they were witnessing the passing of the torch to Jesus. Transfiguration is closely related to the word transform. This brought to mind the amazing transformation occurring within our parish. As we look back over the past year, we have seen the arrival of a new priest, the development of a children s education program, adult education occurring via small groups, a Vacation Bible School and a miraculous amount of money committed to the building of our First Church. When we view these events alone, we can miss the transfiguration/transformation that is occurring within our church family. In total, this transformation is truly a God given miracle. There was hope and belief that this could happen, but I doubt any of us expected it to happen so fast. In the midst of a more quiet time, let us pause to give thanks. We are being transformed as a parish and we are being transformed as individuals. God is truly in this place and God has blessed us in miraculous ways. Thanks be to God! Proverbial Wisdom To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the Lord. Rejoice with me, dear friends in Christ. Carole Peterson Proverbs 1:3 8
