Like most Episcopalians, I get suspicious and nervous around self-described evangelists and their message. If someone starts talking to me about Jesus and how he died for my sins, I start backing away slowly and looking for an escape route. If the preacher tells me it s my duty to tell others the good news of Jesus as in the great commission, go and make disciples of all nations I think, if I wanted to do that, I would have joined one of those other churches. Episcopalians don't do that. Or do we? As a teenager I went to one of those other churches and in my teenage earnestness, I took seriously the admonition to spread the gospel. I was one of those annoying people, sure of my salvation and sure of my duty to help others secure theirs. I bravely proclaimed my faith on my belt buckle no less. With age I've become less earnest but hopefully more wise. With age and maturity, I've learned that evangelism is more about relationship than revelation, more about blessing than burden, more about mercy than mission. Recently, a group of us from Saint Mark's attended a seminar in Lincoln called "Invite, Welcome, Connect" developed by Mary Parmer. In her approach, the ministry of evangelism is described in terms of invitation. We learned practical and gentle methods for inviting people into relationship, into church life, into a faith journey. We learned how to look for ways to make "church", our building and our community more inviting. Most of us like to talk about those things that are most important to us, family, children, grandchildren, work, career, home, health. Really, there is not much else for us to talk about is there? After all, it s fun to tell people good news. But what about faith? What about our values? What about those things we are willing to lay down our lives for? Inviting people to discover what is most important to us, what gives us hope, what gets us through the toughest of days, is evangelism by an easier name. And that too is good news. I'll explore the second part of Invite, Welcome, Connect, "Welcome - the ministry of hospitality next week. I m pretty sure Dean Katie has plans to bring this process to Saint Mark s in the near future. In the meantime, if you want to learn more, here is the website. 1

3 HAPPENINGS THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER A previous bulletin listed the Great Vigil of Easter service at 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 31 st. The time has been changed to 8:00 pm. EASTER LILIES Sign-up sheets are placed in the library and in the back of the church, if you would like to make an Easter Lily Dedication. The deadline is March 25 th and coming up quickly! Please put your name and dedication on the sheet, and we ll take care of your payment at a later date. BLESSINGS & GIFTS Our March BAG project is board games for the YWCA s ZONE after school program. LENTEN SOUP SUPPER WITH GUEST SPEAKER Each Wednesday in Lent, we will gather at 6 p.m. for a soup supper in the Undercroft followed by a presentation from a guest speaker.
