From the Pastor We Belong to God This is a time of year when the demands on us can begin to feel overwhelming. The Holiday Season seems to begin earlier and earlier and encompass more and more planning and time. Travel plans, shopping, parties, family gatherings all of it seems to pile up. How easy it is for us to lose track of who we belong to and how we want to manage our time, our energy, our resources. So let me remind us all we belong to God and we can shape our decision-making on things other than the loud voices of commercials, advertising, the cultural forces all around us. This is a great time to renew our focus on having daily practices of prayer and quiet and thoughtfulness. Always remember that 10 seconds of any of these daily practices is OK. Having an hour of perfect solitude is not required to get re-centered in God s love for you! Take your tiny moments to remind yourself that you are enough, that God s love is always present with you and in you, and that you can choose ways for your daily life that feel God-centered. We belong to God! 4 The Gathering Inn Grocery Cart Ministry Rotating Shelter Program Want to do something very rewarding that really matters? Join us for The Gathering Inn Overnight Shelter Program every second Wednesday of the month. There are five or six different tasks that need to be performed throughout the late afternoon and evening (setting tables, preparing salad and bread, greeting the guests, cleaning up, etc.). We host about 65 men, women and children by providing a substantial hot meal and overnight shelter for our brothers and sisters who are either permanently or temporarily homeless. We need volunteers for the October 14 th dinner. This would be a great time to explore this wonderful ministry, especially if you are new to St. Augustine. Our youth (10 and up) may also volunteer. The Gathering Inn Let s be optimistic! The weather is going to change and we will have some rain. Look in your closets for lightly used raincoats and light jackets you have not worn in some time. Our friends at The Gathering Inn can use good jackets. As always, toiletry items are in need. Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the back of Canterbury Hall. Please continue to support the Grocery Cart Ministry. The need is great. Beans, rice, peanut butter and canned vegetables are always appreciated. These items can be placed in the grocery cart at the back of Canterbury Hall. Our donations go to support the St. James Food Pantry in Lincoln and St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Roseville. St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room The St. Augustine group of volunteers serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided and no cooking experience is needed. Please contact Gaby Sisk if you are interested in working in this important ministry. 4

Join the Team! Make a Difference! Nor Cal Walks for Water 3rd Annual Walkathon Saturday, October 17 th 9 a.m. William Jessup University There is still time to participate in the 3rd Annual Nor Cal Walks for Water Walkathon, a fundraiser for Living Water International. Join Pastor Liz and the St. Augustine Team to help us bring clean safe water and the message of Jesus Christ, the true Living Water, to those in need. Even though we are currently dealing with a serious drought, we are still blessed with an abundance of water. Our efforts to provide the basics of water and nutrition will help to effect change and ultimately break the chain of poverty through education. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to fund five wells in Haiti. Please consider different ways to participate. You can join a team and walk on Saturday, October 17 th. Or, if you cannot participate the day of the event, please consider making a generous donation. Go to the website for further information. 5

The FISH Youth Group has begun meeting at their new time, 6 p.m. on Sunday evenings in Canterbury Hall. They will meet every Sunday in October except October 11 th. Guests are always welcome. Jim Quinney and Gaby Sisk are the leaders. They are looking forward to a great year with good study, fellowship time and lots of fun activities in addition to gathering for dinner before each meeting. If you are interested in providing dinner for the group usually around 10 folks, please contact Carole Geiger at cgeiger@surewest.net. We began our new curriculum, Whirl, a lectionary based Sunday School program in September. It seems to be going well. Each week we read a lesson from the Bible that goes with this curriculum. The children also will see a short video each week that applies to the topic for the day and then do some related activities. Please note, this program is designed for a longer time period, so we are beginning Sunday School at 9:50 a.m. each week. So that our classes have time to complete the lessons, please try to arrive on time. During the month of October, the children will learn a new song. They will be performing at the 10 a.m. service November 15th. Please plan to attend that service. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions. My is missylovin@gmail.com. Melissa Lovin, Children s Ministry Coordinator The nursery is open during the entire Church service for infants through children age three. If you would like your child to receive communion or a blessing, please be sure to come into the nursery and get them. Please let the attendants know if the children will be returning to the nursery for the remainder of the service or staying with you in Church. The children receive a snack about mid-morning. During this time, they listen to the same story that we are hearing in the Primary Sunday School class. 6

More Youth News!!!! Mark Your Calendars! Family Resource Fair Are you looking for faith-filled videos and books that your children will love? If you have questions, please contact Melissa Lovin at missylovin@gmail.com. 7 Vol. 5 No. 10 St. Augustine Episcopal Church ~ Rocklin, CA October 2015

Pastoral Team Stroke Prevention Although the overall stroke rate is decreasing, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology, January 2014, strokes are a definite risk and not just to the senior population, but also for the young and middle-aged. In fact, this article states that the rate is increasing in folks ages Along with medical help if needed, there are things we can all do to reduce the risk of stroke. We have no control over our race, gender, heredity or age, but we do know things that we can control. Keep weight at a healthy level. Eat healthy - increase foods from plants, such as veggies, beans, whole grains and nuts. Increase seafood in place of red meat, poultry and eggs. Limit intake of sodium, solid fats, added sugars and refined grains. Decrease calories in food and drink and increase caloric burn by increased activity. Limit alcohol to two drinks per day for men, and one drink per day for women (a drink is defined as 12 oz of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.25 oz 1.5 oz. of alcohol). Decrease or eliminate smoking. Stroke occurrences can be doubled by smoking. Avoid drug use. Decrease stress. Many stresses come from the workplace and family responsibilities. Classes and counseling can help. Setting aside time to relax and exercise can also be great stress reducers. Our faith can also help as we learn to meditate and talk to God. Incorporate regular exercise into your weekly routine. Choose activities that you enjoy and find fun. Recommendations include moderate activity of 150 minutes per week or vigorous activity 75 minutes per week. Weight-training two times a week is also recommended. The recommendations listed above are definitely things we can control and can lead to a healthy mind and body. I often find it is motivating to take a class, read an article or join a group to learn more about keeping a body healthy. Find your best learning situation. The pledges we will make in November are our annual pledges for our operating budget, the budget that includes all of our programs, salaries and other expenses. Our focus is not on the specific financial needs of the Church (although all financial documents are available for your review), rather our focus is on our response to God s love and care for us. We are reminded that all that we are and all that we have is gifted to us from God out of God s great love for us. Please join us in prayer for St. Augustine as we work together to be the hands and feet and voice of Jesus in the world. Baptized into The Kingdom of God On Sunday, September 13 th, Thomas Walter Schmidt was baptized at St. Augustine Church. His proud parents are Katie and Jeremy Schmidt. The thirty veterans will be accompanied by "guardians, trained volunteers who pay their own expenses just for the honor of serving these American heroes. The Honor Flight network consists of over 133 chapters all over the country and has flown over 90,000 veterans back to see their memorial. It was created in 2005 to pay tribute to veterans for the service and sacrifices they made during that war. Cole's service to his country will be honored with this flight as he visits the memorial that recognizes those American heroes who fought in World War II. We are glad that Cole has this opportunity and honor. 12

Meal Train Ministry The Meal Train Ministry is an online calendar that organizes delivery of meals for parish families in times of need. Using this coordinated calendar will avoid duplications of menus and allow volunteers to choose a day that is convenient to deliver meals. Family food preferences and allergies are listed. Barbara Woolman is in charge of the Meal Train Ministry. If you are interested in providing meals for parish families in times of need, please contact Barbara at: barbwoolmn@comcast.net The Moms Group is off to a great start. We will meet three times in October (1 st, 15 th, 29 th ). The group meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunday School room. Child care will be available, if needed. Our theme this year is "A Year of Blessing. 14 DOK The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King meets on the second Sunday of each month after the 10 a.m. service. The next meeting will be October 11 th in the Sunday School room. If you are interested in becoming a Daughter or would like more information, please contact Deidre Shonk, Chapter President. There will be a study group for new members beginning this Fall. Contact Deidre or Greer Nave, if you are interested. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast is served. All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Rob Shonk is the Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob or Vice Director John Redmond. The Brothers are gearing up for the 2016 year with election of new officers in November. The Brotherhood will also plan on contributing to the Bill Howe/Sandy Derby Memorial Fund for our children s playground. Prayer Shawl Ministry For many years, shawls have symbolized comfort, peace, warmth and serenity. The modern Prayer Shawl Ministry, which began in 1998, as a grass-roots movement quickly grew into a world-wide ecumenical endeavor with numerous shawls being given to grateful recipients all over the world. We feel privileged to be a part of this movement and enjoy our time of fellowship, when we meet each month in Canterbury Hall on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. We have several shawls in inventory. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer Nave. They are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. For shawls given outside the congregation, a donation by the giver to replenish our yarn supply is appreciated, but not required. Our next meeting will be Saturday, October 10 th with breakfast goodies in abundance. 14

Family BBQ This year s Family BBQ was a huge success with over 140 in attendance. It looks like we raised $2,130 through generous contributions of the chicken, raffle gifts, dinner and everyone having a few beverages. Thanks to all (you know who you are) who gave of their time and talents to make this a huge hit. Fun! Fun! Fun! 15 Vol. 5 No. 10 St. Augustine Episcopal Church ~ Rocklin, CA October 2015

After you have read his tour of God s house, close your eyes and take a walk through yourself. It is a beautiful image. God welcomes us home. We do not need to be shy. He invites us into the living room of his heart, where we can put on old slippers and share freely. He invites us into the kitchen of his friendship, where chatter and batter mix in good fun. He invites us into the dining room of his strength, where we can feast to our heart s delight. He invites us into the study of his wisdom, where we can learn and grow and stretch...and ask all the questions we want. He invites us into the workshop of his creativity, where we can be co-laborers with him, working together to determine the outcome of events. He invites us into the bedroom of his rest, where new peace is found and where we can be naked, vulnerable and free. It is also the place of deepest intimacy, where we know and are known to the fullest. After walking slowly through the rooms, one is moved to say Thank you, dear Lord, for keeping the lights on and the doors open. Amen, Carole Peterson October 28 Dave Thomas & Jeanne Rochelle 16
