2 From the Pastor Time to reflect Summer time is supposed to be vacation time, right? Time to slow down, kick back, get refreshed? How s that going for everyone? Instead it may be turning into a time of traveling, hosting guests, catching up on projects and chores. Everything but rest and relaxation! I hope we can all stop ourselves for just a bit and make a commitment to slow down. Part of our vacationing and resting and finding refreshment will come when we take time to reflect on God s hand in our lives and on God s great love for us. Even in the midst of the challenges of life and in the midst of life changes, God and God s love are with us. Even when life feels frantic and overly full, we can find the rest we long for when we take those few moments to slow down and reflect. A moment of prayer, a moment of simple breathing, a moment of song these may be just the thing to gently nudge away the tension of our busyness. Slow down, gather for worship, look around you at God s amazing creation. Reflect on God s love. Let it surround you and fill you. You will find rest. 5 Called to Build...IT S A NEW DAY! Ending June 30, The Called to Build Capital Campaign ended June 30th. The goal was to raise $500,000. The final results show a total of $514,559 collected. This Campaign has given St. Augustine Church the gift of sacred space, our new Church building. New families come through our doors each Sunday. The Sunday School and Youth programs continue to thrive. Our beautiful nursery is filled with the sounds of happy toddlers. New voices join our choir to bring us joyful music. Small groups meet regularly, and we are now able to host our own spiritual, outreach and social events. Campaign Goal Campaign Commitments Total Collected to Date $500,000 $523,898 $514,559 Congratulations! Thank you for your contributions to the Called to Build Capital Campaign A NEW DAY HAS DAWNED! 5
6 The Gathering Inn Grocery Cart Ministry Rotating Shelter Program Our Gathering Inn hosting events in June and July were very successful. The rotating shelter event takes place every second Wednesday of the month. The next dinner is August 12 th. We host about 65 women, men and children by providing a substantial hot meal and overnight shelter for our brothers and sisters who are either permanently or temporarily homeless. We need volunteers for the August and September dinners. This would be a great time to explore this wonderful ministry, especially if you are new to St. Augustine. If you haven t signed up yet, pick a month and come and join us. It is very rewarding and does not take a lot of time. The sign-up book is in the rear of the Church in the outreach display. If you have questions, contact Jim Quinney. Gathering Inn Clothing, especially socks, are needed at The Gathering Inn. Small toiletry items are always in need as well. Place them in the grocery cart. The Grocery Cart Ministry has been a wonderful support to the St. James Food Pantry serving the hungry in Lincoln. The need is still high in that area right now. Beans, rice, peanut butter and canned vegetables are great!. St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room The St. Augustine group of volunteers serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal to those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided and no cooking experience is needed. Nursery Volunteers Needed for Wednesday Moms Group Meetings Volunteers are needed for childcare on Wednesday mornings, two or three times a month, from 9-11 a.m. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Melissa Lovin. 6
7 The FISH Youth Group is continuing a summer break through August. Regular meetings will begin in September. The Group will kick-off the year on September 13 th with lunch and a trip to Lake Natomas for paddle boarding and kayaking. They will leave immediately after church. The group will begin meeting Sunday evenings from 6-8 p.m. in the Youth Room. They will begin with dinner together, then their program and close with a short worship service. Dinner will be provided. The first meeting will be September 20 th. With this new meeting time, dinner will be provided. The FISH Leaders are asking for dinner donations. The goal is to provide dinners for the Youth Group and leaders, approximately people. Please contact Carole Geiger (cgeiger@surewest.net) if you are willing to provide a dinner for one of the FISH meetings. Sunday School will continue through August with our current curriculum and schedule. Melissa Lovin, Christian Education Director, is currently reviewing a new curriculum that she hopes we will be able to start in September. More information will be available in the coming weeks. Melissa will hold a teachers meeting near the end of August. If you are interested in this ministry, please see Melissa Lovin (missylovin@gmail.com). We could use several more teachers. Melissa s goal would be to have enough teachers so that they would only teach once every six to eight weeks. By doing this, the teachers could continue to worship on a more regular basis. The nursery is open for infants through children age three. If you are interested in this ministry, please see Melissa Lovin. We could use more people to assist Shelby or substitute for Shelby when she is off. God has the power to... Provide ~ Comfort ~ Heal ~ Forgive 7

11 Women s Retreat: The long awaited Women s Retreat is in planning stages. Mark your calendars for Friday, November 6 th - 8 th to save the date. This retreat is geared for the firsttime attendee who may never have tried a retreat before. Our theme is The Friendship of Women and will be led by our own Rev. Maryellen Garnier. Conveniently located at the Mercy Center near Old Town Auburn, the retreat registration fee includes a private room and five delicious meals. Cost for the retreat is only $200. There are only a few spots available. A $50 non-refundable deposit will hold a place for you. For more information, please see Joan Howe or Maryellen Garnier, and pick up a registration flyer on the Welcome Counter. Meal Train Ministry Barbara Woolman is taking over the Meal Train Ministry, due to the passing of our dear Sue Zulauf, previous chair. This online calendar organizes delivery of meals for those parish families in times of need. Using this coordinated calendar will avoid duplications of menus and allow volunteers to choose a day that is convenient to take meal. Family food preferences and allergies are listed. Contact Barbara at barbwoolmn@comcast.net and she will get you started. 11
12 DOK The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King meets on the second Sunday of each month after the 10 a.m. service. The next meeting will be August 9 th in the Sunday School room. If you are interested in becoming a Daughter or would like more information, please contact Deidre Shonk, Chapter President. Congratulations! Deidre Montoya Shonk participated in the AVON39 Walk July 11 th and 12 th. The course began at San Francisco s Fort Mason, not far from the Presidio, went by Fishermen's Wharf and up through China Town, passed by the Presidio and over the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Baker for lunch, which was half way at 13.1 miles. The walkers finished the day at Corte Madera. Deidre was able to complete seven of the 39-mile walk. Prayer Shawl Ministry This month Pastor Liz blessed 14 shawls knitted or crocheted by Ginny Dearing, Marlene Harner, Sue Hunnell, Pricilla Kriner and her daughter Tina Ortogero, Dottie Neil, Janice Stenzel and Greer Nave. We feel privileged to be a part of this movement. The group enjoys the time of fellowship when it meets the second Monday of each month in Canterbury Hall at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. For more information, contact Greer Nave. We have several shawls in inventory. If you would like to give one to someone who is not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer Nave. They are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. For shawls given outside the congregation, a donation by the giver to replenish our yarn supply is appreciated, but not required. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast are served. The next meeting will be Saturday, August 8th. All men and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Rob Shonk is the Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob or Vice Director John Redmond. 12

16 Eucharistic Visitor Ministry The Eucharistic Visitor s Ministry at St. Augustine serves members of the congregation who are unable to attend regular Sunday services for an extended period of time. The visitors administer communion to those individuals in their home, hospital or care facility. If you are interested in serving in this Ministry, please contact Bill Howe or Pastor Liz. Companion s Corner HASIDIC WISDOM The Jewish faith is known for pithy, brief sayings that impart wisdom. One that I read recently is The community of the living is the carriage of the Lord. We, as a group, provide transportation of the Lord s works from place to place and out into the world and community. Our diversity and differences make for a brightly colored chariot, one that is capable of carrying the gifts of God to others and that transports us to new places and heights in our personal faith journeys. So step up and step in, folks! It will be an exciting and worthwhile ride. July & August blessings, dear friends, In Loving Memory Carole Peterson Sue Ann McKay Zulauf February 9, 1940 ~ June 25,
