From the Pastor forward in faith That is a phrase you will hear quite a bit in the next few months as we roll out our capital campaign. But the phrase has deep meanings and connections beyond being a tag line for our campaign. Faith is our heartbeat as we walk together, navigating our complicated lives and growing in our understanding of God s call for us. Our trust in God s loving care for us grows as we move forward, our faith grows, our hope grows. God can give us new eyes to see the world around us, seeing with deepening compassion for others and for ourselves. We can give each other strength to resist getting stuck in our struggles, strength to keep moving forward, hand in hand. We will be talking about money and giving and stewardship (again!) from a spiritual perspective. All of that may be challenging and uncomfortable at times. Know that you are not alone in those feelings! God is in our midst, though, and we are moving forward. St. Augustine Church is moving forward discovering what God is up to in our community and in the world and discovering what God is calling us to do and to be. We are never alone in our journey. Our struggles can be shared. The conscious pooling of our gifts and abilities creates a mighty force for good in a world that is often without hope. May God s love bind us together. May we commit ourselves to our calling. Together we are moving forward in faith! 6 Study Options "Lent for Everyone: Mark, Year B" provides readers with a gentle guide through the Lenten season, from Ash Wednesday through the week after Easter. Popular biblical scholar and author, N. T. Wright, provides his own Scripture translation, brief reflection and a prayer for each of the days of the season, helping the reader ponder how the text is relevant to their own life today. Wright's guide through Lent will make the Bible--and the season--come alive in inspiring new ways. 7 St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room Volunteers Needed The St. Augustine group serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., helping to prepare, cook and serve those in need of a warm meal. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided and no cooking experience is needed. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this simple but necessary outreach! You will leave with a full heart! Please contact Gaby Sisk, if you are interested in working in this important ministry. The team is in need of more volunteers! Columbarium Coming in 2015 We have 16 folks who have expressed interest in reserving niches in our first columbarium installation. We will place our order in early 2015 and anticipate having that first set of 24 niches in place by early summer. Those who have expressed interest will be contacted to finalize payment and paperwork to secure niches. Each niche will accommodate one set of cremains and the $750 fee per niche covers the reserved niche space, the required urn, the engraved plate and perpetual care. If you have questions or would like to secure a niche, please contact our Columbarium Committee members, Kathy Dillon and Rick Stenzel. 7

forward in faith...capital Campaign #2!! We have begun planning our next capital campaign, forward in faith! This campaign is different from our operating budget stewardship drive held in November. The operating budget pledges offered every fall, cover the cost of salaries, programs and other ongoing costs. The goal of this capital campaign is to raise $400,000. The focus will be on debt management related to our Diocesan loan and our mortgage payments. This will help us to reduce the principal on our $1.5 million loan before it is amortized into a 20-year loan in May I know it seems unlikely, but our past experience tells us that this campaign will be an inspiring time with wonderful sharing of our hopes, dreams and vision for St. Augustine. More information will come your way in the next months...stay tuned! Pastor Liz+ Ministry Fair ~ Faith Connections The St. Augustine Ministry Fair is scheduled for Sunday, April 19th during the coffee hour. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about our different ministries and discover where your talents and gifts may lead you to serve in God s Church. Author Forum A Conversation with Flora Slosson Wuellner has been changed to Sunday, March 22nd from 3-4:30 p.m. She is an ordained United Church of Christ Minister, a retired seminary teacher and the author of numerous books on spiritual renewal and inner healing. 8

Journey of a seminarian... Dear St. Augustine Family, Hello St. Augustine! I miss y'all and hope to bring a group of young adults over for the Stop Hunger Now food packing event in March, which will be here before we know it! I will begin my last semester of seminary in February! I am very excited to begin and I am looking forward to my classes and my last months on campus. As the student Ombudsperson for the Board of Trustees at CDSP, I will attend the February board meeting which I am looking forward to! I continue to serve as deacon at St. John's every Sunday and am still having a great time with them. I'm sure I'll have more interesting news to share in the next article as the semester gets going! Where Moms Connect will meet Thursdays, February 5th and February 19th. Our topics this month are The Mystery of Autism and How to Live Before I Die. The group meets at 7:30-9:15 p.m. in the Sunday School classroom. Childcare is available. Where Moms Connect is a place to find support and encouragement. You will enjoy meaningful conversation, laughter and friendship as you are supported in your journey through momhood. All moms are welcome. We have moms of infants through teenagers! Bring a friend - the more the merrier! If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Lovin at: wheremomsconnect@gmail.com. Love, Sarah MMCA Volunteers In Loving Memory If you are interested in volunteering at the Maria Montessori Charter Academy (MMCA), our neighborhood school, please contact Rhonda Wampler. There are many opportunities for a variety of ways to serve the children at MMCA beginning in January. 10 The Mom Conference Saturday, February 28th 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Spend a day celebrating the joy of being a mom, say co-chairs Melissa Lovin and Kara Diaz. The Mom Conference is a place for you to develop and gain new insights into women s empowerment, discipline and relations. Are you leaving a legacy or a mess? is another discussion topic, along with fitness and natural remedies. The Second Annual Mom Conference will be held Sunday, February 28 at St. Augustine. There will be four guest speakers on topics ranging from fitness to relationships to leaving legacies! The cost is $49 and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, snacks and a few surprises! What a great gift for the young moms in your family. You can order the tickets online at: If you would like to write a check, please contact Melissa Lovin for directions. The Moms Group will be starting a new outreach program through the conference. Kara and Melissa have connected with Sole Hope, an agency that helps people in impoverished countries and one mission is to provide shoes to help prevent diseases in the feet caused by jiggers. Jiggers are small fleas that are found in the dust and dirt and burrow into the surface of the skin, usually the feet and cause painful wounds. Melissa and Kara are asking conference attendees to donate their old denim. In March, The Moms Group will have a shoe cutting party. The shoe pieces will be shipped to Africa and assembled by workers there, so that the people can have closed shoes to protect their feet. Kara and Melissa are very excited to give The Moms Group the ability to do a service project that will benefit other children. If you have questions regarding the conference, please contact Melissa or Kara. 10

DOK The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King meets on the second Sunday of each month after the 10 a.m. service. The next meeting will be February 8th in the Sunday School room. The group will continue a study on Anne Lamott s book, Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers. Please consider joining the Daughters for this interesting discussion. If you are interested in becoming a Daughter or would like more information, please contact Deidre Shonk, Chapter President. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast is served. All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Rob Shonk is the Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob or Vice Director John Redmond. The Brothers are planning to assist the FISH group with the Shrove Supper February 17 th. The group is also planning a BBQ after church June 7 th, and is working on plans for a church-wide men s retreat later this year. Our next meeting will be Saturday, February 14th with John Redmond preparing his famous Woodsman Iron Skillet breakfast. Prayer Shawl Ministry Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayers. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress. We have a lovely time of fellowship when we meet each month in Canterbury Hall on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. Please contact Greer Nave. In Loving Memory Dorothy LeFevre Branch October 9, 1922 ~ December 12,

FISH UPDATE The FISH Youth Group will be very busy in February and March. The group will work with members of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew to host the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, February 17th. In March, FISH members will assist with the Stop Hunger food packing event. They will also continue to meet Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in the Youth Room for regular study, Journey to Adulthood. Jim Quinney, Theresa Stenzel and Gaby Sisk are the FISH Group leaders. In February, the children will continue their study of Jesus' ministry. We will begin the month with a Music Sunday, led by Rob Shonk. The children will learn about the many people that Jesus healed and some of the miracles that Jesus performed. We will also talk about how the people had a difficult time understanding who Jesus was and what He was telling them. Our teachers for the month of February are Rob Shonk, Martha Kennedy, Kara Diaz, Kathy Griffin, and Kristie Fischer. Shelby Larkey and Madison Lovin will teach our nursery-aged children. Introducing our New Children s Ministry Coordinator Please welcome Melissa Lovin our new Children s Ministry Coordinator. She will officially begin her duties March 1, 2015, but is already hard at work gathering information about the Sunday School Program. Melissa and her family, husband Rick and daughters Meagan and Madison, have been active members of St. Augustine for over 13 years. Her parents Bill and Marcia Rush also attend St. Augustine. Melissa comes to this position with a wealth of experience in day care, Girl Scouts and teaching Sunday School. Her most recent position was Parish Administrator at St. Michael s in Carmichael. 14 Save the Dates!!! Stop Hunger Now! St. Augustine will be hosting a meal-packing event Friday night March 6th, and Saturday, March 7th. The goal is to raise $10,000, which represents 40,000 meals. Registration forms are available on the Church website or at the Welcome Counter. Please complete and turn in to the Church office. Our gratitude shows in the smiles and chuckles as we remember those child raising years...the embarrassment as a three year old stood up in an old wooden pew and shouted loudly as the communion wafers were held aloft Hey! I want some of that pizza too. And as more and more babies and young children arrive and we hear the sound of children in our sanctuary, we say Thank you, God. At last, at last!
