2 From the Pastor We are at the midpoint of our 2017 Summer Sabbatical of Reflection, Renewal and Refreshment. We have begun a time of collective reflection as our Parish History team researches 25 years in the life of St. Augustine; they have presented the first three of six History Moments, and we will continue to learn about the development of this congregation through more recollections of those who were there to witness events that have shaped St. Augustine. At an individual level, a set of interview questions was offered to serve as a guide in exploring our personal Living Histories, providing a way to start a conversation with our families and inspire reflection into life events and influences. The Living Room Conversations have provided us with a way to come together and get to know each other in more meaningful ways. Participants practiced being open and curious about all perspectives of challenging topics with a focus on learning and listening. The next LRC will be held on July 24 th. We have heard two of four guest preachers, who graciously engaged with the congregation after their sermons so we could learn more about the process of formulating and delivering a sermon. We will also have the opportunity, through each of these preachers, to learn about activities in the wider church community. Thanks to our dedicated youth and adult volunteers, the Vacation Bible School was an amazing experience, revealing the things children can teach us about God. The VBS Sunday liturgy was led by the children and refreshed us with laughter and joy, making us aware of the ways in which children can lead the way for us to see with an enlivened vision, the present and future of the church. I am blessed to walk alongside you as we experience a time of reflection, renewal and refreshment. 3 forward in faith Service Times 8 a.m. Sunday Service The early service begins at 8 a.m. This is a simple communion service without music, using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship. 10 a.m. Sunday Service The second service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 9:50 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions. The FISH Youth Group meets 6 to 7:45 p.m. for dinner, lessons and worship most Sundays. 5 travelled with five members from St. Augustine (Jim Haiti Mission Trip IQuinney, Kalie Geiger, Christina Dyer, Nolan Eckberg and Reflections Aiden Eckberg) to Haiti in mid-july. We visited Port-au-Prince, Hinche and St. Luc Mission School in Thomassique. After a very long flight, we arrived at the Port-au-Prince airport and headed up the mountain to Hinche, our home for the next three days. I had arrived a few days earlier. After leaving the hustle and bustle of the city of five million residents, we enjoyed the beauty of rural Haiti. The rooms at the St. Andre s rectory were complete with mosquito netting and much-needed fans. But it was still very hot and humid. At 5 a.m. Sunday morning, the church bells accompanied with roosters crowing made sure all would be dressed for 6 a.m. mass at St. Andre s in Hinche. Next, we made the 90-minute trip back to Mirebalais for another service that included a visit from the Bishop of Haiti. The three-and-ahalf-hour service was followed by a lunch of beans and rice, chicken, plantain and spicy pickled salad. After a torrential storm Sunday night, the 18-mile trip to Thomassique was quite muddy and took nearly 90 minutes. The classroom church was packed since the priest only gets to St. Luc s about four times a year. It was a very joyous occasion followed by another lunch of beans, rice and chicken. The St. Augustine team worked on the solar project all afternoon with local assistance assembling and installing four panels to provide light in the school which lacks electricity. The water filter units we installed last year are providing good water. We ended our trip in Port-au-Prince with visits to St. Pierre School, St. Vincent s Center for the Handicapped and a tour of the Haitian National Museum. We enjoyed a local hotel with good showers and air-conditioning before heading home the next day. This was one of the best trips I have taken to Haiti. We accomplished our goal of installing solar panels at St. Luc. This school has no electricity and no running water. In the past year we have been able to help provide clean, filtered drinking water, uniforms, hot lunches and now lighting. 6 Haiti Mission Trip ~ Reflections It is easy to talk about the things we did in Haiti with our partners at St. Luc School. I can tell you with certainty that they are the beneficiaries, but we gain substantially more. This is a portion of my journal from the trip. The first night in Haiti at bedtime. Very hot and the conditions at the rectory (St. Andre s in Hinche ) were pretty bad. After trying to make the boys (Nolan and Aidan) as comfortable as possible with air flow and mosquito nets, I laid down in my bed listening to the rhythms of Hinche at 10 p.m. I was struck by how uncomfortable I felt and had not experienced this level of discomfort in a very long time. I practiced deep breathing and lay as still as possible. Within minutes, I began to pray in thanksgiving for this opportunity to feel the way so many brothers and sisters feel, especially when they are uprooted from their homes. The Gathering Inn clients who sleep in a church on a hard floor no longer in whatever they called home. No regular bathroom or toilet, no space, no quiet place to be by themselves. I then started to thank God for allowing me to feel this, to experience this, as it helps me to look inward at my own spiritual poverty. My lack of caring at times, my self centeredness and self-serving ways, my gluttony. This trip to Haiti has opened my mind and heart. Despite all of the poverty and hardships, people fill the country with love and laughter; that will always amaze me. I experienced living without my pleasurable amenities like flushing toilets or nice warm showers and saw true poverty through my own eyes, but found that the people who live in these conditions each day don t care as much about the material items. Their everyday lives are built around relations with people rather than a TV or phone screen. People are found outside dancing to music with friends or with the church choir practicing for Sunday s performance. I feel we could all learn something from their sense of community. I encourage everyone to travel and keep an open mind in a new world. It is good to see and be reminded of both the differences and similarities of our cultures. 7 Haiti Mission Trip ~ Reflections Haiti had beautiful people, it was a great experience, and I am very glad that I went. Aidan Ekberg Haiti was interesting. The people were the nicest people you ll ever meet. I learned how we all should be very grateful for what we have and that there are many other places in the world that don t have what we have. Nolan Ekberg Haitians seem to be very proud people who take great pride in their appearance and their personal presentation. The natural beauty of the island itself is magnificent, which is in sharp contrast to the man-made infrastructure issues that are all over the country. The most stark problems are the lack of trash disposal, effective sanitation and clean water. It made me appreciate our government and how we make this a basic right to live in a healthy and safe environment. This was my first trip to Haiti. I have been to other developing countries in the past, and understand the many needs, but I wanted to see St. Luc first hand and learn about our partnership with them. I am glad that I went so I could understand some of the needs of the people. Besides the basic needs mentioned above, we have an opportunity to give some of the youth in the country a chance at a better quality of life. I am happy to see our funds being utilized to meet the needs of these kind and wonderful people. Christina Dyer Putting together the solar panels. 12 Sabbatical 2017 Plans for the Congregation Lunch with Pastor Maryellen, Associate Priest Join Pastor Maryellen at noon for an informal, unrehearsed and fun time of conversation. No program, no agenda, no reservations required. Just bring your lunch to Canterbury Hall, and Maryellen will provide a homemade dessert. The last date for lunch is noon on Wednesday, July 19 th. Sign up at the Welcome Center. The vision of Living Room Conversations is a world in which people with fundamental differences of opinion and backgrounds can work together with respect and even joy to realize the vibrant future we all desire. In a typical conversation, a group of six people will come together to get to know one another in a more meaningful way. It is a workshop of people with opinions but with no debate, no right or wrong - just people trying to understand one another. Guided by a simple and sociable format, participants practice being open and curious about all perspectives, with a focus on learning from one another, rather than trying to debate a chosen topic. This format provides a safe nonpartisan way to discuss topics that are important to us. The last Conversations will be held Monday, July 24 th at 7 p.m.. Please sign up at the Welcome Center. You may attend any or all sessions. A Look Back at Our Collective History Throughout the summer months, we have been reflecting on our journey as a Church over the past 25 years. How was the Church formed? Who were the early advocates for ministry in our community? What inspired them to move their locations many times before coming to the current site? What were the risks and benefits which led them to build our current Church home? Church members have presented History Moments to highlight each location of the Church. Rich Wampler shared his memories of the Loomis Elementary School gymnasium; Ken Cichocki, his memories of the Anthony Court location; and Joan Cavanagh spoke of the time at Granite Drive. In August, Rick Stenzel, Steve Mershon and Jim Tilton will highlight our moves to Cincinnati Drive, MMCA and finally, the move to this sacred space, our First Church. Be sure to take a look at the posters hanging in Canterbury Hall. Each poster captures the life and times spent at each location, including a view of the current events. 12

The format consists of a sermon, followed by a time during which the congregation can engage with the preacher by asking questions or presenting observations. 14 The Gathering Inn Overnight Shelter Program Grocery Cart Ministry Gathering Inn Hosting Dinner We will be hosting our next Gathering Inn guests Wednesdays, July 12 th and August 9 th. More than 70 men, women and children enjoy a delicious hot meal and a warm and safe place to sleep. We always need kitchen help, servers, set-up and clean-up volunteers. Families are welcome to help. There are five or six different tasks (setting tables, preparing salad and bread, greeting the guests, serving, cleaning up, etc.) that need to be performed throughout the late afternoon and evening. There is a sign-up sheet at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. We host the Gathering Inn folks the second Wednesday of each month. Food Donations For the months of July and August, we will focus on beans, rice, canned tuna or chicken and cereal. Pick up a few boxes for the St. James Food Pantry, which supports folks in Lincoln. Salad dressings are always welcome, too. Each time you grocery shop, consider adding a few extra items to bring to Church for our Grocery Cart Ministry. Your donations are appreciated! The Gathering Inn Donations Volunteers Needed!!! Meal Train Ministry The Meal Train Ministry is an online calendar that organizes delivery of meals for parish families in times of need. Barbara Woolman is in charge of the Meal Train Ministry. If you are interested in providing meals for parish families, please contact: barbwoolmn@comcast.net or We had a bubbly outpouring of help. Thanks to everyone who has responded with laundry detergent for The Gathering Inn. Keep it coming! They say they are literally always in need of detergent. Adult jeans and socks are also in demand. As always, toiletry items are needed. Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. 14

You do not need to be a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew to attend. We are putting together a dynamic group of speakers. The Very Rev. Doctor Brian Baker, Dean of Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, will speak about How to be Engaged in the Struggle for Justice. Our own Bob Deering will speak about What Can We Do About Human Trafficking in our Communities? Human trafficking is the second largest criminal activity after drug trafficking and is a major problem in Northern California. The Rev. David England, retired St. Paul's, Oroville, will speak about the Cursillo Ministry. The Reverends Stephen Leonetti (retired St. Luke s, Woodland) and Susan Reeve (St. Brigid Kildare, Rio Vista), will speak about the Kairos Prison Ministry. Tom Martin, Vice President, National Brotherhood of St. Andrew, will speak about What Does it Mean to be a Disciple. Jack Hanstein, Senior Vice President, National Brotherhood of St. Andrew, will speak about Why Men s Ministry? The Very Rev. Cliff Haggenjos, Rector, St. John s Episcopal Church Roseville, is the Conference Spiritual Advisor. He will offer the Eucharist at the Conference. Christian men from churches all over Northern California are invited to attend. We hope you can join us. 16 The FISH Youth Group (Friends in Serving Him) is busy planning its fall schedule. Regular meetings will begin Sunday, August 20 th at 6 p.m. Many thanks to the FISH leaders, Tom Gartin and Gaby Sisk. FISH Retreat Back-to-school season is stressful! Youth are invited to a free retreat in Magalia for a weekend of fun and connection August 11 th - 13 th. Please bring your permission slip, a sleeping bag, pillow, clothing items including a sweatshirt/jacket and toiletries. Meet at St. Augustine Friday, August 11 th at 4 p.m. The retreat will end Sunday morning at 8 a.m. FISH Parent Conference Teens are faced with a lot of challenges. The FISH leaders goal is to work together to support the teens as they grow into young adults. Join us for our FISH Parent Conference, Saturday, August 19 th from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn about what is in store for FISH this year and how we all can support our youth. FISH Fall Kickoff The FISH Youth Group is busy planning its fall events. The group meets weekly on Sundays evenings at 6 p.m. The FISH Fall Kickoff is Sunday, August 20 th. The meetings begin at 6 p.m. and include dinner, meeting and youth-led services of compline at 7:30 p.m. All youth in grades 6-12 are welcome to join FISH. Sunday School continues throughout the summer with a modified curriculum. We still do our Bible reading and an activity. In the fall, we will bring back the video component, which the kids really enjoy. Please send your children to the correct classroom when they arrive. We are no longer meeting as a whole group prior to the start of Sunday School. The sign-in sheet is just outside the door of each classroom. We are always looking for additional Sunday School teachers. You are welcome to shadow each class for a day to see how it goes before deciding if this is a ministry for you. Our teachers choose the days they want to teach based on their personal schedules. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions. Please know that you are welcome to bring your child back into the nursery after communion, if you choose. Please let Shelby know if you plan to do this, so she is prepared. Our attendants do take turns for communion, so there is always someone on duty. Shelby Larkey and her attendants do a super job with our youngest Church members. Four youth rotate each week to help Shelby. They are: Madison Lovin, Christopher Buck, Lilly Beckman and Zach Beckman. 16

17 DOK The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King usually meets on the second Sunday of each month after the 10 a.m. service. Guests are welcome. The Daughters will not meet Sunday, August 13 th. The next meeting will be Sunday, September 10 th. The Daughters will be hosting the Fall Assembly for the 19 Chapters in the Diocese on Saturday, November 11 th. The group will participate in a food-packing event for Rise Against Hunger. Jim Quinney will be assisting in the set-up. Or perhaps you would like to learn a new skill and enjoy the company and fellowship of a group of women. Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry knit and crochet prayers shawls for people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life s challenges. We meet the second Monday of each month in Canterbury Hall at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. The Brotherhood members are planning for their annual summer BBQ July 16 th after the 10 a.m. service. We will be teaming up with the FISH Youth Group. The BBQ will be free for parish members, but there will be a tip jar for the FISH Youth Group. They will be raising money serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, salad and drinks. The Brotherhood will be hosting a Christian Men s Ministry Workshop Saturday, September 16 th at the Church. Men s groups from the Diocese will be invited. (See page 15 for further information.) The Brotherhood will meet again Saturday, August 12 th at 9 a.m. Breakfast is served. All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to join us. When his students asked about this, he replied, "I love to go and see all the things I am happy without." Mary, Mary, Mary I found myself paging through the gospels the other day in an effort to discern more about the three women present at the crucifixion. Things became more and more muddled! Only in John 19:25 did I find a definitive list of the three women who were steadfast in that terrible hour...and they were all named Mary. Credit must be given not only to Wikipedia but to Edith Deen s old but valuable book All of The Women of The Bible. In her book it became evident that at least six different women named Mary were mentioned throughout the New Testament. John refers to the three women named Mary as: l. Mary, the mother of Jesus 2. Mary, Mary s sister who was also named Mary 3. Mary Magdalene, leader In this list we have the mother of Jesus, her loyal sister and a woman who was a leader among the women who followed Jesus. Hollywood has portrayed Mary Magdalene as a prostitute, a version not found in any of the gospels. What vastly different women, but with one passion... their love of Jesus. Women who were not afraid to see the cruelty of his death and were unafraid of authorities. They later prepared his body, and Mary Magdalene returned the next morning to visit the tomb...what an experience she had! Mary is still a popular name today, proving the esteem in which it is held. Touching evidence is a planned shelter for homeless families by Amazon in one of their new buildings in Seattle. Its name?
