2 On October 30, 2016 Good Shepherd and St. Andrew s conducted a joint worship service with over 100 in attendance, celebrating Mother Gayle s final service. The liturgy was taken from both the Lutheran and Episcopal prayer books. The spiritual excitement was overwhelming. Many members communicated following the service that our Common Mission is moving forward spiritually with the knowledge that the Lord is with us in all that we do. How are your preparing yourselves for the Church of the future? We are excited about what we ve accomplished over the past two years in our common mission between Good Shepherd Lutheran and St. Andrew s. We look forward to more joint activities going forward. We have moved from two services to one joint service. Our Coordinators in both churches are working together to plan in all areas Worship, Education, Fellowship, Global & Community Outreach, Pastoral Care, and Evangelism & Church Growth. We see that combining our time, talents, and resources allows us to assist the community in more ways. 3 As we migrate into a Common Mission we conduct several types of worship services. Our Sunday services vary depending on the Season and Feast Days. Services sometimes incorporate liturgy and traditions from both Lutheran and Episcopal worship. Other times, we have strictly Lutheran services or Episcopalian services. We also have a once-a-month Healing Service, sponsored by both churches. We have services at one of our Nursing Facilities. In the past few years, we have occasionally had Family Services on Saturday evenings, Contemporary Services, and Evensong Services. How do you practice incorporating others in ministry? There are six general areas at both St. Andrew s and Good Shepherd. These are Worship, Education, Fellowship, Global & Community Outreach, Pastoral Care, and Evangelism & Church Growth. Each area is overseen by Coordinators from each church who are responsible for activities and events in their respective area. We consider the time and talents that our parishioners have to offer and encourage everyone to do what they can to make our church community the best it can be. (For example: One of our home bound parishioners is able to telephone volunteers if we need to prepare a Funeral Meal to be served at church, while another member, a farmer, volunteers to plant and harvest our 10 acres of grain for the Come Grow with Us Project.) We also try to include others from our community to join with us, especially in the area of Outreach. An example of this is our community-wide S.O.C.K.S. Program. (see question 5 below). As a worshipping community, how do you care for your spiritual, emotional and physical well-being? Our Education Area provides several Adult Opportunities throughout the year that focus on spiritual formation. Our parishioners are a close-knit community who provide help to each other, spiritually, emotionally at all times. For example, one parishioner s family was wiped out recently in the flooding in Texas. Both churches joined together to provide financial assistance to help get them back on their feet. Another member is active in Mindfulness Meditation. She has provided free classes for parishioners (also attended by others in our community). Also, our Pastor/Priest has provided individual and small group spiritual direction classes, as needed. Our Lay Eucharistic people and their team visit our home-bound, and our Lunch Bunch group delivers meals to these people as well.

4 How do you engage in pastoral care for those beyond your worshipping community? Our monthly Healing Service is widely advertised and is open to the public. Our Pastor/Priest has provided counseling to people in our community who are not connected to either Good Shepherd or St. Andrew s churches. We have a team that goes to The Signature Health Care facility once a month to hold a worship service. Each April, Good Shepherd and St. Andrew s share a booth at the Community Health Fair (in conjunction with Fayette Co. Memorial Hospital). We pass out newsletters, brochures, chat with visitors who want to share their personal stories, and take prayer requests. Our church community is very active. We support the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund; some of our members have donated to BaptistsonMission.org to assist with the disaster from Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina. We also give to the church in Haiti. In our own region, we support The Well at Sunnyside (an ecumenical group that we share with 30 other local churches) and The S.O.C.K.S. Program which provides new gifts for children at Christmas time. This program is in its 36th year and last year we served over 400 children, giving them 3 gifts apiece. Our Come Grow with Us Program provides monies for The Well and also for the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry (along with the Catholic Church) to assist area people with utility bills, etc. We give monthly to the Fayette County Food Pantry (in a relationship with the First Presbyterian Church). Harvest Express is a program we began several years ago where local farmers may donate a portion of their profit (from selling grain) to our Outreach Area. In 2013, we began a discussion with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church about joint mission and ministry. In 2014, Mother Gayle was unanimously voted in as a shared Pastor/Priest, a position she has held to the present date. 5 What is your practice of stewardship and how does it shape the life of your worshipping community? Stewardship is conducted by a committee during the fourth quarter of the year. The committee members contact church members to encourage them to pledge as they are able to help finance our many ministries, especially our Outreach programs. We are very fortunate that most parishioners are on board for our joint mission and ministry. There are a few in each church, however, who are hesitant and resistant to change. Our Leadership has made it very clear that we are more than willing to listen to input from everyone, take into consideration any concerns and/or ideas that anyone has, and bring them to the discussion table at Vestry or Council meetings. What is your experience leading/addressing change in the church? When has it gone well? When has it gone poorly? And what did you learn? We have found that people are inherently resistant to change. Change occurs best when we are very transparent and communicate frequently with all members. When there is lack of communication or miscommunication, things go poorly. We strive to let people know what s going on in a variety of ways: in newsletters (both electronic and hard copy), on our Facebook Page, on our new Joint Website that we are setting up with Tammie Vanoss, by having Town Hall Meetings quarterly, and by talking face-to-face with individuals during Coffee Minute on Sundays, at joint fellowship events, or when we see them on the street. We have learned that we must move slowly and take people s hearts into account (as well as their minds).
