The Senior Unit Students performed many different Science experiments. In particular the concepts from the experiments were linked to the Heroes theme in Senior Unit learning. Experiments from heroes such as Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton and Archimedes just to name a few were conducted in an engaging, action packed and informative morning in the school courtyard. So to them he addressed this parable. What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbours and says to them, Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep. I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbours and says to them, Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost. In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Saint of the Gutters Mother Teresa of Calcutta ( ) has been declared a saint by Pope Francis on Sunday 4 September. Known as the Saint of the Gutters, Saint Teresa of Calcutta worked for the poorest of the poor in India. She describes herself, By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus. She was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, a city in Balkans. She was the youngest of the children born to Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, and was baptised Gonxha Agnes. First Holy Communion was received at the age of five and a half and she was confirmed in November It is noted how from the day of her First Holy Communion, Gonxha had a love for souls within her. Her father s sudden death when Gonxha was about 8 years old left the family in financial difficulties. Drane raised her children firmly and lovingly, and greatly influencing her daughter s character and vocation. Gonxha s religious formation was further assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was much involved. At the age of eighteen Gonxha left her home in September 1928 to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. There she received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Then on 10 September 1946 during the train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling for her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received call within a call. Over the next weeks and months, Jesus revealed to her the desire of His heart for victims of love who would radiate His love on souls. Come be My light, He begged her. I cannot go alone. Jesus revealed His pain at the neglect of the poor, His sorrow at their ignorance of Him and His longing for their love. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. On August 17, 1948, she dressed for the first time in a white, blue-bordered sari and passed through the gates of her beloved Loreto convent to enter the world of the poor. She is now a Saint. 3 NEWS FROM AROUND OUR SCHOOL.. Week 7 Term 3 New trees planted on the oval: We have planted several Manchurian Pear Trees along the fence line and near the playground for additional shade for our students and a home for various birdlife. School Hats: Students are expected to wear hats during play time and when they are outside for extended periods of time. During the winter months students were not expected to wear hats and now that we have entered the season of Spring and warmer weather is approaching, hats must be worn. School Banking: Thank you to the families who support this program. Not only are you helping your child/ren learn about saving you are also helping the school. Thank you, too, to the parent volunteers who regularly coordinate this program. Sonia Brown, Vivian Chu and Lucy Panozzo. School Photo Day Tuesday 20 th September : Information regarding school photos has been sent home today. Please return your photo order and money in a clearly named and sealed envelope to class teachers by Friday 16 th September. This year we are returning to group photos and so if your child is absent on photo day they will not be included in the photo. PARISH CAR PARK: You will notice there are cones placed in the driveway of the car park in the morning and afternoon. Please remember these are critical times, when PAVING HELP Do you know someone who can help us with a small paving job near our shed? Please advise Kos through our Office. students are arriving or leaving school and their safety is our prime concern. We have had to take these measures as there are some parents/caregivers who continue to use the car park as a drop off and pick up area. Canteen News Pizza Day Special On Wednesday September 14 the canteen will be having a Pizza Day. Order forms were sent home in week 6 and must be returned this week. I am looking for a further 2 or 3 helpers from 11.45/12.00 to 12.30/12.40 to help with packing the orders so that we can get them to the classes still warm. If you can help please contact me in the canteen or the girls in the office. Thanks Incorrect Pricing There are still occasions when the incorrect pricing is being used when ordering lunches which can lead to your child not getting all that has been ordered. Please ensure you are using the latest price list to avoid any disappointment. Frozen Fruit Frozen grapes are not available from the canteen at present due to the very high price. Once they are back in season they will be available again. In the meantime frozen watermelon and bananas are still available. Volunteers Wanted If you can help out at any time, part or all of the time between 10.30am and 1.30pm, the more the merrier, please contact the canteen Wednesday to Friday or let the office staff know. Please ensure you have the correct Police Clearance and have completed all necessary courses required to be a volunteer at the school. This information can be obtained from the office. Things that a canteen volunteer could be asked to do include: Making sandwiches and rolls etc., toasting sandwiches, assembling hot dogs, wash and dry dishes, sweep and mop floors, serving the students at recess and lunch and keeping the work benches clean. The children love seeing their mum or dad in the canteen, so come along and put a smile on your child s face. Volunteer Roster There have been some new faces helping in the canteen this term. This is most welcome and greatly appreciated and it has been great getting to know a few more of the school families. 4 SPORT NEWS NETBALL RESULTS Year 6-7 Team With a special appearance from Rayden Olds, the 6/7 girls (and boy) played a sensational game against North Adelaide Primary. They were losing by 10 in the first half to draw the game at 3/4 time. They went down at the end of the game but everyone played their very best and never gave up. Well done. Our captain was Selbee. Carly Omand Year 3-4 Team Game 1/9/16 The girls played a tight game against St Dominic's 3 winning They all played well and their skills and game playing is improving each week. Jemma was our captain this week. 25/8/2016 SJB v Gilles St primary final score I was very proud of the sportsmanship in the way the girls played this game, encouraging the opposition and supporting them. SPORT NEWS SOCCER RESULTS Under 6 Team What an experience this week was as we were defined in the pouring rain to Portside Christian Blue 3 to 1. Our SJB boys played really well under extreme weather conditions, with Ezra scoring an incredible goal. Ezra is the most improved this week, showing great skills every week! Even in the rain, our team showed determination to keep playing, keep up the spirit boys! Vanessa Miglis & David Gentile Under 8 Team Another exciting game this week winning 1-0 to Star of the Sea. It was great to see the whole team working together to score their goal and back in defence, special mention to Jack and Georgia for their extra efforts. Ken Wilson Under 9 Team SJB 7 Grange Blue 0 What a great result for our under 9's. They have come a long way and surprise us every time. Their ball skills and team work has really improved week by week and it's always a joy watching them play. Well done to Christian R. for scoring 3 goals and especially one from a free kick! Goal scores were also Michael L. and Dante. I must mention our defenders Cooper, Archie and Issac that held back and stopped everything coming their way! Well done guys, great effort! 5 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students, Staff and Friends of St John Bosco School, On Sunday, not only was it a special day for fathers and grandfathers, it was a very special day in the life of the Catholic Church as Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun who devoted her life to helping the poor in India, was declared a Saint and canonized by Pope Francis. She was an ordinary woman who did extraordinary things in her life time. God calls us to do the same in our everyday interactions with one another. On Monday the staff gathered together to learn about Christian Meditation and Mindfulness lead by a group of teachers undertaking additional learning in this area. These Teachers have also introduced the practice of meditation with their students. Through the lens of Christian Mediation, we make connection with God and something beyond our understanding. It is in this context that our students are learning the practice of meditation, a time to invite God into their hearts and minds. Current research informs us that students who practice mindfulness experience better wellbeing. Later that afternoon, Teresa Hudson, Religious Education Consultant from the Catholic Education Office led a workshop in Made in the Image of God, MITIOG. Her work centred on the teaching of the Being Sexual Strand that all teachers will cover in the next few weeks. Your child/ren will come home this term talking about their learning in their classes and I encourage you to engage with them in their questions and wonders.
