3 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 MARCH 3, 2019 Our Parish Our Diocese Go Deeper This Lent Dear Friends in Christ, Community Prayer: The Sorrowful Mysteries We will each pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary one more time per week than we already do. There are several ways we can do this: 1. Pray in the sanctuary half an hour before weekend Masses, or at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays in the chapel 2. In a parish group you attend, take 15 minutes out of every meeting to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries 3. Pray on your own at a time that is convenient for you Community Lenten Practices Together, we will engage in these acts of devotion: Fast, abstain from eating meat, and attend the liturgy on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday Abstain from eating meat on all Fridays Pray the Stations of the Cross on Fridays (at the parish or alone) Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once To learn more about optional additional Lenten practices, events and devotions for Lent and Holy Week, and FORMED resources, go to and attend the Mardi Gras Ministry Fair after both Masses on March 3. The Light Is On for You: An Evening of Penance Wednesday, March 27, 5-8 p.m. As we begin the season of Lent, the Diocese of Grand Rapids will once again offer a special opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. The Light Is On for You will take place in almost every parish of the diocese, including Our Lady of the Lake. Visit GRdiocese.org/penance for details. Lent is the Church s great spiritual renewal. Characterized by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, it is a call to conversion and a time to refocus on the call to love our neighbor. We need not look far to see the suffering of those in our local communities, but we must also remember those who suffer throughout the world. As we encounter the suffering of others we draw closer to Christ, seeking his face in the poor and marginalized, the isolated and lonely, and sharing his healing love with them. Seeing others through the gaze of Christ, we begin to recognize our neighbor and stranger as our brother or sister in the human family. The annual CRS Rice Bowl campaign is Catholic Relief Services Lenten faith-in-action program. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we hear stories from our brothers and sisters in need, and devote our Lenten prayers, fasting, and gifts to changing the lives of the poor globally and in our own backyard. In prayer, we encounter Christ; through fasting, we confront our own obstacles and experience in a small way how it feels to go without; and through almsgiving we ask what we can give up so that others might have life to the fullest. Last year, because of your Lenten sacrifices and those of Catholics around the world, CRS Rice Bowl raised close to six million dollars. Approximately two million dollars was retained by dioceses in the United States to help alleviate hunger and poverty locally. The funds in our diocese were used to support programs such as Dégagé Ministries Wellness Food Program, St. Alphonsus Food Pantry Project, Community Food Club of Grand Rapids Local Produce Expansion, and St. Ann s Senior Services in Baldwin. I encourage you to take part in the CRS Rice Bowl program this year. Practical resources to help your family experience a profoundly rich Lent include devotions and prayers, simple recipes, a CRS Rice Bowl app, and the signature CRS Rice Bowl box for your home where you can collect loose change and bills. As we journey through the forty days of Lent, may we see the face of Christ in others and let Christ s love shine forth in word and deed. Thank you for your Lenten sacrifices, which allow CRS Rice Bowl to be successful. Go to crsricebowl.org to access resources online. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids
4 OUR LADY OF THE LAKE PAGE 4 HOLLAND, MICHIGAN Music and Liturgy Ash Wednesday March 6 We begin the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, a time for public penance. On this day, Catholics are required to abstain from eating meat and to fast (one full meal and two small snacks are permitted). At the Ash Wednesday liturgy, the faithful receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. This is a sign of repentance and a reminder of our sinfulness and mortality. The ashes are made by burning the palms from the previous year s Palm Sunday procession. Community Life Wanted: Rosary Leaders During Lent, our parish will focus on praying the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary as a community. That means that we need more parishioners who are willing to lead the prayers before weekend Masses, on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., and on liturgical occasions that are related to the Rosary. If you have a devotion to the Rosary and are comfortable leading others in prayer, please contact Cory Lakatos at clakatos@oll.org or ext Men s Study: The Rise and Fall of Ancient Israel Thursdays at 7 p.m. Beginning March 7 The men s evening Bible study will soon begin a new, in-depth study of the books of Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Amos, Hosea, and Jeremiah in the light of the Catechism and the Church Fathers. The study guide costs $25. If you want a copy, contact Steve Redmond ASAP at steveredmond12@yahoo.com or This study meets in the parish library. Men s Apologetics Guild: The End Times Saturday, March 9 from 8-10 a.m. What does the Catholic Church teach about the Second Coming, the Rapture, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, and Indulgences? Find out at our next meeting in the parish library. All men are welcome. If you want to purchase the study guide, contact Steve Redmond at steveredmond12@yahoo.com or Discipleship Journey with Our Catechumens and Candidates Save the Date: Sunday, March 10 Our next RCIA session is set for Sunday, March 10, at 8 a.m. in the AB Room. We will meet in the AB Room to go over information on visiting parishioners in their homes, nursing homes, and the hospital. Wanted: Marriage Preparation Sponsor Couples Do you have wisdom to share from your marriage? We are looking for married couples in the parish to become marriage preparation sponsor couples. Carla Niziolek at cniziolek@oll.org or Chris Grote at cgrote@oll.org if this is something you and your spouse are interested in. Thank you! Parish Nurse Notes: Ways to Be a Better Dad Respect your children s mother: When children see their parents respecting each other, they are more likely to feel that they are also accepted and respected. Spend time with your children: Treasuring children often means sacrificing other things, but it is vital. Earn the right to be heard: Begin talking with your kids when they are young so that difficult subjects will be easier to handle as they get older. Discipline with love: All children need guidance and discipline to set reasonable limits. Fathers who discipline in a calm, fair manner show love for their children. Be a role model: Girls with loving fathers grow up knowing they deserve to be treated with respect by boys. Fathers can teach sons what is important by demonstrating honesty, humility, and responsibility. Be a teacher: A father who teaches his children about right and wrong will see his children make good choices. Eat together as a family: Sharing a meal together provides structure in a busy day and gives kids the chance to talk about what they are doing and want to do. Read to your children: Begin when they are very young. Later, encourage them to read on their own. This helps to ensure they will have a lifetime of personal growth. Show affection: Children need the security that comes from knowing they are wanted and loved by their family. Realize that a father s job is never done: Even after children are grown and ready to leave home, they will still look to their fathers for wisdom and advice. The National Fatherhood Initiative is committed to helping improve the lives of children by encouraging fathers to be involved, responsible, and committed. (fatherhood.org)

Many of us in our Lakeshore Catholic community form special bonds as we connect through Mass, discipleship, and school. Although the two parishes and the shared school have their unique identities, we are all joined by the love of God and our desire to deepen our Christian calling. As parishioners, we are encouraged and inspired by our parish priests and our educational leaders. They encourage us to search our hearts and souls for the passion to serve our local Catholic community. The desire to grow as individuals and serve others is rooted in Catholic teaching. The Corpus Christi Foundation was founded with this desire and continues to be committed to the healthy longevity of the parishes and school. Fulfilling this commitment is made possible through generous support from all of us. We are all called to help and can strive together to nurture our faith. We think of philanthropists as someone who donates big sums of money, yet the word literally means love of humankind. All of us are capable of being philanthropists.
