We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic, please contact George Peko ext. 107 or at psr@saintpaschal.com. PARISH ACTIVITIES EPIPHANY HOUSE BLESSING: The Church has a custom of blessing homes during the week of the Feast of the Epiphany. Family and friends gather to mark their doors with chalk and to ask God s blessing on their homes and on those who live there or visit. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. The ARISE groups have prepared an Epiphany Blessing Kit complete with simple instructions - for each family in our parish. These kits will be blessed and distributed at each Mass the weekend of January 2-3. Chalking the door is a way to celebrate Epiphany and God s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does, we let the meaning of the symbols written on our doors sink into the depths of our hearts and be manifested in our words and actions.

6 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Week 4 of Advent: In this 4 th Week of Advent, our Sunday reading reminds us of the hospitality and care that Mary gave Elizabeth in the midst of their news. They both had unexpected pregnancies, both had unexpected great gifts given to them, yet trusted that God s will would be fulfilled in the midst of the craziness of their age. They remind us of the trust we are called to live in our own craziness of our world and our own life. They provide a model of joy, hospitality and care that we are to have for each other as we give the gift of Christ to one another during these holiday seasons. Let your Advent, Christmas and New Year be filled with much joy as you bring the gift of Christ to others. Merry Christmas! Several of our parishioners go to visit family during this week. We pray for your safety and travel. On behalf of the Blessed Sacrament Community (SSS), the Pastoral Staff and the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND), we wish you a blessed Christmas. Epiphany Blessing of Homes: This year, our small group participants in Arise, (our several week program to deepen faith and get to know new parishioners), have provided a blessing of homes. Traditionally, Epiphany (in the USA Sunday, January 3, 2016) has been the day when we would bless our homes and write, with blessed chalk, above the door posts the year and C + M + B. I thank the small group leaders of Arise for gathering chalk and providing it in the narthex. Beginning the weekend of the Epiphany, you may write 20 + C + M + B + 16 on your door posts and use the following ritual as a family (adapted from the Catholic Book of Household Blessings & Prayers, second edition): Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace. Blessed be God forever! (All respond: Blessed be God forever!) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ s light and love. Read: Luke 19: 1 9 from the Bible. Intercessions: The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him (response is Stay with us, LORD ). o LORD Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: Stay with us, LORD. o LORD Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: Stay with us, LORD. o LORD Jesus Christ, the three magi present their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray: Stay with us, LORD. o LORD Jesus Christ, you gave us our parish family of Saint Paschal Baylon, bless our pastor, pastoral staff, our Blessed Sacrament Community, Sisters of Notre Dame and all who build God s reign in our parish family. We pray: Stay with us, LORD.

7 o LORD Jesus Christ, in this Year of Mercy, may we show the gift of compassion and care to others. We pray: Stay with us, LORD. o LORD Jesus Christ, we hope for more men and women to serve the church in religious life or in the ordained priesthood. Help us discern who will assist you in this special mission. We pray: Stay with us, LORD. BLESSING: LORD God of heaven and earth, you revealed your onlybegotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our LORD. SIGNING WITH THE CROSS: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. SING: O Come All Ye Faithful or another song. WRITE & BLESS: 20 + C + M + B + 16 on door posts with blessed chalk from church narthex and use holy water from room to room to bless the home. Holy water may be taken from the baptismal font from church. Prayers for our Search Committees: During these busy days of Advent, our search committees for the Advancement Director and Music/Liturgy Minister are continuing. The process is to name people to the committee; those who volunteered were selected by me. They will work on a job description based on the feedback from the parish leaders, post the job description, receive the applicant s information, interview those who fit our criteria, and call back those for an additional interview who we feel are most appropriate. For our Music/Liturgy Minister, they will audition with the different music groups. The committee then will make a recommendation to me to hire or continue to search until the best candidate is ready for SPB. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will send us great candidates who will help us grow as a parish family. Where are we growing next? Our search committees have helped me reflect on who we are as a parish. Thankfully, we have our excellent strategic/pastoral plan which has completed year one. An element that was suggested in the pastoral plan was a liturgy survey. Our Liturgy Commission, still under the direction of our Music/Liturgy Minister, Julie Parrotta (until January 11, 2016), will be having a survey for your input at the weekend Masses of January 9/10. It will also be online for those unable to attend the weekend Masses. We look forward to 2016 and the continued implementation of the pastoral plan and improving our liturgies here at SPB. We also invite your continued participation, especially for some of the other times we offer liturgies, such as 8:00 a.m. weekdays, 4:45 p.m. weekdays, and for devotional prayer such as the rosary at 8:30 a.m. or prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In next week s bulletin, I will share with you some of the items from our maintenance team as we look into 2016 and make key decisions on our campus improvements. Until next Sunday s bulletin, let us continue to pray for each other! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, Class of 1979 Pastor jtlanesss@gmail.com / Phone x111

9 YOUTH MINISTRY Charlie Brown: Isn t there ANYONE who knows what Christmas is all about?!?! Linus: And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. (Luke 2:8-14) You see, Charlie Brown that s what Christmas is all about. Thank you to everyone who came to our Breakfast with Santa-Birthday Party for Jesus! It was an incredible day and the perfect way to start the week of Christmas. On behalf of the entire Office of Youth Ministry, we want to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and an amazing new year. Thank you for your support! Our next youth group event will be a combined Youth Group Eucharist Adoration next Sunday starting at 5:30 p.m. Please call Mrs. Mickol for more information! I would like to share a reflection of one of our NCYC Pilgrims. "NCYC was a really amazing experience for me. I was amazed that a group of 25,000 teens could go from "so loud you can't hear yourself think" during an opening concert to "so silent you could hear a pin drop" during Adoration. I was really touched when l saw all 25,000 people drop to their knees when the Blessed Sacrament was processed in. Adoration was absolutely beautiful and so was the Mass to close the conference. The talk sessions were also amazing. Having all those people open up about their lives, including their most personal secrets, and then go on to show us how God got them through that and how He can get us through anything, had a very powerful impact on me. They opened my mind to new ways of seeing God that I have never thought of before. Overall, NCYC was a very eye-opening experience and one that I will carry with me forever. I'm grateful that I got to experience this and I strongly encourage others to go to this conference so that they can experience the same things I did because no words can do it justice." - Jack Ina, Junior at NDCL and active member of youth group. CLOWN AND HELPING HANDS MINISTRY The Clown and Helping Hands Ministry are shadowing Pope Francis way. During this Year of Mercy we are reaching out to the needy, homeless and our own ministry family. This past week, three of our volunteers lost a member of their extended families. We joined together as a family and reached out to them in their time of sadness. We follow Pope Francis way on many levels. This past week we brought gifts, a hot meal, joy and laughter to Laura House. The women and children appreciated all the kindness they received from Santa and the Clowns. The smiles on their faces showed it all. Santa gave gifts and stockings filled with necessary items. When the volunteers see this excitement and gratefulness, they know they made it a very special night. God is smiling down on us and saying When you did it for the least of my brothers and sisters you did it for me. My prayer for them is that they know God watches over every one of them. When they are cold remember God is keeping them warm in His heart; when they are hungry remember God will feed them in spirit; when they are suffering from a loss remember God will console them and help them realize they are not abandoned. God is always watching over them. God Bless all of you and thank you for everything you do for this ministry. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME..ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD.
