Over the last three months I have been called upon to celebrate over five funerals and possibly a sixth coming. In our faith, this is a celebration of life. In our book of common prayer, it says, The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn. I have shared in that great sorrow with families as I visit those about to pass on, while lying in the hospital. This is a blessing of a priest but sometimes can be very trying. We can sometimes lose our focus and ask why there is so much death in our lives until God has a way of bringing us back to reality. I was so pleased to see the pictures of Dick and Judy with their new grandson and feel the joy that God gives us on the other end of our sorrow. To see the smile on Dicks face as he talks about this gift from God is priceless. As I sat in Dicks office talking about Church busifuneral I looked out his window and saw Gene, Candy and Aiden in the garden working and realized what a joy new growth was. The joy we are given to be able to tend all of God s gifts. To understand that all the grief I have witnessed over the last three months is part of that cycle. I just need to keep it in perspective with the blessings of joy that reigns down upon us daily. After I served at the funeral that Monday afternoon, God gave me another blessing. I could spend the evening with Sylvia and my very own new grandson. I sat for an hour or so holding this new life and imagining what he would have ahead of him in his future. I know it was selfish of me but I did not want to let him go so grandma could hold him. I soon realized it is all the cycle of life and as I held my grandson I imagined how it must feel for God to be able to hold all those in His Easter celebration that come home to him. I know it is pride, but I am so proud to be able to introduce my new grandson. (Delano Batista) Life is a great mystery that I give thanks to God every day for letting us be a part of it. Peace, Jim

Scrap Metal We are working on the basement once again and are scraping all metal, coper, steel and aluminum to raise money to refurbish the counter tops on the basement kitchen. This is also another way to keep scrap EFM Graduation May 24, 2017 It was that time of the year for graduation of our EFM group. We had Martin Hardsocg graduate from this four year course. 5 Yes, there are three creeds in the Book of Common Prayer: Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian. The last of these appears in our present BCP after being deleted from the Prayer Book in 1978 by General Convention in Philadelphia. The translation in our current BCP is essentially that found in the 1662 Prayer Book. The beginning paragraph is devoted to the doctrine of the Trinity. This is followed by information on the Catholic belief about the incarnation. The format has been described as like a hymn or psalm. The Athanasian Creed is probably originated in the area now France, in the early sixth century. It was most likely put together by the Catholic clergy and given the name Athanasian in order to distinguish it as being apart from any connection with the Arian Catholics. The Arians believed the Holy Spirit was descended from God the Father only, and not both God the Father and Son together. In our BCP all three of our creeds include this inclusive wording of Father and Son, which is referred to sometimes as the filoque clause. Can you find the Athanasian Creed in the BCP? Here s an easy way to get rid of them for good. Find a small bottle, I prefer a colored bottle so I don t see the trap working, but you can use a clear one. Mini bottles are great. Fill the bottle with straight vinegar and add one drop of Ivory soap. The soap helps break the tension of the surface and causes the insect to fall in. Other dish soap brands such as Dawn, are detergents, and for this project you want a true soap. Then place the bottle in a discreet corner and just check it occasionally to see if it needs refilled. The Walk of Grace will be Sunday, August 13th, 2017. St. Christopher s had their first walk team last year.

7 The Walk of Grace will be Sunday, August 13th, St. Christopher s had their first walk team last year. The purpose of the walk is two-fold: To offer comfort and resources to survivors of suicide loss; and to provide education and awareness about suicide, and how everyone can be involved in reducing suicide in our community and state. Last year we had a booth to provide prayers for those who asked. In addition to the booths and displays, the Walk of Grace includes a remembrance ceremony; and both individual walkers and teams are encouraged to make a memory sign which will be placed around the lake. The Walk of Grace 2017 will be held at the Lions Park Amphitheatre on Sunday, August 13th, 2017, with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m., and the Walk beginning at 11:30 a.m. You have time to attend church at St. Christopher s before the walk begins.
