3 The Role of the Papacy and Our Obligation in Faith, continued What if? For the sake of argument let s play the What if game. What if a pope or ecumenical council did try to define something in contradiction to previous defined doctrine (dogma)? It would be invalid. Most believe that Christ, because of his promise, will prevent this from ever happening. I certainly hope so, and I believe so. This, for sure, I have no doubt, Christ has and will always prevent the pope or an ecumenical council from teaching error in her extraordinary teaching authority in the first instance. By this, I mean that when the Council of Nicea defined the two natures of Christ as Divine and Human, there is, by divine protection, no possibility of error. If any pope or ecumenical council tries to revisit this and say that Christ was only human, it would not be in their authority to do so and they would be guilty of heresy. We must hold to the first definition and reject any other definition that would try to contradict it. Also, if any pope or ecumenical council wanted to revisit Pope John Paul II s definition of an only male priesthood, and open up ordination to the priesthood to woman, it would not be in their authority to do so and they would be guilty of heresy. What if a Pope or an Ecumenical Council tried to substantially change a clear and certain doctrine of the Church that has not been defined as dogma? Again, I hope and believe Christ will prevent this. But for the sake of argument, I would say it would depend on the strength and nature of the doctrine. Some doctrines are just too obviously and essentially part of the Catholic Faith. When a teaching has been taught always, throughout the entire church, and not only has been believed by the people, taught by the bishops, and not only confirmed by a pope, but has repeatedly been confirmed by many popes, although never with a precise definition, that teaching is clearly infallible. One pope, even in a magisterial teaching document like an encyclical, cannot change that teaching. However, what if he tried to change it via the use of his extraordinary teaching authority with a papal definition? For example, what if a pope tried to reverse the teaching of the Church that condemns the use of artificial contraception according to Pope Paul VI s encyclical Humanae Vitae? This teaching was taught by popes Pius XI, Paul VI, John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. It has been taught throughout the history of the Church since apostolic times, it has been believed by the faithful (although not by the majority now, but still held to be true by many the history of belief outweighs the disbelief of modern times), and the bishops are teaching it (they have been and continue to do so, although not all, but again this does not negate the universality of everyone), and not just one but many, popes have confirmed it. At one time most of the bishops of the church promoted the Arian heresy which denied the Divinity of Christ. However, this does not invalidate the universality of always or everyone, and besides, not one, but many popes condemned the Arian heresy. The more popes that teach or confirm a doctrine, the more clearly they are doing so from the Petrine Office and not from their person, i.e. promoting their personal beliefs. This is clearly infallible teaching. So, again: What if a Pope or an Ecumenical council tried to define a teaching that stated artificial contraception is not intrinsically evil, and its use may be morally permitted? It could never happen. Christ will prevent it. But for the sake of argument, what if? It certainly would have to be rejected. Our faith is a catholic faith and all teachings of the Church, even extraordinary teachings must be catholic, must be universal. It would be an attempt to define something that is outside their authority, for any and all definitions must be found in the deposit of faith. That artificial contraception is morally permissible is not part of the deposit of faith, it never has been and therefore it never could be. Popes and ecumenical councils are bound by the deposit of faith. For scenarios that are not so clear and definite, this hypothetical game is impossible. As Catholic s we believe Christ will prevent the Church from teaching error in such a way that we could be deceived. There was no possibility that an Ecumenical Council or a Pope could have defined that Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was not immaculately conceived, even in the time of St. Thomas Aquinas (d AD), when the belief in her immaculate conception was not certain in the Church. Even St. Thomas Aquinas taught that she was not immaculately conceived, but her original sin was removed after her conception. (Actually, St. Thomas once taught that she was immaculately conceived, but later changed his teaching it seems he may not have been too certain.) However, due to Pope Pius IX s definition Ex Cathedra in 1858 AD, we now know for certain and must believe with an assent of faith, that Mary was immaculately conceived without any stain of sin, even original sin. In Jesus and Mary,
