This was the second year for the Craft Fair and our third year for participating in the Winter Stroll. It was delightful to see so many people enter our church, many for the first time, and admire the beauty of God's House and enjoy a generous sampling of Catholic music. Events such as these bring people together and those actively involved enjoy a renewed spirit of friendship and even fun. As a parish, we benefit enormously from these creative initiatives. I am very grateful to the great team of people who do so much work, much of it unseen. Thank you! Financial Report The Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2015 was published last weekend. Copies are available in the vestibule next to the weekly bulletin. The report provides a general overview of income and expenses, which are now balanced. Please take a copy and study it carefully. The great generosity of many people has allowed us to cover our high building expenses without going into debt or neglecting our many maintenance needs. Special thanks to Mary Jane King, the chairperson of the Finance Committee, and to the other members who have spent hours planning and reviewing our complex financial operations. Also, thanks to Jean Dickson, our bookkeeper who keeps our bills paid and keeps careful track of every penny that enters and exits our account. Pew Missals Available We have a supply of the Ignatius Press Pew Missal on the back table. These are for people who would like to have a sturdy missalette for their own personal use through the year. The Missals contains the weekend readings and the ordinary of the Mass. They are very nice. We request an offering of $7.00. 6 The Jubilee of Mercy at St. Patrick Church Next Tuesday, December 8, the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy will commence. Pope Francis announced this special year-long celebration back on April 11. At that time, he stated that the purpose of the Jubilee is to call everyone "to gaze even more attentively on Mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's action in our lives." For many centuries, the celebration of Jubilees has included the opening of the Holy Door at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. The opened door symbolizes the great liberality of God who bestows special blessings and grace on all people who celebrate the Jubilee. Considering that only a few people can actually make the long and expensive pilgrimage to Rome, the Holy Father has encouraged bishops to designate "Holy Doors" within their own dioceses, thereby enabling people to replicate the experience of passing through the original Holy Door at the Lateran. Bishop Libasci has graciously bestowed on St. Patrick Church the honor and privilege of being one of the nine New Hampshire churches with a local Holy Door. The bishop selected St. Patrick's because of its exquisite beauty, relative antiquity, and central location in the Diocese's second biggest city. We have decided to designate the door closest to the new confessional as the Holy Door. This seemed especially appropriate because the confessional is the "font of Mercy," the very site of God's forgiveness that flows from the Sacrament of Penance. Moreover, Pope Francis stressed that Confession is an integral part of the celebration of the Jubilee of Mercy. The Holy Father wrote: "Confessions are called to be a sign of the primacy of mercy always, everywhere, and in every situation, no matter what." Of course, long before Pope Francis emphasized the importance of making confessions easily and frequently available, the pastors of St. Patrick's had already established the custom of daily confessions. Since September 2011, we have actually extended our confession times on weekdays and Sundays. Currently, we have four hours of scheduled confession times. We also have many extra hours before Christmas and during Holy Week, including Holy Saturday. Many non-parishioners come to St. Patrick's for confession because of our regularity and convenient location. This is a great blessing for our parish: the celebration of God's forgiveness with people who do not actually worship here. Pope Francis has also stressed that the manifestation of God's Mercy necessarily includes the "corporal works of mercy," namely feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and so forth. He has called each parish to become an "oasis of Mercy." We try to do this all the time, especially through the excellent -- even heroic! -- work of our St. Vincent De Paul Society. Everyone can perform the "corporal works of mercy" easily and simply through contributions dropped in the Poor Box. Last year, over $32,000 went from the hands of parishioners into the hands of the needy through the Poor Box. This is a great sign of God's Mercy passed on through His people. We hope to continue this work during the Jubilee. During the 9:30 Mass next week, we will celebrate the blessing and opening of St. Patrick's Holy Door. As we anticipate the beginning of the Jubilee of Mercy on December 8, please pray that our parish will indeed become an "oasis of Mercy," as the Holy Father desires. Fr.
