3 Theology of the Body (Column 2) Who and What is God? What is God? God is a Divine Spirit. The concept of spirit is hard to explain other than by what it is not: it is not physical, and by physical I mean every aspect of the science and study of physics, biology, chemistry or any of the empirical sciences. With the exception of believers in God, for most people reality is reduced to the empirical sciences. What is real is what can be measured and experienced by our senses, even if only with the help of scientific tools. The belief in God (not the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology and the like) is a belief that there is a reality, a way of existing, of being, that is beyond the physical world. It is a reality that cannot be seen, tasted, touched, heard, or smelled by our bodily senses. While I will come back to angels later, they belong to the spiritual realm. If one sees an angel it is through an intervention of God that permits it, and it usually is in a form that can be experienced by the body, or at least described as such. In other words, those who have seen spiritual realities are often seeing the spiritual reality in a form that can be expressed in the language of our senses and not in the pure form of the spirit itself. The saints who have had this experience of spiritual realities in the form of pure spirit, say they have no words to describe the reality. Now, back to God. While we can say God is a Spirit, technically this is inaccurate. God is not a spirit, God is The Spirit. By this I mean God is the Divine Spirit. I say it this way because many believe in more than one god. We believe in One God who is uncreated and created all else that is. God is that being who is Perfect. If we attribute anything to God that is not perfect, then we are not talking about The God, but a god. While many may have been deceived or simply have erroneously postulated the existence of gods, they cannot be equated with the God of the three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I use the words deceived because even in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) we see that many false gods were at times worshiped. Some of them (false gods) were demons (fallen angels created spirits) presenting themselves as gods to be worshiped. They are not divine. There is only one Divine Spirit - God. When we speak of The God, as mentioned above, every attribute must be Perfect. If it is not Perfect, it is not God. We can summarize the perfections of God in what we call the Five Chief Perfections of God: Eternal: God is that being who is eternal, always existed. Too often the word eternal is defined as time unending. Actually eternity means outside time, or beyond time. Time is something created by God. Time exists in God. God has no beginning and no end. God simply IS. Always was, always will be. As God said to Moses: I AM who AM. Infinite: God is that being who has no measure or limit. God is often thought of as existing somewhere out there, in the universe or beyond, as a separate being who looks down upon creation. God is REALITY. God is EXIST- ENCE. All that exists, exists in God. The universe, and all the science within it, exists in God. As God said to Moses: I AM who AM. All Knowing: God knows all. Before creation, God IS. God created the universe and all within it out of nothing. Since time is created by God, the beginning of time and the end of time exist in God. Since all that is created is created by God and exists in God, God knows all. As God said to Moses: I AM who AM. All Powerful: God Is, and God created. All things came to be by the power of God. All power that exists in the universe, and the created spiritual realm, was created by God. All power exists in God. As God said to Moses: I AM who AM. All Good. God is Good and everything God created is Good. There can be no evil in God. Evil is the absence of the rejection of Good. But you may notice that good implies a moral quality. While the very existence of God is good, and every inanimate creation of God is good, the quality of goodness is applied to creation. Everything God created He created good, but the goodness of its being, of its existence, can only be referenced to God, its Creator. Any goodness in the creature comes from the Creator. As we will see, when we look at creation, all that God created is good. Evil only comes into being, not as a thing in and of itself, but only in relation to the Good of God which is rejected. This implies again a moral judgement, not only of the creature, but of God. This further implies reason and intellect. To make a long explanation short: God is not simply a force, a power that has a dark side and a light side as in the series: Star Wars. God is a personal being: God does not simply love, God Is Love. The regular 8:30, which will be offered for all souls, and a 7:30 PM which will be offered for the souls presented to the altar here at St. Patrick s. Also, at the 7:30 PM Mass the names of those who were buried from our church since September 2015 will be remembered with the lighting of a candle in their memory. The remembrance of those buried from St. Patrick s will be an annual celebration at 7:30 PM on All Souls Day. Since this year is the inaugural year, we begin from September Next year it will be only the names of those who were buried from St. Patrick s since November 1 of All are welcome. Music will be provided to make the mass more solemn.
