2 2 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 2, 2014 Engaged, Marriage and Family Ministries at St. Bede The engaged, marriage and family ministries have been serving individuals, couples and families of St. Bede for over 25 years. The goal of these ministries is to create a trusted bond with those to whom we minister; to assist them in creating healthy, holy and strong relationships in marriage and family life; and to give hope to those who are hurting and to help them in the healing process. The engaged ministry leads couples through an extensive process, which helps them to know each other more fully, to know God in the Sacrament and to know that we are here to support them in all aspects of their lives. The marriage ministry offers programs and support to enrich couples relationships with not only each other but with God and the community. We acknowledge these marriages on the 2nd Sunday of each month with a special couples blessing and renewal of vows at all the Masses. Throughout the year we organize and coordinate enrichment programs like "Dinner for Two," "Marriage Encounter," homilies at Mass and special evening reflections on topics supporting marriage and family. When couples are struggling in their marriage we reach out to them to help them get back what they had on their wedding day. If a marriage fails we guide them with compassion and empathy and help get them get into a support group. We also work with them through the annulment process should they desire to do so. The family ministry conducts children's liturgies at the 11:00 AM Mass on the first, third and fifth Sundays of the month. After the Penitential Rite of the Mass, the children are lead to Coleman Hall where the facilitator uses child oriented scripture readings to lead them in prayer. We have recently established a "Family Mass Sunday, the 4th Sunday of the month, in which families are involved in the liturgy and where the homily theme is related to some aspect of family. During Mass, the homily is interactive with the community, giving them the opportunity to share their thoughts on the theme as well. These ministries have touched the lives of many over the years and our ministers have done an outstanding job. We are in need of families and individuals to come forward and join us in one or more of these ministries. We are looking for: Married couples that are passionate about their marriage and would like to share their experiences by opening their homes and meeting with engaged couples for their premarital inventory and follow up. Any person who would be interested in assisting with Engaged/Marriage and/or Family enrichment events and activities. Any families that would be interested in participating in Family Masses. Any certified counselors who would be willing to offer their guidance to help troubled couples. Individuals to lead children's liturgies. Couples willing to assist in facilitated events. If interested, please contact Deacon Larry Spohr or Tina Lutzke. You can us at lspohr@stbedechurch.com or call the rectory at Thanks and God bless, Deacon Larry and Tina Lutzke

LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR THIS YEAR ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation: it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for the celebration of Easter. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observations of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance. (U.S. Catholic Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966.)

6 6 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 2, 2014 Lenten Scripture Series The Acts of the Apostles Come and join us for an informative venture into the birth of the Catholic Church. Jesus is the center of our faith and church but if it had not been for his disciples the church would most likely not be what it is today! The Gospels are very informative about the life, death and ministry of Jesus. They carry us up to the time when the Holy Spirit descended upon the men and women who would have to make a decision as to whether to continue what Jesus started. Without the Acts of the Apostles, the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John would be left without a satisfying answer to the question, "What happened next?" Acts is a historical document that follows these men and women through their decision to continue. This continuation leads to the birth of the church as we know it today. What these men and women went through so you and I can peacefully worship here every day without the threat of persecution is truly the work of the Holy Spirit. The Lenten series began on February 26th and continues on Wednesdays through April 9th. Each session during Lent we will come to understand and interact with the most crucial, interesting and difficult journeys of those who devoted themselves in fulfilling the mission of Jesus Christ. What will be the objectives in this study of Acts? To understand the content and significance of the Book of Acts in the establishment and early growth of the church. To venture through each of the chapters to fully appreciate the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the apostles and the early church. To reveal the examples of conversion to the gospel of Christ. To answer the question, So what does this have to do with my life today? How will the class be conducted? Each class will consist of a discussion of selected passages from Acts working through the book chapter by chapter. Handouts will be given that highlight each week's discussion. Review questions will be distributed for each chapter for home follow-up and discussion with the family. The first class will be introductory in nature and will assign chapters to be read prior to the next class. Bibles will be given out for the series so we are all using the same text. Who will facilitate the series and where will they be held? Deacons Larry Spohr and Phil Bertolani in the School Library from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM. Will I miss out if I can t attend every class? Handouts will be given outlining each week's class. If you miss one there will be enough information in the handouts to keep you up to date. Will there be time for open discussion? Classes will vary in the time given to open discussion. Throughout each class interaction will be the norm! Will we cover every chapter in Acts? Yes, but some will have less emphasis than others depending on chapter significance. Tentative Class Schedule March 5 Chapters 2-5 (Ash Wednesday Class will end at 7:45 PM for those wanting to attend the 8:00 PM Mass for ashes) March 12 Chapters 6-9 March 19 Chapters March 26 Chapters April 2 Chapters April 9 Chapters All you have to do is show up on the 26th of February to sign up. God bless, Deacon Larry Spohr

This year, the theme of the Appeal is: You are the temple of God. We are living temples of God and carry His true presence into the world. He calls us to share our gifts with others. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work our parish, of our Arch-diocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. As you review the mailing from Cardinal George, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then, please give generously. Note that when our parish reaches its goal of $34, in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish.

11 St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 11 LETTER OF POPE FRANCIS TO FAMILIES Dear Families, With this letter, I wish, as it were, to come into your homes to speak about an event which will take place at the Vatican this coming October. It is the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which is being convened to discuss the theme of pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelization. Indeed, in our day the Church is called to proclaim the Gospel by confronting the new and urgent pastoral needs facing the family. This important meeting will involve all the People of God bishops, priests, consecrated men and women, and lay faithful of the particular Churches of the entire world all of whom are actively participating in preparations for the meeting through practical suggestions and the crucial support of prayer. Such support on your part, dear families, is especially significant and more necessary than ever. This Synodal Assembly is dedicated in a special way to you, to your vocation and mission in the Church and in society; to the challenges of marriage, of family life, of the education of children; and the role of the family in the life of the Church. I ask you, therefore, to pray intensely to the Holy Spirit, so that the Spirit may illumine the Synodal Fathers and guide them in their important task. As you know, this Extraordinary Synodal Assembly will be followed a year later by the Ordinary Assembly, which will also have the family as its theme. In that context, there will also be the World Meeting of Families due to take place in Philadelphia in September May we all, then, pray together so that through these events the Church will undertake a true journey of discernment and adopt the necessary pastoral means to help families face their present challenges with the light and strength that comes from the Gospel. I am writing this letter to you on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The evangelist Luke tells us that the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, in keeping with the Law of Moses, took the Baby Jesus to the temple to offer him to the Lord, and that an elderly man and woman, Simeon and Anna, moved by the Holy Spirit, went to meet them and acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah (cf. Lk 2:22-38). Simeon took him in his arms and thanked God that he had finally seen salvation. Anna, despite her advanced age, found new vigor and began to speak to everyone about the Baby. It is a beautiful image: two young parents and two elderly people, brought together by Jesus. He is the one who brings together and unites generations! He is the inexhaustible font of that love which overcomes every occasion of self-absorption, solitude, and sadness. In your journey as a family, you share so many beautiful moments: meals, rest, housework, leisure, prayer, trips and pilgrimages, and times of mutual support Nevertheless, if there is no love then there is no joy, and authentic love comes to us from Jesus. He offers us his word, which illuminates our path; he gives us the Bread of life which sustains us on our journey. Dear families, your prayer for the Synod of Bishops will be a precious treasure which enriches the Church. I thank you, and I ask you to pray also for me, so that I may serve the People of God in truth and in love. May the protection of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph always accompany all of you and help you to walk united in love and in caring for one another. I willingly invoke on every family the blessing of the Lord. From the Vatican, 2 February 2014 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord FRANCIS
