2 Charity is Love Mother Teresa Prayer - "Final Analysis" People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. Prayerfully yours, Larry Lewandowski, State Deputy North Dakota Knights of Columbus Do small things with great love. -Mother Teresa 1

5 State Deputy Message My Brothers in Christ, CHARITY IS LOVE What a great year, we the Knights of Columbus in North Dakota have had in recruiting new members into our midst. The Circle of Honor is within our grasp. North Dakota will stand as one of the elite jurisdictions of all the Knights of Columbus. Our membership teams have worked hard and are continuing to do so, to offer to each Catholic gentleman the opportunity to join us and to provide for their families through our insurance programs. Recruiting new members or bringing back those who have fallen by the wayside is not just about numbers, rather it is about growing our Order that we may continue to help those in need throughout our state, our country and throughout the world, while we continue to walk the path of Jesus. In order to have councils that are active we must have programs that are meaningful and excite and encourage our members to participate in them. Take part in your Council, State, and Supreme programs. The results of your participation will build your confidence in being a Knight of Columbus and will further our mission to Grow the Domestic Church as Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has asked of all Knights. Questions are a way of life. Feel free to ask any Officer of the Knights of Columbus in your councils or in the state council if you have questions or need assistance. We will answer! Let us all work together to strengthen our families, our church and our faith through the use of Charity as our guide. Love thy neighbor as you love thy self. Vivat Jesus Larry Lewandowski 4

6 Membership My Brother Knights of North Dakota, July 1 marks the date of the new Fraternal Year. We begin anew to build our council, parish, and community to the vision of Fr. Mcgivney. With its rewards, we will help the many people in need, build families, and be united in faith. How can we accomplish this? Recruiting a new member a month. Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of a council. Offering a man a membership provides an opportunity for him to improve his outlook on life and to share with his community. This experience will strengthen the fraternal bonds with his brother knights and his family. As our Supreme Knight has mentioned in his discussions the we need to extend every catholic man a membership in the Knights of Columbus. To accomplish this we are asking all brother knights to reach out to your family and friends and invite them to become a member in the Knights of Columbus Our efforts must be focused on Recruiting through activity. With council activities and events, men and families become involve and proactive for charitable works. With these goals of activities, we can surely keep the vision alive and ensure the continued growth of the Knights of Columbus. Thank you for your efforts in bring new families to the forefront of the Order. Working together, we are confident that the Knights of Columbus can be in every Parish on North Dakota, either through Council or Round Table. Best Regards, Kevin T Boehm Membership Director/State Advocate 318 Cottonwood St Grand Forks, ND

7 10 Keyes to Success By Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson When the state deputies are in New Haven for their organizational meeting, I review with them my 10 Keys to Success. I believe that these keys are as important to grand knights and district deputies as they are to state deputies. I outline them here: Be Membership-Growth Oriented 365 Days a Year. Every activity your council undertakes should be geared to membership growth. Establish Long-Term Goals for Growth. Long term should be at least five years. Create Team-Oriented Council Officers. Work as a team toward a common goal, whether it be a service project or a recruitment target. Maintain a Positive Attitude and Communicate It. You must instill a positive attitude The best is yet to come This year can be better than last year, and next year will be even better than now. Focus on Youth and Youthful Leadership. Conduct programs that attract younger men and their families, such as our free-throw program and soccer challenge. Take Advantage of Leadership Training Programs. The Supreme Council and your state council want need you succeed. Attend grand knight training seminars, state meeting and functions. Establish Accountability. Be accountable to your fellow officers, your chaplain and to your members. Give them direction and let them know what you expect of them. Have and Communicate Clear Priorities. Repeat them often at meetings, in newsletters, via or in other regular correspondence with your officers and members. Be Open to Change. Constantly assess your performance and adjust your program to meet overall goals. 6

16 Sample pulpit talk for recruitment Good evening Father, ladies, brother Knights and families. My name is (Your name) from the Knights of Columbus: Someone asked me after learning that I was a member of the Knights of Columbus. What are the Knights and tell me everything that they do? The Knights of Columbus are unique in the Catholic Church. We owe this to the founder of our Order and his inspired vision, the servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney. For many years we have identified ourselves as a Catholic family, fraternal, service organization. We are each of those things independent of the other; for example, we are a Catholic organization or a service organization. It is the combination of both of these that makes us unique and gives us strength. First of all, our devotion to our faith makes us unique. Our roots are in our Catholic parish. Our founder was a priest. Our service programs are informed by our faith. Our willingness to give of ourselves for the church and community, for families in need, for brother knights and young people results annually in record amounts of charity and service. To truly be a Knight is to live the virtues of Columbianism. That is also part of Father McGivney s vision. We are always striving to be better Catholic men, better husbands, fathers, and sons, better citizens, better neighbors, better leaders What is unique for us is the spiritual dimension; what the Second Vatican Council referred to as the universal call to holiness. That is the spirit of the Order. I come to you today to inform you of some of possibilities here at (Your Parish) but only with your help. We need more families to join our family, the Knights of Columbus, to better serve the needs of the priest and parish. Knights of Columbus in their local churches serve as; ushers, greeters, ministers, cooks, janitors, baby sitters, painters, and last year the North Dakota Knights of Columbus donated in excess of $50,000 to seminarians and religious for their studies, you name it the Knights are probably doing it. You have an active Knights of Columbus council here in but we need you and your family. We can offer you a fraternal group that works and plays together while promoting our Catholic faith. The opportunity to help your pastor in caring for your church and community, to help our youth in programs available such as essay contests, coloring contest, scholarships, sporting events, and programs for the parish. Knights also support the RSVP vocations program, Pennies for Vocations, and Handicap funding. You might say we are we already doing most of the programs, yes hopefully you are. The Knights offer leadership and organization to the pastor and church, along with other benefits. The list of things we have to offer is endless and I know you would get tired of listening to me. Please stop after Mass and visit with members of the Knights. Better yet, come and join us. We want and need all of you. The peace of Jesus Christ be with you and the blessings or Our Lady of Fatima grant you ever lasting life. Thank you for your time. 15

This member will work closely with the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary each month to monitor the status of the current membership. The State Membership Retention Chairmen s most important duty is to make a personal contact with the member. A telephone call followed by a visit with him and his family, either at his house or at the church following Mass. During the visit explain the Daily Mass benefit. State Deputy Larry Lewandowski, will not allow any unnecessary suspension without a personal contact: Suspension Procedures, found in this handbook, MUST BE FOLLOWED. 26 Suspension, Billing, & Retention Guidelines 1. The financial secretary shall mail the Membership Bill (First Notice) 15 days prior to the billing period. Normally mid-december. 2. If the payment is not received within 30 days from the first notice, the financial secretary will mail a Membership Bill Second Notice. (mid-january) 3. If the payment is still not received within 30 days from the second notice then the following actions will the taken: 1. The financial secretary should try making contact with all delinquent members via to alert them of the processes that follow. - This is a courtesy providing the member has The Financial Secretary will send a Knight Alert letter (Form# KA1) to each delinquent member, signed by the grand knight and the trustees listing their contact information so that the delinquent member can contact them. 3. The financial secretary will provide the names, addresses, telephone numbers and the amounts of the delinquency for each member in the arrears to the retention committee (or GK and trustees). The committee should include but is not limited to the grand knight,; membership director; retention chairman; trustees; and any other members who wish to participate. 4. About 2 weeks after the Knight Alert has been sent out the grand knight will assign a member of the committee (listed above in line 3) to make personal contact with the delinquent member to remind them of their obligation. They should ascertain any reasons for failure to pay. The committee member will provide a written report of his findings to the Grand Knight. If the member is experiencing financial difficulty, the Grand Knight will direct the committee members to visit the member and make arrangements to accommodate him )either a payment plan or other financial arrangement acceptable to the council). 5. Again, a full report is to be provided to the grand knight as to why the member Is delinquent and why he is considering leaving the Order. Financial difficulty is not a valid reason for suspension. 6. Following this month a member that is still delinquent in his dues - the Notice of Intent to Retain is the be submitted by the financial secretary and the grand knight. 7. Once accepted by Supreme, the Grand Knight must send electronically the Conversation Listing to the District Deputy, State Retention Chairman, State Membership Director, and State Deputy. Along with a report of what the council has done and concluded for the member to be retained. 8. If the delinquent member does not meet his obligation or arrange a satisfactory payment schedule within 60 days following processing the Notice of Intent to Retain, the council may file a Form 100 Membership Document, indicating suspension. However, the suspension will not be processed at the Supreme Council office unless a Notice of Intent to Retain has been on file of the required 60 days. 9. The Notice of Intent to Retain becomes null and void 90 days following the date it is recorded at the Supreme Council office. After the 90-day period has elapsed, the form will be removed from the file under the assumption the council has been successful in retaining the member. Notes: If subsequently the member on whom the council previously filed a Notice of Intent to retain should again become delinquent, the entire billing/retention process must be re-implemented as described herein. If a member is not suspended by May 1st he is carried through the next entire Columbian year on the councils Per Capita. If the council is making all its requirements to achieve Star Council I would suggest not suspending the members but carrying the number of numbers needed to make Star Council Award until the start of the new Columbian year on July 1st, even if this means starting the billing/retention process over again. Financial Secretary can not be the Retention Chairman 25

27 Sample Letter for Member Retention Dear Brother Knight and Spouse, Please read this letter before you make any decisions. Yes, since the inception of the Order, a Daily Mass is offered for all deceased members and their spouse. To have a Mass said at your local parish a stipend is given to the Parish and a Mass is offered for your loved one. Just think, for being a member of the Knights of Columbus a Mass will be offered every day for eternity priceless. Another one of the many benefits available is the Family Fraternal Benefit. We offer many other benefits from your local council, along with the encouragement of the local Bishop, and Priest, and His Holiness Pope Francis. Please forward your dues to the local council or return it to me for processing, or if you have moved and want to transfer to another council fill out the form, or if you want to withdraw from the Knights also sign it return it I will take care of the rest of the details. 28 Roundtable A Knights of Columbus Presence in Every Parish. Living in service to all is one of the most dynamic qualities of being a Knight. A unique way for Knights to serve is by helping out in local parishes, especially in those churches that do not have a Knights of Columbus presence and are not large enough to have their own council. The Order requests council members to extend services to such parishes. This can be accomplished by establishing a Parish Round Table in which current member Knights help local parishes. The parish priest will identify the services he requires. The Parish Round Table Coordinator will then work with members of the Parish Round Table and the council to fulfill his wishes. A Round Table Booklet #2632 is available from the Supreme office for proper set up of a Round Table. A Coordinator is needed. He reports to the local council once a month. There are no elected offices There are no regular meetings Benefits of a Round Table: The Pastor sets the programs Pastor involvement is as he wishes Obtaining membership goals are made easier You are helping your Parish Community You are helping your Parish Priest in his efforts Roundtable Chairman RICHARD NIEBAUER 3408 s 20TH st Fargo, ND rrneibauer@hotmail.com 27

29 Ceremonials There are four different ceremonials in the order of the Knights of Columbus, one for each degree of the Order. Yes, all four of the ceremonials are secretive. This is the only thing that is to be known to only Knights of Columbus members, everything else we do is open to the public. Our ADMISSIONS degree pertains to CHARITY; The Grand Knight of the council is responsible for the Admissions degree initiations. They can be done by a team or by the DVD that Supreme has supplied. There should be at least one admissions degree per month per district. Each District Deputy is responsible to have this set up and reported to the State Deputy. This is the first step into Knighthood. Encourage the members to continue on. Our FORMATION degree pertains to UNITY; District Deputies are responsible for the formation degree initiations. This is coordinated between the ceremonials chairman, District Deputies, State Deputy and the Captain of the formation degree team. This can be done as a stand-alone but is usually held in conjunction with the knighthood degree. Our KNIGHTHOOD degree pertains to FRATERNITY; The State Deputy is responsible for the knighthood degree initiations. All knighthood degree exemplifications are to be done by a conferring officer that is appointed by the State Deputy. All these degrees are approved by the Supreme office as of the place and date. The only person to cancel this degree is the State Deputy, that being said; it takes communication between the District Deputy and the State Deputy weeks prior to this event. When we combine the three degrees, we then refer to it as our Major Degree. Major degrees are set by the district deputy in conjunction with the ceremonial chairman. Our FOURTH degree pertains to PATRIOTISM; The District Master of the State is responsible for setting up this degree after approval of date and place by the Supreme office. District Master and Faithful Navigator are responsible for putting the team together and doing the exemplification. This is held as a stand-alone exemplification. 30 Insurance Following are some examples of support that we can offer the State Office, as well as our Local Councils. SUPPORT Since there are a number of newly elected officers statewide, the Agency would like to remind everyone of the support that the Agency Field Force can offer you. We would like to work closely with all the State Officers and Grand Knights when it comes to Insurance Promotion and also assist when possible with Membership Recruitment. DEVELOP A PLAN The Grand Knight should feel free to call the General Agent or Field Agent to develop a plan involving promotions for both council meeting attendance and the Order s insurance program. TEAMWORK Throughout the Order, our Fraternal and Insurance aspects must be blended into a smooth working team. Such is the task of the Grand Knights and the Insurance Promotion and Membership Chairman. General Agents and Field Agents are an integral part of the council s membership and retention campaigns. Their expertise regarding the Fraternal Benefits of the Order and their knowledge of the members of their councils is invaluable. Use these professional assets to your advantage. COMMUNICATION Communication is the key to everyone s success, so feel free to contact General Agent Pat Dolan, or any of the Field Agents with any concerns or questions you may have. 34 State Program Director s Message Greetings, hope we all are looking forward to a very successful year. My job is to oversee the program chairmen around the State. I will be doing that this year with the help of all the councils and their Grand Knights or council program chairmen. Be sure to read your handbook as we have some changes this year. We will be stressing monthly reporting and participation in a new program. We are introducing a Fatima Rosary rally to take place in October of this year. More information to follow. Monthly reporting of all functions should be easier as we have included a page listing some of the categories you can report on plus your own functions. The State Deputy Award of Excellence will continue as before, according to the points accumulated throughout the year. If a council is not reporting you will be receiving a call from me and the District Deputy. We can t stress enough for you to partake in the Knight of the Month & Year and Family of the Month & Year. Many council also name a Altar Server of the Month, if you do this be sure to send a Foundation card to the recipients. We also will stress, that when you hold a function record it. Take pictures and send them to Shawn for the web site and Edith Schall for the paper. Family of the Month should be submitted to the Supreme Council for monthly drawings of a statue of the Holy Family. Lastly we have enclosed a copy of the Supreme Service Award Application for each council and District Deputy, so that when you hold a function you can write it up immediately and send it in. You don't have to wait until the last minute as you might forget some of the activities. North Dakota has been very fortunate as we have been winners at the Supreme level a number of times, so I m expecting large numbers of entries this year in all categories. 44 Church Activities As Knights of Columbus, we should see our membership in the Order as our opportunity to grow closer to Christ. We do this by our good works, and also through prayer. Brother Knights: the core of Church Activities in our North Dakota Knights of Columbus is our devotion to praying together. The Supreme Knights of Columbus prescribes that we use Marian Devotion as the centerpiece of our prayer. At our Intake Degree, we are presented with a Blessed Rosary, instructed to carry it with us, and recite the Rosary Prayer often. This is a Marian Devotion building block. Our North Dakota Councils are involved in the year-round, in-state movement of the Holy Mother Mary and Holy Family portrait and the accompanying special prayer opportunity. We are encouraged to conduct special Council and Parish events where collective prayer and veneration of the Holy Mother and Holy Family can be done. Two other 365 days a year Knights of Columbus prayer priorities include the Perpetual Rosary for Respect of Life and the Perpetual Rosary for Vocations. Follow the schedule published in the Program Book, and see to it your council is making sure that Council, Parish, or group rosaries are said on days your Council is assigned to play its part. We need this Rosary recitation to occur every day of the year. Another special prayer project is our participation in the Running of the Rose which is involvement by Knights of Columbus all across North America in a special veneration of Mary. North Dakota is on one of six routes for a Blessed Silver Rose of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which travels from Canada to Mexico. The Silver Rose resides for about 3 weeks each in Canadian provinces, in states of the U.S., and in Mexican states. During each 3-week period, local Councils host the Silver Rose, display it, and conduct special prayers suited for the occasion. The significance of the Silver Rose is that Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Her 16 th century appearance in Mexico, left special roses for peasants to use to prove to clergy that the appearances of Our Holy Mother actually occurred. Also, we will be calling Councils attention to the Building The Domestic Church campaign currently emphasized by Knights of Columbus Supreme. There are a dozen specific activities some new, some familiar from which a Council can select and engage, helping advance The Domestic Church effort. This list of Domestic Church activities may be viewed on the Supreme website, where explanations of the activities are provided (go to enter Domestic Church in search panel). Councils are reminded that, for Columbia Award consideration, 4 of a Council s major program activities entered on the Award application must be designated as Building The Domestic Church activities. Finally, during the coming fraternal year, your Church Activities area will be the point of coordination for the Culture of Life Poster Contest, and the Keep Christ In Christmas Poster Contest, for our children. Vivat Jesus! Church Activities Chairman Kent Brick th Ave. NW Mandan, ND kent.brick@gmail.com 43

52 Building the Domestic Church A Seven step program-into the Breach Family Fully Alive In founding the Knights of Columbus. Father Michael J. McGivney sought to respond to the crisis in family life affecting Catholics in 19th-century America. As a young man he witnessed firsthand the challenges his widowed mother faced with seven children at home. Later, as a priest he confronted on a daily basis the problems affecting the families of his parish community due to poverty, violence, alcoholism, immigration, anti-catholic prejudice and discrimination. Father McGivney s vision for family life was not simply that each family might find financial and material aid. He understood that holiness is the calling of all baptized Christians. And, seeing as his two brothers followed him into the priesthood, we can understand how truly important the sanctuary of the home was to the McGivney family. Consecration to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles and partly as a result of conquering them families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a new prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Every Knights of Columbus council should invite families of their parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas. This day is traditionally celebrated as the feast of the Holy Family. It is our hope that this prayer may strengthen our families, revitalize our parishes Father s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Father s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for fathers to celebrate and honor their marriage vows. Annually sponsoring this event on the third Sunday of June will serve to make your council visible to the parish community and show your member s support for all fathers and husbands. During these events, Knights and their wives along with all the married couples of the parish have an opportunity to affirm their commitment to their wedding vows. After the event, councils should host a reception where they can congratulate each couple and thank them for their witness. Working together with your pastor, provide the opportunity for married couples to recall and affirm their wedding vows together with a special blessing during or after the Sunday liturgy. In the Support Materials section we provide two suggested programs you might consider Holy Family Prayer Program The Holy Family Prayer Program began August 4 at the 133rd Supreme Convention in Philadelphia. This program features an image of the Holy Family. Each Knights of Columbus jurisdiction received several Holy Family images, which will be the centerpiece of prayer services conducted in churches and council meeting places throughout the Order for the duration of the program. The Holy Family Prayer Program is the 17th Marian Prayer Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, beginning with the first program honoring Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe - in In preparation for the 1982 Centennial of the Order, the second prayer program was initiated, which highlighted the Holy Family. Since then, the Blessed Mother has been honored by her Knights under her titles of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Pochaiv, Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Charity. These Order wide programs of Marian Prayer have gathered together more than 16 million people at some 140,000 prayer services conducted at local councils and parishes 51

53 5 th Sunday Rosary Program To help bring parishioners together in a spiritual activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Knights of Columbus Supreme council is pleased to announce a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and other parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. The 5th Sunday Rosary services will be conducted on Jul 31, Oct. 30, Jan 29, and April 30, during the fraternal year. Finger rosaries that can be used during the program, are available from the Supreme Council and can be ordered by using the 5th Sunday Rosary Kit (SR-KIT). Participants may also use their own rosaries, and Knights are encouraged to use the rosaries that they received during their First Degree. Conducting this Church Activity every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month as part of the fraternal year will allow your council to list each one in the Church Activities section on the Columbian Award Application (#SP-7). In addition, it provides a visible faith formation program that will engage current members and their families, and offer parish families who are not yet part of the council an opportunity to experience the faith and fellowship that comes with being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Journey to the Inn For many centuries, one of the most effective means of evangelization was the dramatization of events recounted in the New Testament. During the Middle Ages these reenactments became known as mystery or passion plays. The most famous of these has been performed every 10 years since 1634 in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Franciscan missionaries used similar performances to great effect in transmitting the faith to the native peoples of New Spain. One of the most popular became known as Las Posadas meaning the Inns or the Shelters. Today, thousands of parishes throughout Mexico continue this tradition and celebrate the Posada during Advent. Each year, millions of Mexican children together with their parents retrace the steps of Mary and Joseph in search of a room at the inn. In many parishes the Posada is celebrated with hymns, a rosary, piñatas and a meal. Several years ago, as part of our effort to reach out to Hispanic communities, we began promoting Posada celebrations through our councils. The program became so popular that last year we adapted it for use by all parishes and published a booklet titled Journey to The Inn: An Advent Celebration. Food for Families The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Order wide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. To encourage local Knights of Columbus councils to participate in this worthwhile program, the Supreme Council offers financial rebates to councils, assemblies or Squires circles that donate food or money. For councils or assemblies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per council/assembly per fraternal year. Circles will receive a refund from the Supreme Council of $20 for every $100 donated, or every 200 pounds of food that is contributed - up to a maximum refund of $100 per circle per fraternal year. Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations should be cumulative for the fraternal year and there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made. However, to be eligible for the rebate, the cumulative total of contributions of food/money needs to reach a minimum of $500 or 1,000 pounds of food for councils or assemblies, and a minimum of $100 or 200 pounds of food for circles. In addition, the Supreme Council recognizes that participating in this program can be time consuming for the local council. Should a council choose to participate in this program, this will fulfill all four of the Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award. In order to qualify as fulfilling all four requirements, the council must collect and donate a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and council members must contribute a minimum of 100 man-hours in the program. 52

54 RSVP Refund Support Vocations Program Thank you to all the councils, assemblies, the State Council and the Foundation for your prayers and generous donations to RSVP this past year and in the year to come. Between the Bismarck and Fargo Diocese we are blessed to have more than 40 men in formation for the priesthood and several women entering the religious life in North Dakota. These men and women need our support to help further their vocations. First and most importantly these men and women need our prayers. They, along with several men who have opted to take some time to discern their vocations, need our prayers as they discern God s plan for them. In addition to our prayers they need our financial assistance. These men have many expenses that go beyond just tuition & books. I ask that you consider financially supporting one or more of the seminarians or women entering religious life in North Dakota through RSVP. I would ask, too, that you consider making RSVP a standard item in your budget as we all reap the benefits from assisting these men and women in fulfilling their vocations. $500 is the minimum gift amount required to obtain a partial refund from Supreme. However, if you are not able to donate that much, a gift of any size is appreciated by our seminarians and should be reported to the state RSVP chairman. Updated lists of the seminarians will be made available on the State website as they are received from each diocese. If you need assistance in choosing recipients, please call Fr. Kurtis Gunwall of the Fargo Diocese ( ) or Fr. Josh Walz of the Bismarck Diocese ( ). You may also contact me with any questions at kkbrewing@gmail.com or When an RSVP has been made, a copy of form 2863 or a copy of the RSVP form included in the state program book should be sent to me. 58 Community Activities / Shamrocks Knights throughout North Dakota have been involved in Father Elwood E. Cassedy s dream of a home for troubled teens, a home that gives them a new chance at life and the reasons to make it successful. Each year dedicated Councils raise much needed funds to continue the good works at Home on the Range. Thank you, to those Councils that participate in this worthy cause each year and a special Thanks, to those that tried for the first time or returned to the effort last year. If your Council has not participated, please consider taking part this year and share in the feeling of doing something great with a little time and effort. Please inquire or order through the Community Chairman - Keith Holly using the following: keithhollygf10837@yahoo.com or home (701) or cell (701) This year may require a change, as we still don t have a group willing to produce the pipe cleaner style Shamrock pins, but an option of producing buttons will be pursued. Those Councils that still have the pipe cleaner pins on hand should either sell them or share them to make use of the investment that has been made in the past. New buttons or an alternative will be designed and produced for delivery well before St. Patrick s Day. We will try to have them available at State meetings, where you or a District Deputy may be able to pick them up for you or you may arrange to have them picked up at a different time if possible. State officers or officials have been able to deliver at times, but this is not always a convenient option, so please plan ahead to avoid expensive delivery options. Father Cassidy Award This award is given to each Council that achieves at least a $3.00 Per Capita donation. To get credit for this award, all funds must be turned in and recorded by April 1, Shamrock funds must be submitted to our Worthy State Treasurer, Mike Steiner at the address given at the bottom of this page. Special awards will be presented to Councils in each Division for Highest Per Capita Amounts and for the Highest Dollar Amounts. For questions, please contact: Community Activities Chairman Keith Holly 1606 S. 19th St. Grand Forks, ND Do Not Send Shamrock Funds Directly to Home on the Range Make checks payable to: North Dakota State Council Note Shamrocks in the Memo) Send checks to: Mike Steiner - State Treasurer PO Box 9076 Fargo, ND

59 Shamrock Talk Good (Morning/Evening) My name is, I am a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council # ) of this parish and I would like to tell you about our Shamrock program. This has been one of our ND State Council s worthy charities for over 40 years, with the proceeds going to the support of Home on the Range, in Sentinel Butte, ND. This is a home, started by Father Elwood E. Cassedy, for troubled teens that have been disadvantaged in life, some with stories of trouble, neglect, and abuse we can only imagine. These young men and women need another chance at life and the reasons to make it a success. The teachings and values of our Catholic religion are used as a binding element with the traditions many of us grew up with. Prayer, daily chapel service, education, a sense of personal responsibility, a renewed self-esteem, and everyday hard work involved in running a ranch are part of what makes it work. This being a working ranch, with these teens being the first priority, you can understand why they still need the financial help we can give. This help will make sure the experience continues to change lives and make a difference in our world. Yes, Home on the Range needs your prayers too, but your generous financial help is also needed to keep this dream alive and continue in its great success. Please make a donation and wear the Shamrock with Catholic pride. My brother Knights will be at the doors with Shamrocks if you wish to make a free will donation. On behalf of the teens at Home on the Range, I Thank You! 58

60 Community Activities / Tootsie Rolls The first oath of our fraternal order is CHARITY! The Tootsie Roll program is designed to help us live up to this promise. Father Michael J. McGivney s dream in founding the Knights of Columbus included assisting the disadvantaged. Through Special Olympics, his dream is realized, individuals with a desire to compete and excel in special skills will benefit while we, as Knights, support this worthy cause. If every Council in our state would try at least one case of Tootsie Rolls at their activities or events, generous patrons would have the chance to contribute in a Free Will offering to support those special individuals with their own dream of success and accomplishment. These individuals prove their own dedication and will, we can only try to match their enthusiasm. Please do what Knights do and contribute a little of your time and effort, so you too, can make a difference. We hope to encourage you and your Council to help grow this program and increase our support of the Special Olympics. Tootsie Rolls will be available throughout the year and can be distributed at state meetings, please order ahead and arrange for someone to pick them up. State officers and officials have often delivered the Tootsie Rolls, but planning is important. Tootsie Rolls must be ordered through a Council and will be billed at the current rate of $19.50 per case, but as always, price is subject to change by the vendor. Our hope is that each Tootsie Roll case will provide funds for the intended purpose, so please remember to be generous if you use them as treats or a Council giveaway. Tootsie Roll signs are available by request and can be printed and laminated by you to prolong their usable life. Councils will be recognized at the 2018 State Convention for their success in this program, but all payments and funds must be turned in and recorded by April 1, Tootsie Roll funds must be submitted to our Worthy State Treasurer, Mike Steiner at the address given at the bottom of this page. For questions or orders, please contact: Community Activities Chairman Keith Holly 1606 S. 19th St. Grand Forks, ND keithhollygf10837@yahoo.com Home (701) Cell (701) All payments and donations must be submitted to ND State Council Make checks payable to: North Dakota State Council Note Shamrocks in the Memo) Send checks to: Mike Steiner - State Treasurer PO Box 9076 Fargo, ND

61 Food for Families The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program Food for Families Reimbursement Program can best be explained as neighbors helping neighbors or families helping families. The program allows our councils to provide a helping hand to the less fortunate in our communities by donating money or food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. Let s do our best to help those that are in need but may not want to ask for help by participating in the program. The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program was established in Under this program, local Knights of Columbus councils or assemblies make an annual contribution of $500 or more, or 1,000 pounds of food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. For every $500 or 1,000 pounds of food contributed, the council or assembly is eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council. The maximum refund a council or assembly can receive is $500 per fraternal year. For Columbian Squires circles, the minimum donation is $100, or 100 pounds of food, with each circle eligible to receive from the Supreme Council a refund of $20 for each $100 donated or 100 pounds of food. Reimbursement must be applied for in the fraternal year during which contributions were made. As resources permit, councils, assemblies and circles may provide support to multiple food banks and/or food pantries. The minimum contribution to qualify for a refund is $500 ($100 for Squires circles) for each food bank/food pantry supported. In addition to a refund for financial contributions, councils, assemblies and circles are also eligible to receive a Food for Families plaque (and, in successive years, date plates signifying years of participation) in recognition of manpower support provided to food banks and food pantries. When you participate in this program, remember to fill out the report form that is due by June 30 th. The report form #10057 can be found on the Supreme Knights of Columbus website at kofc.org.
