4 State Deputy Message My Brothers in Christ, CHARITY IS LOVE What a great year, we the Knights of Columbus in North Dakota have had in recruiting new members into our midst. The Circle of Honor is within our grasp. North Dakota will stand as one of the elite jurisdictions of all the Knights of Columbus. Our membership teams have worked hard and are continuing to do so, to offer to each Catholic gentleman the opportunity to join us and to provide for their families through our insurance programs. Recruiting new members or bringing back those who have fallen by the wayside is not just about numbers, rather it is about growing our Order that we may continue to help those in need throughout our state, our country and throughout the world, while we continue to walk the path of Jesus. In order to have councils that are active we must have programs that are meaningful and excite and encourage our members to participate in them. Take part in your Council, State, and Supreme programs. The results of your participation will build your confidence in being a Knight of Columbus and will further our mission to Grow the Domestic Church as Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has asked of all Knights. Questions are a way of life. Feel free to ask any Officer of the Knights of Columbus in your councils or in the state council if you have questions or need assistance. We will answer! Let us all work together to strengthen our families, our church and our faith through the use of Charity as our guide. Love thy neighbor as you love thy self. Vivat Jesus Larry Lewandowski 3

5 Membership My Brother Knights of North Dakota, July 1st marks the beginning of the new fraternal year. We begin our journey to the Star Council Award. Let s not wait. We need to recruit new members now and keep the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney alive. Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of your council and the Order. Offering a man membership in the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life and his community. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond that Knights share while growing closer to his family and faith. As our Supreme Knight has mention in his discussions that we need to extend to every eligible Catholic man membership in the Knights of Columbus. To accomplish this, we are asking all brother Knights to reach out to other Catholic men and their families and invite them to become part of the North Dakota Knights of Columbus. We must also look at ways to bring Knight of Columbus to parishes where council is not present. Round Tables will give those parishes communities the support needed from men growing in faith and charity. Our efforts should be focused on Recruiting, Retention, New Council Development, and Council Retention. With these as our goals, we can surely keep the vision alive and ensure the continued growth of the Knights of Columbus. Thank you for your efforts in bringing new members into the Order. Working together, we are confident that the Knights of Columbus can be in every Catholic parish in North Dakota, whether a Council or Round Table. Best Regards, Membership Director KEVIN BOEHM 318 Cottonwood Street Grand Forks, ND kcboehm@gra.midco.net

6 10 Keyes to Success By Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson When the state deputies are in New Haven for their organizational meeting, I review with them my 10 Keys to Success. I believe that these keys are as important to grand knights and district deputies as they are to state deputies. I outline them here: Be Membership-Growth Oriented 365 Days a Year. Every activity your council undertakes should be geared to membership growth. Establish Long-Term Goals for Growth. Long term should be at least five years. Create Team-Oriented Council Officers. Work as a team toward a common goal, whether it be a service project or a recruitment target. Maintain a Positive Attitude and Communicate It. You must instill a positive attitude The best is yet to come This year can be better than last year, and next year will be even better than now. Focus on Youth and Youthful Leadership. Conduct programs that attract younger men and their families, such as our free-throw program and soccer challenge. Take Advantage of Leadership Training Programs. The Supreme Council and your state council want need you succeed. Attend grand knight training seminars, state meeting and functions. Establish Accountability. Be accountable to your fellow officers, your chaplain and to your members. Give them direction and let them know what you expect of them. Have and Communicate Clear Priorities. Repeat them often at meetings, in newsletters, via or in other regular correspondence with your officers and members. Be Open to Change. Constantly assess your performance and adjust your program to meet overall goals. 5

15 Sample pulpit talk for recruitment Good evening Father, ladies, brother Knights and families. My name is (Your name) from the Knights of Columbus: Someone asked me after learning that I was a member of the Knights of Columbus. What are the Knights and tell me everything that they do? The Knights of Columbus are unique in the Catholic Church. We owe this to the founder of our Order and his inspired vision, the servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney. For many years we have identified ourselves as a Catholic family, fraternal, service organization. We are each of those things independent of the other; for example, we are a Catholic organization or a service organization. It is the combination of both of these that makes us unique and gives us strength. First of all, our devotion to our faith makes us unique. Our roots are in our Catholic parish. Our founder was a priest. Our service programs are informed by our faith. Our willingness to give of ourselves for the church and community, for families in need, for brother knights and young people results annually in record amounts of charity and service. To truly be a Knight is to live the virtues of Columbianism. That is also part of Father McGivney s vision. We are always striving to be better Catholic men, better husbands, fathers, and sons, better citizens, better neighbors, better leaders What is unique for us is the spiritual dimension; what the Second Vatican Council referred to as the universal call to holiness. That is the spirit of the Order. I come to you today to inform you of some of possibilities here at (Your Parish) but only with your help. We need more families to join our family, the Knights of Columbus, to better serve the needs of the priest and parish. Knights of Columbus in their local churches serve as; ushers, greeters, ministers, cooks, janitors, baby sitters, painters, and last year the North Dakota Knights of Columbus donated in excess of $50,000 to seminarians and religious for their studies, you name it the Knights are probably doing it. You have an active Knights of Columbus council here in but we need you and your family. We can offer you a fraternal group that works and plays together while promoting our Catholic faith. The opportunity to help your pastor in caring for your church and community, to help our youth in programs available such as essay contests, coloring contest, scholarships, sporting events, and programs for the parish. Knights also support the RSVP vocations program, Pennies for Vocations, and Handicap funding. You might say we are we already doing most of the programs, yes hopefully you are. The Knights offer leadership and organization to the pastor and church, along with other benefits. The list of things we have to offer is endless and I know you would get tired of listening to me. Please stop after Mass and visit with members of the Knights. Better yet, come and join us. We want and need all of you. The peace of Jesus Christ be with you and the blessings or Our Lady of Fatima grant you ever lasting life. Thank you for your time. 14

There are two very important items. Give a gift of a lifetime, only available to all Knights of Columbus Members. What will you lose? Why do you want to lose it? We can Fix it? What better gift could you leave your family than a Daily Mass for the repose of the soul of their mother and father? 28 Roundtable A Knights of Columbus Presence in Every Parish. Living in service to all is one of the most dynamic qualities of being a Knight. A unique way for Knights to serve is by helping out in local parishes, especially in those churches that do not have a Knights of Columbus presence and are not large enough to have their own council. The Order requests council members to extend services to such parishes. This can be accomplished by establishing a Parish Round Table in which current member Knights help local parishes. The parish priest will identify the services he requires. The Parish Round Table Coordinator will then work with members of the Parish Round Table and the council to fulfill his wishes. A Round Table Booklet #2632 is available from the Supreme office for proper set up of a Round Table. A Coordinator is needed. He reports to the local council once a month. There are no elected offices There are no regular meetings Benefits of a Round Table: The Pastor sets the programs Pastor involvement is as he wishes Obtaining membership goals are made easier You are helping your Parish Community You are helping your Parish Priest in his efforts Roundtable Chairman LEON STECKLER th Ave S Fargo, ND leon.steckler@yahoo.com 27

29 Ceremonials There are four different ceremonials in the order of the Knights of Columbus, one for each degree of the Order. Yes, all four of the ceremonials are secretive. This is the only thing that is to be known to only Knights of Columbus members, everything else we do is open to the public. Our FIRST degree pertains to CHARITY and is the ADMISSIONS; The Grand Knight of the council is responsible for the 1 st degree initiations. They can be done by a team or by the DVD that Supreme has supplied. There should be at least one first degree per month per district. Each District Deputy is responsible to have this set up and reported to the State Deputy. This is the first step into Knighthood. Encourage the members to continue on. Our SECOND degree pertains to UNITY and is the FORMATION; District Deputies are responsible for the 2 nd degree initiations. This is coordinated between the ceremonials chairman, District Deputies, State Deputy and the Captain of the 2 nd degree team. This can be done as a stand-alone but is usually held in conjunction with the 3 rd degree. Our THIRD degree pertains to FRATERNITY and is the KNIGHTHOOD; The State Deputy is responsible for the 3 rd degree initiations. All 3 rd degree exemplifications are to be done by a conferring officer that is appointed by the State Deputy. All these degrees are approved by the Supreme office as of the place and date. The only person to cancel this degree is the State Deputy, that being said; it takes communication between the District Deputy and the State Deputy weeks prior to this event. Our FOURTH degree pertains to PATRIOTISM; The District Master of the State is responsible for setting up this degree after approval of date and place by the Supreme office. District Master and Faithful Navigator are responsible for putting the team together and doing the exemplification. This is held as a stand-alone exemplification. 30 Insurance Following are some examples of support that we can offer the State Office, as well as our Local Councils. SUPPORT Since there are a number of newly elected officers statewide, the Agency would like to remind everyone of the support that the Agency Field Force can offer you. We would like to work closely with all the State Officers and Grand Knights when it comes to Insurance Promotion and also assist when possible with Membership Recruitment. DEVELOP A PLAN The Grand Knight should feel free to call the General Agent or Field Agent to develop a plan involving promotions for both council meeting attendance and the Order s insurance program. TEAMWORK Throughout the Order, our Fraternal and Insurance aspects must be blended into a smooth working team. Such is the task of the Grand Knights and the Insurance Promotion and Membership Chairman. General Agents and Field Agents are an integral part of the council s membership and retention campaigns. Their expertise regarding the Fraternal Benefits of the Order and their knowledge of the members of their councils is invaluable. Use these professional assets to your advantage. COMMUNICATION Communication is the key to everyone s success, so feel free to contact General Agent Pat Dolan, or any of the Field Agents with any concerns or questions you may have. 34 State Program Director s Report As we began the new fraternal year of the North Dakota Knights of Columbus Programs. The expectations have been raised by the Supreme Council and set forth by our State Council. This means that as members of the State Council team, our expectations have been raised. As we move forward, I am going to rely heavily on the District Deputies to raise the bar at the council level. The District Deputy will then expect every Grand Knight and Council Program Chairman to perform their duties to insure a successful North Dakota State Program. State Deputy, Larry Lewandowski, and I have set goals that we would like to see every council accomplish during the Columbian year. We would like to see each and every council achieve the State Deputies Award for Excellence. We need a better showing than we did in , and we can. Councils can achieve this award by achieving a certain number of points via the monthly reporting forms and turning in there other forms on time. The specifics of the award are covered in detail later in this handbook. We would like to see each and every council submit a Monthly Reporting Form every month to myself, your State Program Chairman. A copy of this form should also be submitted to the District Deputy so they can record that the job is being completed. The monthly reporting forms can be completed and mailed or submitted via the North Dakota Knights of Columbus website. These forms are due by the 10 th day of the following month. We would like to see each and every council participate in the Supreme Service Awards Program. We know that all of your councils have been doing many outstanding service projects in the past years, but you never take credit for them. We need to do better and we all do. Please let us help recognize your council and its members by submitting the Supreme Service Award at the end of the Columbian year. If your entry wins at the state level, it will then go on to the Supreme level to be judged by the Supreme Council. Winning at the state level is an honor for your council members. The 6 categories are: Church, Council, Community, Family, Youth, and Culture of Life. We would like to see each and every council participate in the Knight of the Month Program and the Family of the Month Program. This is a very good way to increase participation and visibility of the Knights of Columbus in your parish. Each Family of the Month nomination can be submitted to the Supreme Council for monthly recognition from each state. We would then like to see your councils nominate one of our monthly selections as your councils Knight of the Year and Family of the year at the State Council level. As members of the North Dakota Knights of Columbus team, let us all strive to get the State and all of our councils the recognition they deserve for the hard work we do. 44 Church Activities As the largest Catholic fraternity of men, we have the opportunity to make a significant contribution of living the precepts of our faith for our families. As Knights of Columbus, we should see our membership in the Order as our opportunity to grow closer to Christ. We do this by our good works within the Order, but also through prayer. Brother Knights, the core of Church Activities in our North Dakota Knights of Columbus is devoted to praying together. Personally, I have experienced very powerful results of praying for a Brother Knight or a member of his family who are in need. As this fraternal year unfolds, be sure your council places one of its highest priorities on Brotherhood and prayer. Carry the rosary which is emblematic of your exemplification into the Knights of Columbus. Pray the rosary regularly. Pray the rosary alone, with your spouse and family, or at your council meetings. We do this in our actions, and by the work of our councils. We do this so that we may make a positive impact on this world, in accordance with His Holy Will. We are pleased North Dakota is now a participant in the travelling Silver Rose of Our Lady of Guadalupe project. In North Dakota, our Knights of Columbus are currently engaged in a very special prayer project. A Pontifical Icon depicting the Holy Family will be traveling from council to council throughout the state. In the presence of the Holy Family Icon, we gather to pray the rosary and to recite a special prayerful litany meant to secure the Blessings of the Holy Family in our lives. The Holy Family Icon will move from parish to parish. It will follow a schedule intended to shower the Icon every week with our prayers and devotion. Another way we can deepen our Catholic faith is through spiritual bouquets. This where members of the council each commit to praying for a particular intention. For example; 10 rosaries, 5 masses, 5 Divine Mercy Chaplets for the particular intention. Let us also continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. As the Right Hand of the Church our aspiring priests need our prayers. Brother Knights gathering to pray should keep our aspiring, active and retired priests among our prayerful intentions. May God continue to bless them. Vivat Jesu! Church Activities Chairman KENT BRICK 201 8th Ave NW Mandan, ND kent.brick@gmail.com 43

51 RSVP Refund Support Vocations Program Thank you to all the councils, assemblies, the State Council and the Foundation for your prayers and generous donations to RSVP this past year and in the year to come. Between the Bismarck and Fargo Diocese we are blessed to have more than 40 men in formation for the priesthood and several women entering the religious life in North Dakota. These men and women need our support to help further their vocations. First and most importantly these men and women need our prayers. They, along with several men who have opted to take some time to discern their vocations, need our prayers as they discern God s plan for them. In addition to our prayers they need our financial assistance. These men have many expenses that go beyond just tuition & books. I ask that you consider financially supporting one or more of the seminarians or women entering religious life in North Dakota through RSVP. I would ask, too, that you consider making RSVP a standard item in your budget as we all reap the benefits from assisting these men and women in fulfilling their vocations. As soon as I have received the names of all of the new applicants, an updated list will be made available on the State website. If you need assistance in choosing recipients, please call Fr. Kurtis Gunwall of the Fargo Diocese ( ) or Fr. Josh Walz of the Bismarck Diocese ( ). You may also contact me with any questions at kkbrewing@gmail.com or When an RSVP has been made, a copy of form 2863 should be sent to me. Many of the boys and girls that come to Home on the Range have been addicted to drugs and alcohol, or have come from broken homes. Some of these children have been victims of abuse that is too sorrowful to mention. The Catholic spiritual element is important to the success of the programs at Home on the Range. The Catholic tradition of prayer before meals, the importance of God in their lives, and chapel service are all part of what boys and girls learn at Home on the Range. Home on the Range started as a working ranch and it remains a real ranch today. The residents do the chores, tend to the livestock, clean their bedrooms and dorms, take care of the lawn and garden, shovel snow, and of course repair the fencing. The work teaches the children a sense of responsibility and pride of ownership. Home on the Range needs your prayers and financial support. Please help us keep the dream of Home on the Range alive, please make a donation and wear your shamrock with Catholic pride. My Brother Knights will be at the doors with the shamrocks if you wish to make a free will donation. Thank you! 55

57 Tootsie Rolls The first oath of our Fraternal Order is CHARITY! The Tootsie Roll program is designed to help us live up to that promise. Assisting people with intellectual disabilities was a dream of our founder Father Michael J McGivney. Each North Dakota Knights of Columbus council should arrange to order boxes of Tootsie Rolls and distribute them in exchange for a donation. This can be done at most of your council activities. The State Council runs the program by ordering and distributing the Tootsie Rolls. By doing this we are able to donate the proceeds to the Special Olympics. Please encourage your councils to help this program continue to grow. Remember, the Knights of Columbus is all about charity. Please use this program to help increase the charitable works of your councils. Each council will be billed by the State Council for the cost of the Tootsie Rolls. The state will distribute the donations to the Special Olympics. Community Activities Chairman KEITH L. HOLLY 1606 s 19th St. cell Grand Forks, ND home keithhollygk10837@yahoo.com Make all checks payable to North Dakota State Council Send all checks to: State Treasurer Mike Steiner PO Box 9076 Fargo, ND

58 Food for Families The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program Food for Families Reimbursement Program can best be explained as neighbors helping neighbors or families helping families. The program allows our councils to provide a helping hand to the less fortunate in our communities by donating money or food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. Let s do our best to help those that are in need but may not want to ask for help by participating in the program. The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program was established in Under this program, local Knights of Columbus councils or assemblies make an annual contribution of $500 or more, or 1,000 pounds of food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. For every $500 or 1,000 pounds of food contributed, the council or assembly is eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council. The maximum refund a council or assembly can receive is $500 per fraternal year. For Columbian Squires circles, the minimum donation is $100, or 100 pounds of food, with each circle eligible to receive from the Supreme Council a refund of $20 for each $100 donated or 100 pounds of food. Reimbursement must be applied for in the fraternal year during which contributions were made. As resources permit, councils, assemblies and circles may provide support to multiple food banks and/or food pantries. The minimum contribution to qualify for a refund is $500 ($100 for Squires circles) for each food bank/food pantry supported. In addition to a refund for financial contributions, councils, assemblies and circles are also eligible to receive a Food for Families plaque (and, in successive years, date plates signifying years of participation) in recognition of manpower support provided to food banks and food pantries. When you participate in this program, remember to fill out the report form that is due by June 30 th. The report form #10057 can be found on the Supreme Knights of Columbus website at kofc.org.
