4 From The East, Brethren, At this coming Stated Meeting I will announce that we will have a Special Election for Worshipful Master at our March Stated Meeting. Since the Installation will immediately follow the Election it will be necessary for the Worshipful Master -Elect to have a current Master s proficiency card with him. Becoming proficient to become Master is no easy task, being proficient at being Master is even tougher. I would like to take this time to thank those who make the job of being Worshipful Master of Sun City Lodge #72 a little bit easier. The Lodge trustees who keep a watchful care over the needs of the building, along with the Building Manager take a great load off my shoulders. The Trust trustees who make sure that we have the necessary funds to support our wonderful building relieve me of anxiety. Our Treasurer who keeps track of all the expenses and puts everything in the right category and keeps me apprised of our financial situation. Our Secretary, who works endlessly to keep all the reports and forms filed with Grand Lodge and still takes the time to keep me on track with everything I need to do. The Past Masters who offer their expertise, knowledge and assistance. It takes all of these people to successfully run this Lodge and I thank all of them for the many hours they put into their respective duties. Craig Montgomery Worshipful Master

5 From The West, Brethren, The other day I was talking to a brother Mason who had recently been raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. I asked him about his thoughts and feelings on the Third Degree. After a brief discussion with him I started to reflect about my thoughts when I was raised. The work Integrity is what came to my mind when I reflected on my experience. That for a man nothing is more important than his own personal integrity. I grew up in a very religious family and my Dad for most of my childhood was in the Church clergy. I remember my Dad had a favorite scripture that he would love to share and would be somewhat of a hallmark of this ministry. The scripture is from the book of Job 27:3 and it reads: "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live. As Masons we must keep our integrity no matter what. It is the integrity of Hyrum Abif and what he stood for that made him a great man. For me this is what I learned when becoming a Master Mason. To hold fast to my integrity, not just in Freemasonry, but in all trials and aspects of life. I hope this message finds you all well and look forward to the continuance of fellowship and brotherhood this year. Most respectfully,

6 , From The south Greetings Brethren, Welcome to the month of Love. As Valentine's Day approaches remember those that have and continue to capture your Heart with Love. In the Lodge we are taught the precious virtue of Brotherly Love. With our teachings we are constantly encouraging and supporting brethren as they pursue their craft. Whether it is within the body of the lodge or by the wayside, Brotherly Love should always be one of our primary tenants. Our regular pursuit of Perfection, whether it be in our ritualistic ambitions or our regular vocations, it is almost always met with Divine interruptions of our Creator. Recalling one my numerous visits to the incredible Masonic Temple in Philadelphia it was explained and demonstrated that Man cannot achieve constant perfection in his daily life. As ornate and spectacular as each of the 7 Lodge rooms may be, each room had one imperfection that is not directly visible to the keen eye, but it existed. This was done purposely to teach us that only our Supreme Being can achieve perfection. Brotherly Love is instrumental to support our Fraternity and especially its members as each of us pursues either; movement toward the East; Ritualistic preparation; or success in our families and careers. Combining all these pursuits helps us to enlighten ourselves on the capabilities of the talents and ambition the Great Creator has imbued each person with while limiting our ability to achieve true perfection. With the support of our Brethren we can demonstrate that Unselfish Love we are encouraged to express regardless of any shortcomings and errors. We should always remember that we must learn to atone from our mistakes and take the next step to help Raise a fallen brother. Only through Brotherly Love can we aid and assist each Brother to enable him to realize his goals and ambitions within the Lodge or outside its doors. Lastly, as Valentines' Day nears, remember to treat your loved ones with the same tenants that Brotherly Love teaches us as Master Masons. Fraternally and sincerely, Kevin D. Baver, PM Stated Meeting Dinner Menu MENU: Hamburger and Macaroni, Garlic Bread, Cole Slaw and Dessert The cost for dinner is $8.00 Reservations would be appreciated at least 3 days in advance. RSVP to: Kevin Baver kdbaver@hotmail.com or call the lodge at

7 Greetings Brethren, not a lot to report that hasn t already been done by the secretary. I m still studying to memorize my lecture to get my proficiency, thank you all for your patience, especially our Worshipful Master Craig Montgomery, whose is still hanging in there for me to get finished. I really liked this story, I hope you will too. The tale is told of a historian recording folk history in Illinois in the 1970s. Several people in the countryside had told him of a family, which had the ax Abraham Lincoln used when splitting logs for a living as a young man. The historian finally located the farm, and found the farmer in the yard splitting wood for a living room fireplace. He asked him about the story. Yes said the farmer, it s true. Abe Lincoln lived around here as a young man and he worked for a while splitting wood for my great, great grandfather. Happened he d bought a new ax from a peddler the day before Abe Lincoln came to work here, and he gave it to Lincoln to use. We ve kept it ever since. That s a real historic treasure, said the historian. It really ought to be in a museum, would you mind going in the house and bringing it out so I can see it? Oh, we know it s important, said the farmer. I take it to the school from time to time and tell the kids about it and Lincoln, seems to sorta make him real for them. But I don t have to go into the house, I ve got it right here. He handed the horrified historian the ax he had been using. You mean you re still using it? Sure thing an ax is meant to be used. The historian looked it over carefully, I must say, your family has certainly taken good care of it. Sure, we know were protecting history. Why, we ve replaced the handle twice and the head once. In many ways Masonry is like Abe Lincoln s ax, all of us tend to assume that Masonry has always been the way it was when we joined. We have become fiercely protective of it in that form. In fact, we ve done more than replace the handle twice and the head once. For example, when Brothers George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Paul Revere joined the fraternity, they did not demonstrate proficiency by memorizing categorical lectures. Instead the same evening they received a degree they sat around a table with other brethren of the lodge and asked each other questions and answered them for the instruction of the new Brother. They asked him questions and helped him with the answers. The instruction continued until they were confident he understood the lessons of the degree. They then taught him the signs and tokens, and he was proficient. In many cases he took the next degree the next night. The custom of allowing 28 days to pass between degrees came about for no other reason than the fact that most lodges met every 28 days, on the nights of the full moon. There was no mystery behind that, very few horses came equipped with headlights, and only on nights of a full moon could people see well enough to leave their homes in the country and come into town for a meeting safely. As to other changes, for instance, the names of the three ruffians have changed at least three times since the Master Mason Degree was created around And masonry is like Abe Lincolns ax in another way. For although the handle and head had been replaced, the ax was still used by Abe Lincoln in truth if not in fact. The farmer used the ax to teach. He told children about it and about Abe Lincoln. He helped make the past real to them so they could learn the great values of honesty and hard work, which Lincoln typified so well. It s the same with masonry in spite of many changes which have already happened and the changes which are bound to happen in the future (Masonry, like any living thing, must change and grow, or die) it is still the same. Its essence, the lessons it teaches, the difference it makes in the lives of men, that great moment of transformation which is the goal of Masonry, when a man becomes something new and better than he was when he came in the door as a candidate, the essence cannot and will not be lost, as long as brothers are meeting in the true masonic spirit; to work and learn and study and improve themselves and the world. That s Masonry, and like Abe Lincolns ax, it was meant to be used, not to rust away in a museum case. That use keeps it bright and sharp and Masonic, no matter how often the handle and head need to be replaced. I hope to see you all in lodge Sincerely and fraternally Bob Cole
