James Buchanan was initiated: December 1l, 1816, Lodge No. 43, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Brother Buchanan became Worshipful Master of Lodge N ; and in 1824 was appointed District Deputy Grand Master for the Counties of Lancaster, Lebanon and York. Tall, stately, James Buchanan was the only President who never married. Presiding over a rapidly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time. Relying on constitutional doctrines to close the widening rift over slavery, he failed to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments which favored the South. Nor could he realize how sectionalism had realigned political parties: the Democrats split; the Whigs were destroyed, giving rise to the Republicans. He was elected five times to the House of Representatives; then, after an interlude as Minister to Russia, served for a decade in the Senate. He became Polk's Secretary of State and Pierce's Minister to Great Britain. Service abroad helped to bring him the Democratic nomination in 1856 because it had exempted him from involvement in bitter domestic controversies. As President-elect, Buchanan thought the crisis would disappear if he maintained a sectional balance in his appointments and could persuade the people to accept constitutional law as the Supreme Court interpreted it. The Court was considering the legality of restricting slavery in the territories, and two justices hinted to Buchanan what the decision would be. Thus, in his Inaugural the President referred to the territorial question as "happily, a matter of but little practical importance" since the Supreme Court was about to settle it "speedily and finally." Two days later Chief Justice Roger B. Taney delivered the Dred Scott decision, asserting that Congress had no constitutional power to deprive persons of their property rights in slaves in the territories. Southerners were delighted, but the decision created a furor in the North. Buchanan decided to end the troubles in Kansas by urging the admission of the territory as a slave state. Although he directed his Presidential authority to this goal, he further angered the Republicans and alienated members of his own party. Kansas remained a territory. When Republicans won a plurality in the House in 1858, every significant bill they passed fell before southern votes in the Senate or a Presidential veto. The Federal Government reached a stalemate. Sectional strife rose to such a pitch in 1860 that the Democratic Party split into northern and southern wings, each nominating its own candidate for the Presidency. Consequently, when the Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln, it was a foregone conclusion that he would be elected even though his name appeared on no southern ballot. Rather than accept a Republican administration, the southern "fire-eaters" advocated secession. President Buchanan, dismayed and hesitant, denied the legal right of states to secede but held that the Federal Government legally could not prevent them. He hoped for compromise, but secessionist leaders did not want compromise. Then Buchanan took a more militant tack. As several Cabinet members resigned, he appointed northerners, and sent the Star of the West to carry reinforcements to Fort Sumter. On January 9, 1861, the vessel was far away. Buchanan reverted to a policy of inactivity that continued until he left office. In March 1861 he retired to his Pennsylvania home Wheatland--where he died seven years later--leaving his successor to resolve the frightful issue facing the Nation.

Character and wisdom are sculpted over time They come with loss, lessons, and triumphs. They come after doubts, second guesses, and exploring unknowns. If there were a definitive path to happiness and success, everyone would be on it. The seeds of your progress are planted in your past failures. Your best stories will come from overcoming your greatest struggles. Your praises will be birthed from your pains. So keep standing, keep learning, and keep living. So my challenge to you today is this: Start looking at life s harsh realities and toughest challenges as friends that are going to help you grow. Here are some thoughts to consider: 1. The first step is never easy. The beginnings to good things are always the hardest, but it s these hard times that pave the path to greatness. Be strong and keep the faith. It will be worth it in the end. The greatest miracle of your success in life will not be that you finished, it will be that you found the strength and courage to begin. And remember, it s not that those who are strong never get weak in the knees, or that they never hold their breath before they embark. t s that while their knees are shaking, they force themselves to breathe and take the first step. 2. You will always have less control than you desire. The only thing you can absolutely control in life is how you react to things out of your control, and there s a lot you can t control. The better you adapt to this reality, the more powerful your highs will be, and the more quickly you ll be able to bounce back from the lows. Put most simply: Living a happy, fulfilling life means being in a state of complete acceptance of all that is, right here, right now. As your life unfolds, you will often realize that many of the times you thought you were being rejected from something good, you were in fact being redirected to something better. You don t have to control everything to find peace and happiness. You just need to do your best, and then relax and have faith that things will work out. Let go and just let life happen the way it s supposed to. Because sometimes the outcomes you can t change end up changing you and helping you grow to your full potential. 3. You cannot avoid risk without avoiding life. As Henry David Thoreau once said, When it s time to die, let us not discover that we have never lived. Living is a risk. Happiness is a risk. If you re not a little scared sometimes, then you re not doing it right. Don t worry about mistakes and failures, worry about what you re giving up when you don t even try. Worry about the life you re not living and the happiness you re forgoing, as you merely exist in the safety of your comfort zone. Give yourself permission to be one of the people who survived doing it wrong, who made mistakes, but recovered from them and grew into your truest self. 4. Your biggest problems are often in your head. The primary cause of unhappiness and defeat is never the current situation but your thoughts about it. Happiness and success really comes down to two elements: the way you think and the way you act based upon your thoughts. Human beings become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do great things, right now, without the need for anything more. When you believe in yourself, you have realized the first secret of success. Often finding your way is not about going somewhere new; it s about seeing familiar ground in new ways. Once you do, you will realize the only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is how you use them. 5. Not everyone will support you. If you take every insult or rude slur of your fellow human beings personally, you will be offended for the rest of your life. One of the most freeing things we learn in life is that we don t have to agree with everyone, everyone doesn t have to agree with us, and that s OK. As Bruce Lee once said, I m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you re not in this world to live up to mine. Live by this quote. Don t let the opinions of others make you forget it. It takes a long time to learn how to NOT judge yourself through someone else s eyes, but once you do the world is yours for the taking. We have all been placed on this earth to discover our own life, and we will never be happy or successful if we try to live someone else s idea of it. So give up worrying too much about what others think of you. Regardless of what they say about you and your chosen path, remember that the only approval you need in the end is your own.

Brethren welcome to this month s installment of on the level, the Senior Warden Jewell. I found a wonderful and enlightening description of leadership. I m not sure who wrote this, but it was presented by Harvey Mackay, A bestselling author and leadership consultant. He spells out leadership using the letters and provides a brief description for each letter. To me, all of these descriptions are very applicable to our work in masonry, whether or not you are a leader in the fraternity. Therefore I added a few comments of my own. L is for loyalty. A leader must be loyal to the organization, and leave no question that he or she is committed to its success. A leader models loyalty so that it works top-down, bottom-up, and side-to-side at all times. E is for enthusiasm. Leaders know that enthusiasm is contagious, and they help spread it around. If you are excited about doing what you do every day, it will show. And that generates enthusiasm among other members of the fraternity and other people who see us. A is for adversity. Truly effective leaders accept adversity as a condition of doing business. I have never met a successful person who hasn t had to overcome some type of adversity. Don t be afraid of adversity. Handled properly, it makes you stronger. It helps you grow. D is for determination. Determined people, particularly determined leaders, possess the stamina and courage to pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule or unfavorable circumstances. In fact, discouragement usually spurs them on to greater things. When they get discouraged, they recognize that in order to get different results, some change is required. Determined people also exhibit another D traits discipline. E is for example. We lead by example, whether in business, family or friendships. Set high personal standards and expect the same from your friends and brothers. R is for resilience. Successful people are resilient. They don t let hard times turn into end times. S is for sincerity. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Go team go! Only works if you are sincerely committed to what you are doing. H is for heart. A good decision must factor in the human elements. When your head and heart say the same thing, you can bet it s the right answer. I is for integrity. Integrity begins at the top. We must clearly define what is expected throughout the organization, ensuring that integrity is first and foremost in our decision-making. P is for purpose. Leaders think in terms of goals. There isn t a college football coach with a greater sense of purpose then Lou Holtz. He proved it at Notre Dame, Arkansas, the University of Minnesota and a host of other universities. Did you know that Lou once coach the New York Jets? He left the job after only eight months. Why? Because as Lou stated, he came to the job without a clear sense of purpose. Absent a focus of my own I couldn t give one to the team. I was embarrassed by my inability to provide them with proper leadership. So I left. It takes a great leader to be that honest.

The Masonic Blazing star is not only a Masonic symbol, but an ancient and historic one. From early days, Man has always looked to the heavens for guidance. The Sun God: The sun is also a star. We find that early man worshipped the Sun as a god. In Egypt, we find that stars were also chosen as symbols of earthly heroes who once lived on earth and whose spirits were immortalized in the form of a tangible object. The Dog Star: Egyptian idols and gravestone contain representations of Sirius, the Dog Star. The Dog Star is actually 2 stars called Sirius A and Sirius B Due to the fact that the Dog Star is 8.6 light years away, without a telescope of the magnitudinal category of the Hubble Telescope, using the naked eye, we see it as one star. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky because it is approximately twice the size of our sun. Seafaring Travelers: used the stars as a guide, much as we use a map, today. Astronomy and Astrology: The ancients believed that the stars in the sky were connected to earthly events. Miracles were routinely associated with the birth of important people. Hence, the study of astronomy and astrology were conceived. While many people scoff at these beliefs, today; we must also be cognizant of the deeply held belief in this system. Halley's Comet: For those people who reject this theory completely, we must not forget that famous Freemason, Mark Twain, American author and humorist, who was born in 1835, two weeks after the closest approach to Earth of Halley's Comet. In 1909, he is quoted as having said: "I came in with Halley's Comet in It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it." His comment was prophetic. He died in April of 1910, (age 75) one day after the comet's closest approach to Earth. From ancient civilizations to modern man, our Masonic Blazing Star is a symbol of Divine Providence...the symbol of Deity which represents: Omnipresence (the fact that the Creator is always present in our lives) Omniscience (the fact that the Creator both sees and knows everything about us, including our thoughts and the secrets of our hearts) And throughout history, the Masonic Blazing Star is an ancient emblem of faith which shines for each of us, no matter which specific religion we embrace. Throw away all ambition beyond that of doing the days work well. The traveler on the road to success live in the present, heedless of taking thought for the marrow. Live neither in the past nor the future, but let each day's work absorb your entire energies, and satisfy your widest ambition. ~ Brother William Osler The truth is like a balloon and a lie is like a pin, once you pierce the balloon with the pin the balloon, like the truth, becomes worthless. ~ Unknown Freemasonry is "veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols" because these are the surest way by which moral and ethical truths may be taught. It is not only with the brain and with the mind that the initiate must take Freemasonry but also with the heart. Brother ~ C. H. Claudy

These awards are presented annually to Brother Masons who epitomizes the highest standard of leadership, fellowship, service to the Craft, and brotherly love. The men receiving these awards have demonstrated a willingness to serve, not only their individual Lodge, but Masonry in general through ones conduct and actions during the preceding year. Brothers Larry Gorelick received The Beehive Award, Jim Leber the Silver Trowel Award and Past Master Dave Mason of the Year Award. Their dedication and service to our Lodge, and the fraternity in general, should stand as an example of conduct to be emulated by their Lodge Brothers, and with the General Masonic Community at large as well. These men stand out among their peers at almost every level in life, and thus are truly deserving of these accolades which we have chosen to bestow upon them. As a Lodge of Masonry, through these awards, we honor these recipients as valued members of our Lodge as an intricate and integral part of its continued successes in the future. It goes without saying that these Awards are outstanding, but the Mason of the Year award is, without a doubt, one of the highest honors any Mason, in any Lodge, can ever receive. Congratulations Brothers and Past Master David Miller. This is my opinion, after knowing P.M. David Miller for a few years now and without any doubt he is the Mason s Mason. On a personal note Brother David was responsible after years of my Masonic inactivity to bring me back into Masonry. Thanks W.M. David. ~ Bro. George Mitchell

The bold and elaborate elevations of Norman architecture at Broad and Filbert Streets, especially the beautiful Norman portico of Quincy granite, make it one of the great architectural wonders of the City of Philadelphia.
